How to Beat Kalista
Kalista never stops moving, which sounds like a defensive trait and is actually how she kills people.
She moves by attacking, so the usual trade between doing damage and repositioning doesn't exist for her. An early duel against her goes badly for that reason: she's moving in, backing off and dealing damage in the same motion while the other marksman is choosing between two of those. What she doesn't have is a late game to match it. The hops are short and predictable, and they stop entirely the moment something locks her in place. So the matchup is a race, and your job is to know which half of it they're in.
- Hard crowd control, because the hop is her only defense
- The patience to reach the late game
- A support who starts fights rather than reacts to them

Kalista Overview
Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous
- She kites better than anyone. Attacking and moving are the same action, so there's no window where she's committed and stationary the way every other marksman is.
- The early duel is close to unwinnable. Given a support who can hold somebody still for even a moment, she wins the lane hard enough to end it before items are a factor.
- Rend [E] clears and executes at once. It takes waves, it takes objectives and it finishes people who thought they'd escaped, and the reset means a good fight snowballs into a better one.
- Her ultimate is an engage tool. She can throw her support into a fight from range, and that turns a lane pair into something that can start a fight neither of them should be able to reach.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- The late game isn't hers. She scales worse than almost every marksman she'll be standing across from, so a game that reaches items has stopped being about her.
- Crowd control turns her off completely. The hop is her only defensive tool. Anything that stops her attacking stops her moving, and she has nothing else to fall back on.
- The hops are short and readable. Each hop is small, and there are just a lot of them. A skillshot aimed where she's going rather than where she is connects far more often than people expect.
- She's entirely dependent on her support. Her strongest tools require somebody to lock a target down and somebody to be thrown. Take that person out of the lane and she's a weak marksman with a spear.
- She has to keep attacking to matter. Any moment she spends not attacking is a moment she's doing nothing at all (a much harsher constraint than it sounds).
Countering Kalista
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Kalista comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Bring crowd control and skip the poke. Poke wars are the fight she was hoping for. One root and she's a stationary marksman with no health.
- Survive the first fifteen minutes. It's a plan, and it isn't a defeatist one. She has a window, the window closes, and most of her games are decided by whether it closed early enough.
- Aim where she's going. The movement is predictable in a way genuine dashes aren't, and adjusting for it turns a matchup that feels impossible to hit into an ordinary one.
- Kill her support instead of her. The engage, the lock down and the ultimate all run through somebody else, and that somebody is usually much easier to reach.
If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Kalista Matchup
Give up the early wave and take the safe farm. Granted, it's a miserable ten minutes, and it's the correct ten minutes, because every advantage she takes in it is one she has to convert quickly or lose.
Ask for the objective trades rather than the fights. Her lane wins fights and her team is worse at converting a map, so a game played around towers and dragons is a game she has less to say about.
Buy the armor component before the damage one. It looks slow, and it's the purchase that makes the lane survivable (the only thing that matters until it isn't).
Best Kalista Counters
Catch her, root her, or simply outlast the window she's dangerous in.

Thresh Catches Her
A hook is faster than a hop, and once she's been pulled the constant motion she relies on is gone for exactly long enough.
The lantern is the quieter half. Her lane wants to win a two on two before anybody else arrives, and he's very good at making sure somebody else arrives.

Maokai Roots The Hop
A root is the single worst thing that can happen to her, because it stops everything she does (escaping included).
He also survives the lane she's trying to win. There's no burst here for her to punish, just a support who keeps being in the way.

Jinx Outlasts Her
She's weakest exactly where Kalista is strongest and strongest exactly where Kalista isn't, so the matchup comes down to clock management.
Once the game is long, the range advantage and the reset mean a single fight going her way ends it for good.
Itemizing Against Kalista
All four are aimed at a stream of basic attacks that never stops:

Bramble Vest is a better early buy against her than it looks, since the armor blunts the constant attacks and the healing reduction takes away the lifesteal that lets her stay in a trade she should have left. Plated Steelcaps is the other cheap answer (worth taking on the person she's actually hitting, rather than on whoever is tanking). Frozen Heart is the best of the later options (her damage scales with attack speed and her movement does too), so it slows both halves of her at once. Randuin's Omen suits whoever has to stand between her and the rest of your team, and the slow it carries matters more than usual against a champion who wins by never being reachable.
