How to Beat Ahri
Ahri never has to take a bad fight. She has one button that starts the fight and three dashes that end it, and the order she uses them in is the entire matchup.
She's the mid laner everyone thinks they understand, and the one most people lose to for a reason they never name. Plenty of mages hit harder than she does. Where she beats you is the timing: she picks the moment, executes it from a distance, and is already somewhere else before your jungler finishes walking over. Every genuine counter to her attacks that last part rather than the first (the burst is survivable, and the escape is what turns a survivable burst into a lost lane).
- A way to punish her after she has used her escape rather than before
- Magic resistance early, because the whole combo is one damage type
- Something that does not lose the lane to a missed skillshot

Ahri Overview
Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous
- One landed ability is the whole fight. Charm [E] doesn't need to do damage. It removes your control of your own champion at the moment she has everything else ready.
- She escapes after committing. Her ultimate is three separate movements, so she can enter a fight and spend her damage with two exits still left (one movement in, two out).
- She roams without giving up anything. Her wave clear means leaving the lane costs her almost nothing, and the lanes she visits are the ones with no escape of their own.
- Her damage arrives all at once. There's no ramp. The health bar you thought was safe was safe against a champion with a longer combo than hers.
- She heals through poke while doing it. The sustain built into her own farming pattern means a lane fought at range slowly goes to her rather than to you.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- A missed opener costs her the trade. Everything hangs on one skillshot, and it's slow, visible and easy to break line of sight on with a minion.
- Her escape is her only escape. Once the ultimate is spent she is an immobile mage standing in the middle of a lane, and that state lasts a long time.
- She is bad against people who can reach her. She has no crowd control other than the opener and nothing that survives being jumped on by someone who arrived anyway.
- Magic resistance works. There's no physical damage and no true damage anywhere in the kit, so one early item stays useful for the whole game.
- She has to walk forward to farm safely. Her sustain comes from doing something at a specific range, so her position is more predictable than it looks.
Countering Ahri
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Ahri comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Break line of sight with the wave. The opener is a slow projectile that stops on the first thing it touches, and minions are things.
- Punish her when the ultimate is down. It's a patience problem more than a mechanical one. The window is long and it happens several times a game.
- Buy magic resistance before you feel you need it. By the time the combo hurts enough to justify the item, the item is being bought after the death rather than instead of it.
- Track her roams instead of matching them. She leaves for free. You usually don't, and the trade where you both leave is the trade she wins.
If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Ahri Matchup
Farm under the tower and stop trying to win the lane. She has no way to dive a mid laner on her own, and a lane she can't end is a lane she has to keep spending time on.
Ask for a jungler after her ultimate goes down rather than before. A gank against a champion with three dashes left is a gank that produces nothing.
Ward the sides of the river. Almost all of the damage she does to your game is done in someone else's lane.
Best Ahri Counters
Three ways to beat someone who picks her own fights: refuse the opener, punish the escape, or beat her to the rest of the map. One counter each.

Fizz Refuses The Opener
He's the specific answer to her. The entire matchup runs through one slow projectile, and he has a button that makes him not be there when it arrives.
He also reaches her after the escape rather than before it, which is the half of the matchup most counters never get to.

Vex Punishes The Escape
Her kit is built to punish champions who solve their problems by dashing away, and this is a champion whose ultimate is three dashes in a row.
That turns the safest part of the enemy's pattern into the part she's being punished for. From the other side, it's a very uncomfortable lane to play.

Talon Gets To The Map First
Ahri likes to win lane and then leave it. Assassin's Path [E] jumps Talon across up to 800 units of wall at a time, so the river and the side lanes are a straight line for him while she walks the long way round.
When they do fight, Noxian Diplomacy [Q] is a point-and-click leap that follows a target who moves. Shadow Assault [R] turns him invisible for up to 2.5 seconds, and Charm [E] thrown at somebody you can't see is a guess.
Itemizing Against Ahri
The first two are the matchup and the last two are ordinary insurance:

Mercury's Treads shortens the one piece of crowd control that decides whether her combo happens at all, and shortening it is often the difference between a trade and a death. Banshee's Veil eats the opener outright (a stronger effect here than in most matchups, because the rest of her damage is aimed at a target who can't move). Zhonya's Hourglass is the answer for anyone she comes looking for personally. Force of Nature is for the late game, and it's worth buying even when it feels a bit overdue, because she has no second damage type to switch to.
