ARAM Mayhem Build

Vayne

Patch 26.19

Stack 400 armor against Vayne in ARAM Mayhem and she'll still take a tenth of your health bar every third hit. Here's the build that does it, and what actually slows her down when you're on the receiving end.

Why Your Armor Does Nothing

Every third consecutive hit from Vayne triggers Silver Bolts [W], which deals a percentage of the target's maximum health as true damage. True damage ignores armor completely. At max rank that's 10% of your max health, so a tank who bought 400 armor and 5,000 health still loses 500 to every third attack, and the extra health he stacked only makes the number bigger.

Patch 26.17 did nerf it. The early ranks dropped from 6% to 4%, and the minimum damage went down with them. The cut landed on the levels where the ability is weakest anyway, though, and 10% at max rank didn't move. By the time an ARAM Mayhem fight has three augments in it, Vayne is sitting on max rank and it's as if the nerf never happened.

ARAM itself is kind to her too. The mode's balance adjustments have her taking 5% less damage than she would on the Rift, with no penalty to her own.

The Build

The Mayhem stats sites agree on her core almost exactly, which is rarer than you'd think in a mode this random.

Core items, in order

  • Berserker's Greaves iconBerserker's Greaves
  • Blade of the Ruined King iconBlade of the Ruined King
  • Guinsoo's Rageblade iconGuinsoo's Rageblade
  • Terminus iconTerminus

This is an on-hit build with no crit in it, and that's on purpose. Blade of the Ruined King chunks tanks off their current health. Once Guinsoo's Rageblade is fully stacked, every third attack applies her on-hit effects twice. Terminus alternates between making her tankier and handing her armor penetration for the part of her damage armor still reduces. Mercury's Treads replace Berserker's Greaves when the enemy team has enough crowd control to lock her down.

Augments to Take

Dual Wield is the one to hope for. It's a Prismatic that fires an extra bolt behind every attack, and that bolt applies on-hit effects at reduced strength, so your Blade of the Ruined King and Rageblade effects land more often. It gives attack speed on top.

Fan the Hammer is the other Prismatic she wants. Attacking an enemy champion fires a volley of missiles that can crit and carry a slice of your on-hit effects. Each direction you attack from has its own cooldown, which suits a champion who spends every fight tumbling around her target.

On Gold screens, Scopier Weapons (more attack range) and Critical Missile (bonus missiles whenever you crit, plus some crit chance) both show up near the top of her lists. Range is worth more than it sounds here. Vayne's short reach is the one thing the other team can actually play around.

How to Beat Vayne in Mayhem

Stop buying armor to fix her. It helps against her normal attacks and does nothing to the hit that hurts. Cut her attack speed and her healing instead, because Silver Bolts [W] only fires every third hit and fewer hits means fewer procs.

  • Frozen Heart iconFrozen Heart
  • Plated Steelcaps iconPlated Steelcaps
  • Thornmail iconThornmail

Frozen Heart cuts the attack speed of every enemy near you by 20%. Plated Steelcaps take 10% off the damage of each attack. Thornmail applies Wounds to any champion attacking you, which cuts the life steal off her Blade of the Ruined King. Randuin's Omen is the usual anti-marksman buy and it's a poor one here, since it only reduces critical strikes and her build has almost none.

Beyond items, she's a short-range marksman in a mode with nowhere to hide. Point-and-click crowd control and burst that reaches the backline both work, and they work best before her third item. Condemn [E] is her one piece of peel, so the moment to jump on her is right after she's spent it.
