2017 Best Champions Tier List - Solo Queue Ranked Ladder Climbing - Patch 7.12 Update

Hi everyone and welcome to the latest update for Patch 7.12! As usual a few of you are scoffing at the positions on the early release FOTM Tier List, but there's really nothing to argue there since it's purely data driven by the collective community.

Meanwhile, please feel free to debate to your heart's content on the positions below! This time around I'm raising Draven up to God Tier despite the difficulty in his playstyle. The potential benefits you can get from practicing him is really just far too high right now, and there's only true one mechanic you need to learn (catching axes and hitting W when you catch one)

Kassadin's also being moved down this patch just a sliver simply because Malzahar is getting more and more popular, but feel free to keep playing Kass if you happen to be lower on the pick order.

Instructions and Caveats:

  • Champions in BOLD I will talk about shortly
  • Champions UNDERLINED may be over/undervalued, but aren't/haven't played enough for me to make a better judgment.
  • Within each tier, the champions are strongest from left to right, but within a tier each champion's strength is relatively close. This is especially true for Tiers 2 and 3 where these champions are ALL highly playable and player dependent on how strong they are in-game.
  • Win Rates are important in analyzing each champion's strength but are not the end-all criteria for any champion's position.
  • Professional Picks may not necessarily translate into good picks for solo queue ladder, the two have slightly different meta-games and skill levels.
  • The creator of this list is diamond, so there may be some personal bias towards higher tier play on certain champions.

Champion Explanations

  • Annie [God Tier Mid] - Annie's been a stable pick for a years on this list, but lately she's getting a lot of support from other vocal players for her ability to 100 to 0 enemy champions with very little counter-play. Her lane pressure and roaming ability are immense, resulting in a very powerful mid-lane pick. Just remember, you heard it here first folks.
  • Aurelion Sol [Tier 1 Mid] - Aurelion Sol continues to be a very underrated pick. His sustained damage and roaming ability are incredibly good, but it's really the unclear decision making for enemies that allow Aurelion Sol players to dominate the rift. It's very difficult for enemies to determine if they should get closer or try and outrange Sol's stars, but since most players build Boots of Swiftness and Rylai's on Sol, he always has the advantage no matter where enemies try and move.
  • Draven [God Tier Marksman] - It is true that Draven is a bit more difficult than other marksman to pick up and play. However, in his current state he boasts an incredible return on effort as a result of his Death's Dance build. Virtually unkillable, Draven needs to be CC'd down or else he can quickly snowball into 1v3 scenarios, dominating games even without the help of his support.
  • Jax [Tier 1 Jungle] - The latest Jax buffs are quite good for him as a jungler, as it gives him just a bit more range to finish off fleeing enemy champions. Meanwhile, the top marksmen are EXTREMELY auto-attack heavy (as opposed to an Ezreal/Jhin meta). This means that his Counter Strike [E] is even more potent than usual.
  • Jhin [Tier 2 Marksman] - Jhin's latest buffs were decent, but not particularly game-breaking, especially when compared to the big three.
  • Kassadin [Tier 1 Mid] - Kassadin's being moved down a little simply because of the large shift back to long range poke mages. Although Kassadin can snowball hard against this lane, his team fighting ability is greatly reduced as a result of his low wave clear. The re-introduction of Malzahar as a powerhouse also makes it quite difficult to blind-pick Kassadin.
  • Malzahar [Tier 1 Mid] - Despite getting nerfed this patch, the "bug-fix" on his ultimate's interaction with QSS looks like it ended up making him stronger overall. It's also nice that Kassadin is super popular now, since Malzahar is Kassadin's hardest counter.
  • Nunu [God Tier Jungle] - Zac nerfs and the shift to an auto-attack heavy marksman meta have made Nunu insanely powerful on the rift. His attack speed boosts and attack speed slows are especially effective, and overall he's simply a giant ball of stats that is very difficult to take down. Once he picks up Gargoyle Stoneplate, the synergy with his passive and Cinderhulk is also impossibly difficult to deal with, even with Blade of the Ruined King as a result of the attack speed slow stacks.
  • Riven [God Tier Top] - Riven's been quite good ever since the animation cancelling changes a few patches ago. There are also a few more additional combos that were discovered recently that allow her to really be quite a faceroll champion, even in the hands of players that haven't played her much.
  • Twitch [God Tier Marksman] - Twitch is simply one of the most obnoxious champions on the rift. Once he gets his items, if he crits he can essentially take down entire teams in the span or 3 or 4 auto attacks. This means that the moment he appears, the entire enemy team MUST blow all summoners to take him out immediately or risk losing the fight before they can even engage. Even with flash + exhaust from the enemy support, the first hit or two is enough to drop a back line if Twitch positions himself well.
  • Xayah [Tier 2 Marksman] - Xayah's latest nerf represents a 40% nerf to her Deadly Plumage [W] at level 1 and a 33% nerf to it at max level. When you couple this with the removal of basic attacks during her Double Daggers [Q], it turns out this double whammy makes her quite weak now even if you happen to be a Xayah main.
