Introduction

Ever since the Ekko buffs last patch and some extra loving from the LCS professional scene, Tank Ekko has made a massive resurgence as a top laner. With his strong base damage and ability to soak massive amounts of damage for free, he's quickly rising as the most feared top laner on the rift.

How to Play
RunesAbility Power Quints, Magic Penetration Reds, Flat Armor Yellows, Flat Magic Resist Blues
Masteries: 12-0-18, Grasp of the Undying Masteries
Abilities: Q, E, W then prioritize R > Q > E > W
Core Items: Sunfire Cape, Iceborn Gauntlet, Boots of Swiftness, Spirit Visage, Abyssal Scepter, Deadman's Plate

Why It Works

Iceborn Gauntlet Synergy
As a melee based champion with excellent gap closers and slows, Ekko can chased down and pin the majority of enemies. Iceborn Gauntlet furthers this aim, and also gives him enhanced cooldowns. As an item that's very strong on the rift in general, the combination of Iceborn + Sunfire allows for extremely cost efficient itemization for Tank Ekko top.

Passive Percentage Based Damage
Weighing in at a powerful 5% base of the target's missing health, the passive on Ekko's Parallel Convergence (W) scales hard into late game and keeps him relevant, even against fellow tanks. Naturally, the active on his move is also capable of game changing AOE stuns as well.

Powerful Damage Soaking Abilities
As a tank, Ekko can absorb much more punishment before he dies. This works in perfect synergy with his Chronobreak (R), which allows him to recuperate a large part of the initial peel damage he takes when he jumps into the middle of a team fight.

Potential Pitfalls

Difficult to Land Stun
Although his stun is very powerful when it lands, it's somewhat difficult to reliably use it, especially as a result of the casting delay. However, as a tank he gets a much larger margin for error with regards to casting it, and missing it won't always be a life-or-death situation.

Slow Early Game Burst
One of Ekko's main weaknesses lies in the fact that the return hit on his Q is much stronger than the initial hit. This means that to play Ekko properly, you have to predict enemy movements to maximize his damage. You can also save your gap closer for after you hit the first Q, which allows you to guarantee the pullback hit as well.

Weak Against Sustain In Lane
A champion that relies on being in melee range to maximize his damage, Ekko's sustained damage is not as strong against champions like Darius or Zac top. However, his mobility is still very high, and can generally make it to the back line without trouble during team fights.

Conclusions

As a whole, Ekko is a champion with strong mobility and excellent utility. Generally, his assassin build requires a higher level of proficiency to master, especially since he has timings on his spells that need to be kept in mind.

When tank Ekko is in the meta, it's generally a much easier champion to pick up and play, and requires much less in the way of practice to get good at. In his current form, Ekko works extremely well with two of the most gold efficient items on the rift (Sunfire Cape and Iceborn Gauntlet). As a result, Tank Ekko Top is currently very strong with excellent base damage and near invulnerability as a result of his ultimate.

Suggested Rating: God Tier
