How Relic Shield/Targon's Brace Works - Overpowered?

Ever since the Patch 3.14 hit, players have been experimenting with the new items. However, it's Targon's Brace and Relic Shield specifically that has caught the eye of many high level players.

How it Works:
Relic shield has 2 charges, and Targon has 4, which recharge every 30 seconds. While the charges are up, if the person who has the charge last hits a minion, you BOTH get the kill gold, and your ally gets healed and gets bonus gold. This means that if there's a siege minion be sure to get the proc on it!

This means that when the support has charges up there is no drawback to them killing a creep. Additionally, they get an execute bonus damage, so it's pretty easy to last hit them when they want.

Check out the numbers:

NEW: Relic Shield
  • Costs 365 Gold
  • +50 Health
  • +6 Health Regen per 5 seconds
  • UNIQUE Passive - Spoils of War: Basic attacks execute minions below 200 Health. Killing a minion heals the nearest allied champion for 2% of your maximum Health and grants them the bounty plus 5 Gold.
    • These effects require a nearby allied champion. Recharges every 30 seconds. Max 2 charges.

NEW: Targon's Brace
  • Recipe: Relic Shield + 485 Gold (Total 850 Gold)
  • +175 Health
  • +12 Health Regen per 5 seconds
  • UNIQUE Passive - Spoils of War: Basic attacks execute minions below 200 Health. Killing a minion heals the nearest allied champion for 2% of your maximum Health and grants them the bounty plus 10 Gold
    • These effects require a nearby allied champion. Recharges every 30 seconds. Max 4 charges=
Analysis
So far the biggest advantage that these items have is that in a duo lane, both laners can use these items and they will both work simultaneously. This means that by maximizing the charges on the items, a duo lane with the items can push harder than a lane without the items, and also gets a HUGE amount of bonus gold + sustain!

It seems fairly OP so far, and definitely works best against poke lanes. Against a kill lane it may not work as well, but by continuously executing creeps, it's fairly easy to get a minion advantage that will turn 2v2s into your favor early game.

  1. I don't think you are supposed to get the money yourself as well, as it clearly states "grants _them_ the bounty", so if that is the case it may be a bug? Also, there are three gold granting items (Spellthief's Edge, Ancient Coin, and Relic Shield, each of which can be upgraded), and you can own only one at a time. The other two are equally strong. Also, if you buy Relic Shield, you cannot buy Talisman of Ascension, which used to be called Shurelya's Reverie.

  2. adc can spend their gold to get the lifesteal sword, or the pickaxe which is a way better investment for them, however double relic lane allows you to push insanely hard, which can be decent if : Enemy duo struggle with last hits ; You make sure you are immune to ganks ; Your support makes good (aka deadly) use of this bonus gold (annie dfg rushers etc.).

Else it is just not worth if you are adc imo, you will gain his value back at about 20-25 min, thats pretty long.

Also, the evolution of relic (into the shield thing) is more expensive than others iirc and the active is meh, with spellthief you get a aoe big slow (and quite some ap), with coin you get shurelya, these probably have way more utility potential, and you get about the same amount of gold in the end with those.

Also I saw a thresh end game with 100 pillaged gold on his relic : if you get denied you lose hard.

So, maybe all the hype is for nothing. (but it looks a bit op still, giving free gold & sustain to adc)

You do get the money yourself as well. The major difference is that it gives you a much stronger in-lane pushing power, and also allows your team to sustain on sieges. If your team snowballs hard enough early to mid game, Shurelia's late game potential is almost negligible.

It's also a 850 gold vs 2000 gold difference at the moment, so I think it's definitely still worth it.

Thresh likely wasn't trying very hard to maximize his charges, since with the execute damage the person with the item does a LOT more damage than basic attacks from ADCs.

  5. Thanks for the reply, you are right that you both get the gold, and some calculations below show that this should also be the case.

There is no cost difference between the three lines. All three steps of Ancient Coin -> Nomad's Medallion -> Talisman of Ascension have the same cost as Relic Shield (365) -> Targon's Brace (850) -> Face of the Mountain (2000), as well as Spellthief's Edge -> Frostfang -> Frost Queen's Claim.

Don't forget that Spellthief's Edge has 2gp10, while Frostfang and up have 4 gp4, as well as 4/8 gold for basic attacks against champions (can proc once up to every 10 seconds per champion). If you are poking a lot, that may give quite a lot of money. Nomad's and Talisman have 2gp10 and grant 4 gold for every minion that dies near you that you do not kill (it is actually not clear whether your teammate should deal the killing blow, but probably so), Ancient Coin gives 2 gold for that.

Siege minions occur only once every minute, so you can get at most 60 (+ a bit) gold per minute extra and your marksman 20 with Targon's Brace, assuming you are both constantly in lane and manage to last hit all siege units. Nomad's Medallion gives 12 gold per minute whatever you do, and at most 52 gold per two waves, assuming your marksman last-hits all 13 minions, so slightly less maximum, but perhaps the variance in income is lower. Frostfang generates 24 gold per minute whatever you are doing and another 96 gold per minute when proccing the passive as often as possible against two lane opponents. The latter is of course even more difficult than last hitting all siege minions. Anyway, all these items generate a lot of gold, it may be that Targon's brace is better, but not so obviously, at least in my opinion, so the other stats on the items do matter.

They nerfed it to 60 seconds recharge on the PBE. it was to be expected.

  7. Im disgusted at the fact that an adc is using a support item. Riot should implement a way so that it cannot be used on anyone other than the support.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmUvO2Rli4g a spanish video I was just watching

In short, it's the 3/4 players strategy with relic shield at the general's stream
