A lot of players still follow a build guide to the letter no matter how the game is actually going. That works right up until it does not, and the fix is almost always the same: buy the defensive item the enemy team is begging you not to buy.
Strategy Guide
Situational Defensive Items
One thing you still see in a lot of games is players following a guide to the letter, no matter how the game is running. That works some of the time. The worst moment to keep following it is when it clearly is not working and you are dying an awful lot.
That does not mean the guide is bad, and it does not mean you are a bad player. It means the enemy team built toward your weakness faster than you built toward theirs.
Every champion has core items. The real question is what comes after them, and what you do when the enemy is farming their own core items faster than you are. That is the moment to take a preemptive defensive measure, before they start feeding off you.

Armor Items
Frozen Heart
2500 gold · 75 Armor, 400 Mana, 20 Ability Haste
Still one of the three highest armor items in the game, and still the one that punishes an attack damage carry hardest. Winter's Caress cuts the attack speed of nearby champions by 20%, so it protects the four people standing near you as much as it protects you. The ability haste makes it comfortable on any champion who wants to cast more often, which is why it never really left the build lists.
Thornmail
2450 gold · 75 Armor, 150 Health
Buy this the moment the enemy team is out-healing your damage rather than out-damaging your health. Getting struck by an attack applies 40% Wounds to a champion, which is the real reason to build it now. The reflected magic damage is a bonus on top of shutting off lifesteal and healing.
Randuin's Omen
2700 gold · 75 Armor, 350 Health
The specialist answer to critical strikes, cutting the damage you take from them by 30%. Against a fed marksman stacking infinity edge style damage, that number does more for you than raw armor does. The active slows everyone near you by 70%, which turns a lost fight into an escape.
Magic Resist Items
Force of Nature
2800 gold · 55 Magic Resist, 400 Health, 4% Move Speed
The same idea it always was. Take magic damage from champions eight times and Steadfast pushes it to 70 magic resist and 6% bonus move speed, so it rewards you for surviving the poke instead of avoiding it. It still makes you tanky against spells while giving you enough speed to leave a fight and come back to it.
Kaenic Rookern
2900 gold · 80 Magic Resist, 400 Health
The highest flat magic resist available on a single item, and the better buy against burst. Go 15 seconds without taking magic damage and Magebane hands you a magic shield, which means the assassin who was going to open on you has to break the shield before touching your health bar.
Spirit Visage
2700 gold · 50 Magic Resist, 400 Health, 10 Ability Haste
The pick for anyone who already heals or shields themselves, since Boundless Vitality raises all of it by 25%. On a champion with no healing in their kit it is the weakest of the three. On one with a big heal it is comfortably the strongest.
If you are playing a fighter rather than a tank, Maw of Malmortius (3100 gold) is the version that does not cost you damage to build. It carries 40 magic resist alongside 60 attack damage, and dropping below 30% health from magic damage grants a shield plus omnivamp for the rest of the fight.
When Resistances Are Not Enough
Guardian Angel
3200 gold · 45 Armor, 55 Attack Damage
Sometimes the problem is not that you take too much damage, it is that you die before your team can trade for you. Rebirth buys four seconds of stasis and half your base health back, which is often the difference between losing a fight and winning it a second late.
Mercurial Scimitar
3200 gold · 35 Magic Resist, 50 Attack Damage
Magic resist does nothing about a five second crowd control chain. The Quicksilver active removes those debuffs and hands you move speed, so buy it when a specific enemy ultimate is the thing killing you rather than the enemy team's damage as a whole.
Sterak's Gage
3200 gold · 400 Health, 20% Tenacity
The answer when the damage is coming from everywhere at once and no single resistance fixes it. The Lifeline shield triggers below 30% health regardless of damage type, and the tenacity shortens every piece of crowd control on the way in.
Buy the Component Early
The most useful advice here has not changed in fifteen years, and it is still the part most players skip. You do not have to finish a defensive item to benefit from one.
A Negatron Cloak costs 850 gold and gives 45 magic resist on its own. If the enemy mage is hitting you awfully hard early, buy it before they start killing you rather than after. It still builds into Force of Nature, exactly as it did in 2011, and into Kaenic Rookern as well.
The same goes for a Chain Vest at 800 gold for 40 armor. That is usually enough to hold a lane until the enemy assembles their own core items, and it builds into Thornmail when you are ready to finish it.
Buying the component on the back you were already taking costs you nothing in tempo. Dying twice because you saved for the full item costs you the lane.
