FOTM Report: Runic Echos Udyr

Hi everyone, and welcome to the long promised report on Runic Echos Udyr! As a champion that scales off AP on both his Phoenix Stance (R) and his Turtle Stance (W), Udyr gains a surprisingly high amount of stats from building AP. However, this doesn't mean that you should start dropping Deathcaps or Zhonya's on him anytime soon (although that would be funny).

A hyper-tanky split pusher, Udyr is currently a massive powerhouse that's near impossible to stop. Check out the details below!

Introduction

Hi everyone, and welcome to the long promised report on Runic Echos Udyr! As a champion that scales off AP on both his Phoenix Stance (R) and his Turtle Stance (W), Udyr gains a surprisingly high amount of stats from building AP. However, this doesn't mean that you should start dropping Deathcaps or Zhonya's on him anytime soon (although that would be funny).

A hyper-tanky split pusher, Udyr is currently a massive powerhouse that's near impossible to stop. Check out the details below!

How to Play
Runes: Movespeed Quints, Attack Speed Reds, Flat Armor Yellows, 6 Flat Cooldown Reduction, 3 Flat Magic Resist Blues
Masteries: 0-12-18, Tanky Jungler Masteries
Abilities: R, W, R, E then prioritize R > W > E > Q
Core Items: Stalker's Blade (Runic Echos), Boots of Swiftness, Zz'Rot Portal, Trinity Force/Iceborn Gauntlet, Dead Man's Plate, Spirit Visage/Thornmail

Why It Works

Insane Movement Speed
Naturally a fast champion, Udyr's movement speed is further enunciated by the 10% boost via Runic Echos and the rest of the movement speed increasing items in this build. This leads to an uncatchable Udyr when he puts on his bear stance or alternatively an inescapable Udyr as well.

Split Pushing Monster
When it comes to split pushing, this Udyr build allows a good player to split push to his heart's content. Waveclear, sustain, movespeed, and durability are just some of his tools at his disposal. However, these are more than enough to ensure that enemy teams need to send one or even three of their strongest to stop him from exacting his purpose. Meanwhile, this opens the rest of their team up to siege or engage on other locations on the map in unfavorable conditions.

Flexible Jungle
Although Udyr can't spam his spells early in the jungle without seeing a strong dip in his mana pool, he can still clear from most positions without trouble. This also means that his level two invades are also very plausible, and allows him to be a threat at all points in the game.

Potential Pitfalls

Knowledge Based Ganks
As a champion with limited gap closing potential, Udyr requires knowledge of ward locations as well as which ganks are viable and which as simply a waste of time. Additionally, the temptation to follow up a gank through a turret as Udyr is extremely high, but requires experience to know what he can get away with and what he cannot.

Weak Teamfight Potential
Despite being a monster 1v1 or even 1v2 specialist, Udyr does suffer somewhat in 5v5 teamfights. His engagement skill is very straightforward, and often results in him getting feathered with arrows before reaching his intended target, even with flash. However, with Zz'Rot Portal Udyr can still assist in extended sieges if he's not strong enough to split push or if the enemy team is running strong waveclear specialists.

Prone to Kiting
The general weakness that keeps Udyr down is the ability to get into melee range to deal his damage. Against champions like Blue Ezreal, this may be difficult. However, the slow reduction from boots of swiftness combined with the movespeed boosts available to him in the current patch appear to be more than enough for him to be a serious threat.

Conclusions

Runic Echoes Udyr is a simple matter of numbers. He's fast enough, tanky enough, and strong enough to run deep into the enemy base. He can get away quickly if enemy champions are high in number, and can also duel them down if they only send one to stop him.

He's a general nuisance at all points in the game, but very difficult to kill despite that. By creating optimal number advantages on other spots on the map, Udyr allows his team to carry themselves by fighting the strongest the enemy team has to offer and leaving the stragglers for his teammates to pick apart.

Suggested Rating: God Tier
