How to Beat Zeri

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

Zeri is a marksman who never stands still, so the usual plan of waiting for a carry to plant their feet doesn't work on her.

She breaks half of the shorthand. You look for the moment a carry has to stand still, and with her it doesn't come, because her movement is a state she lives in. The other half still holds: buy armor. Burst Fire [Q] is physical damage that can crit, and it's the button she presses all game. Granted, she also has a very long stretch of the game where none of that matters yet, and that stretch is where this matchup gets decided. The solo queue tier list shows the company she keeps.

Zeri Overview

Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous

  • Her damage keeps coming while she moves. Living Battery [Passive] charges as she runs and casts, and Burst Fire [Q] fires on the move, so she's shooting at you the whole time she's kiting you.
  • She doesn't stop moving. Spark Surge [E] vaults terrain, and Lightning Crash [R] stacks movement speed that keeps refreshing, so the fight is happening at a speed nobody else chose.
  • She reaches further than she looks. Ultrashock Laser [W] covers a long distance and slows, and it gets longer when it clips a wall.
  • She snowballs off a single fight. The overcharge refreshes on takedowns, so one good engage turns into her being everywhere for the next thirty seconds.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • The early game is genuinely poor. Her damage before items is low and her trades are unimpressive, and that window is long. Almost everything below happens inside it.
  • She's extremely item dependent. A Zeri who has been denied farm turns into a different and much weaker champion.
  • Hard crowd control ends her. Her whole defense is movement, so being held still removes it completely and she has nothing underneath.
  • Armor blunts her. Burst Fire [Q] and Ultrashock Laser [W] both deal physical damage, and Randuin's Omen takes 30% off the crits she builds toward.
  • She has no burst. Her damage is a rate, so a target who leaves rather than trading is a target she often can't finish.

Countering Zeri

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Zeri comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Buy armor, not magic resistance. Her basic attacks are technically magic, but Burst Fire [Q] is where the damage comes from and it's physical.
  • Bring crowd control that doesn't need to predict a dash. A hook is a guess. A point and click lock isn't.
  • Fight her in the first fifteen minutes. That's the window (a large one). Waiting is the losing plan.
  • Deny the farm rather than chasing the kill. She converts gold into a completely different champion, so the farm is worth more than the kill is.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Zeri Matchup

Don't chase her past a wall. That's the ground she's best on and she has already decided how the chase ends.

Take the short trades and refuse the long ones. Her damage grows with how long she's allowed to keep firing, so stepping out early costs less than it feels like it does.

Treat her ultimate as a reason to disengage rather than as a reason to commit. Once it's running she's faster than you and the fight is on her terms until it ends.

Best Zeri Counters

Chain her in place, end the fight before her movement matters, or take the movement away.

Nautilus champion icon

Nautilus Chains Her In Place

Everything she does about being caught is movement, and he has more crowd control than she has ways of leaving. Once the first piece lands the rest of the chain arrives and she has nothing else underneath.

His ultimate matters most of all here (she can't dash out of the way of it). Against a champion whose defense is repositioning, a lock that can't be dodged is the answer.

Tristana champion icon

Tristana Ends The Fight Early

Zeri wants a long fight she can move around in. Explosive Charge [E] builds with every attack and ability Tristana lands on its target, then detonates in one lump, and that ends a trade before the extra movement has done anything.

Rocket Jump [W] also covers far more ground than a standard Spark Surge [E], and it resets on a takedown. The chase Zeri usually wins is one Tristana can finish.

Jinx champion icon

Jinx Takes The Movement Away

Flame Chompers! [E] roots any champion that walks over one for 1.5 seconds, and walking is Zeri's whole plan for every fight. Throw them on the path she wants to take, and the kite ends on a trap.

Zap! [W] slows and reveals from 1500 units, which reaches her after Spark Surge [E] has carried her somewhere she thought was safe. A slowed Zeri is a marksman with no burst standing in range.

Itemizing Against Zeri

Treat her like any other crit marksman and buy armor. Magic resistance is wasted gold here:

Plated SteelcapsRanduin's OmenFrozen HeartThornmail

Plated Steelcaps are the cheap one, and they do more than the armor number suggests: they cut damage from attacks by 10%, and Burst Fire [Q] is treated as an attack. Randuin's Omen is the big one for whoever she keeps diving. It takes 30% off critical strikes, and a Zeri with a few crit items is mostly crits. Frozen Heart cuts the attack speed of every champion near you by 20%, which slows the rate her damage comes out at (and her damage is all rate). Thornmail is for the frontliner she shoots through to reach your carry, since every hit she lands on it applies Wounds to her.
