How to Beat Twitch

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

Twitch is the only marksman whose best game happens entirely before anybody has seen him.

The stealth is the champion. He wins by arriving (through Ambush [Q]) from a direction nobody was watching and starting a fight from the middle of a team rather than from the back of one, and the counterplay is a vision problem disguised as a mechanical one. Teams that lose to him rarely lose the fight. They lose the twenty seconds before it, standing in a river they hadn't looked at.

Twitch Overview

Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous

  • He picks the angle. Ambush [Q] means the fight starts where he wants it to, and a marksman standing behind your team is a very different problem from one standing behind his own.
  • His team fight damage is close to the top of the game. Long range attacks that pierce through everybody turn a grouped enemy team into a single target, and there's no way to stand that stops it.
  • The poison rewards patience. He doesn't need to win a trade to be winning a lane, because damage he applied twenty seconds ago is still counting.
  • He punishes lazy vision permanently. A team that stops warding for two minutes gives him a free kill, and the lead he takes from that compounds faster than most marksmen's.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • The early lane is genuinely poor. Before he has items he loses most straight exchanges, and there are several bot lane pairs that can simply take the first ten minutes off him.
  • He has no escape. The stealth is an approach tool with a long cooldown. Once he's been caught he's a squishy marksman standing still.
  • Vision undoes him completely. A sweeper and a couple of wards turn the champion off, because everything he does starts with the ambush.
  • He has to get close to do the scary version. Granted, the range on his big damage window is long, but the poison stacks that make it lethal require him to have been near people first.
  • He's fragile even by marksman standards. There's nothing defensive anywhere in the kit, so any crowd control that lands on him ends his participation.

Countering Twitch

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Twitch comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Buy the sweeper and use it. The trinket isn't a late-game purchase against him. Sweeping the entrances to your own lane is worth more than any item in the first fifteen minutes.
  • Win the lane while it's winnable. He's beatable early and a nightmare late, so a bot lane that plays it safe is choosing the half of the game he's better at.
  • Have crowd control ready for a target you can't currently see. The answer to an ambush is a button pressed the instant he appears.
  • Don't fight in the fog. Any objective taken without vision around it is an invitation. Take the extra thirty seconds and clear the brush first.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Twitch Matchup

Ward wide rather than deep. The point is to see him crossing into your jungle, and the cheap wards on the side entrances do that better than the expensive ones do.

Play the mid game grouped and in the open. His best fights happen in a corridor where the flank is short. In an open fight with everyone looking, the approach he needs takes long enough to react to.

Force the objective early rather than late. Every minute the game goes on is a minute in his favor, and a team that keeps waiting for a better window is handing him the one he wanted.

Best Twitch Counters

Wall off his damage, catch him the moment he shows up, or make his attacks miss when it counts.

Yasuo champion icon

Yasuo Walls Off The Damage

Almost all of Twitch's damage travels through the air, and Yasuo carries a wall that destroys projectiles. That includes the piercing bolts from his ultimate, the moment in a fight where Twitch is supposed to hit everybody at once.

Timing decides it. Twitch comes out of stealth, starts the ultimate, and a wall that goes up a second later eats most of what he fires for the next four seconds.

Blitzcrank champion icon

Blitzcrank Catches Him

A champion with no dash and no way out is the ideal target for a grab, and Twitch has to walk into grab range to do the thing he was planning.

It also flips the ambush. The moment he becomes visible is the moment somebody gets to press a button on him, and one is usually enough.

Nilah champion icon

Nilah Makes Him Miss

Her veil makes her dodge every basic attack for a couple of seconds, and it spreads to allies she touches. Twitch's damage is built on basic attacks, so that's a couple of seconds where the fight only goes one way.

She wants the short, messy fight anyway. Twitch wants to open from stealth at the edge of it, and a Nilah already standing on top of him when he appears is the version he loses.

Itemizing Against Twitch

The first two are the matchup and they're both cheap; the last two are for the part where he's already on top of you:

Control WardOracle LensPlated SteelcapsRanduin's Omen

A Control Ward is the single most cost effective purchase anybody makes against him, and the mistake is treating it as something the support buys rather than something everybody does. Oracle Lens should be swapped in far earlier than usual here (the trinket is the difference between a fight you started and a fight that started around you). Plated Steelcaps addresses the actual damage (basic attacks that keep arriving for as long as he's alive). Randuin's Omen is the team fight version, and it belongs on the front line rather than on his target, because slowing him down during his big window is what turns it from a wipe into a trade.
