Counter Guide
How to Beat Jax
There's no worse feeling in top lane than landing nothing at all for three seconds and then getting stunned for having tried.
Counter Strike [E] is one of the few abilities in the game that punishes you for playing correctly. You commit, everything whiffs, and then he stuns you and wins a trade he was losing. That's infuriating, and Jax is a permanent fixture on our solo queue tier list partly because of it. Counter Strike [E] only dodges one specific category of damage, though. Most people never actually test the other one.
- Ability damage rather than basic attacks, because Counter Strike [E] only dodges attacks
- A silence, a knockup, or enough range that the stun never happens
- Real pressure in the first five levels, since that's the only stretch where he's beatable on stats

Jax Overview
Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous
- Counter Strike [E] dodges every incoming basic attack for the duration and then stuns everyone around him, which turns your best trade window into his.
- The longer the fight runs, the faster he hits. His attack speed stacks on consecutive attacks and it doesn't stop climbing.
- He gets tankier exactly when you commit to killing him. His ultimate can be activated for armor and magic resist on top of the damage it already adds.
- Leap Strike [Q] targets any unit, including a minion or a ward, and it's on a 6 second cooldown by rank 5.
- He scales harder than almost anything in the lane. A Jax with three items isn't the champion you laned against.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- Counter Strike [E] only dodges basic attacks. Single-target ability damage passes straight through it, and area abilities only lose a slice. Most players find that out far too late.
- His first four levels are genuinely bad. No wave clear, no sustain, and no way to disengage from a lane bully.
- The stun is slow to arrive. Unless he recasts early, it goes off at the end of the full stance, which telegraphs exactly when to step out of the radius.
- Mana. Empower [W] and Leap Strike [Q] together drain him quickly in the levels where he can least afford it.
- Nothing in his kit works at range. Not a single ability threatens anyone who refuses to come within a few hundred units.
Countering Jax
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Jax comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Use abilities during Counter Strike [E]. It's a dodge for basic attacks and nothing else. Everything that isn't a basic attack still lands (area damage takes a small cut, single-target spells don't).
- Walk out of the radius instead of trading through it. The stun is an area around him, and stepping back for two seconds costs you pretty much nothing.
- Bring a silence or a knockup. Both stop the ability from happening at all, which is better than waiting it out.
- Punish levels 1 through 4 hard. He has no answer during them and every plate you take is a plate he needed to scale.
If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Jax Matchup
Bait Counter Strike [E] with a single basic attack, walk backward, then commit. It's a long cooldown early (17 seconds at rank 1), and the trade after it is a completely different fight.
Freeze the wave near your tower rather than shoving. Jax with no wave clear and no sustain is a Jax who either walks into your side of the lane or falls behind, and both outcomes are fine for you.
Buy Plated Steelcaps first if you're an AD top laner, and get it before your damage component. His scaling is basic attacks and it starts mattering earlier than most people plan for.
Play for objectives rather than the lane once he's got two items. The lane stops being winnable at that point. The map doesn't, and plenty of Jax games get lost by people who keep fighting in the lane anyway.
Best Jax Counters
Jax wants long trades that open with a dodge. Garen heals through them, Kennen never takes one, and Cho'Gath silences Counter Strike [E] before it starts.
Garen Heals Through the Trades
Perseverance [Passive] regenerates Garen's health whenever he's been out of combat for a few seconds. Jax can't keep him in combat from range. Every trade Jax takes and walks away from gets healed back before the next wave.
Courage [W] adds tenacity and a shield, which shortens the Counter Strike [E] stun and soaks what comes after it. Judgment [E] is a spin rather than a string of basic attacks, so Counter Strike [E] only softens it. Then there's Demacian Justice [R]. It deals true damage, and the resistances from Grandmaster-at-Arms [R] don't touch it.
Kennen Never Comes Into Range
Thundering Shuriken [Q] reaches 950 units and Electrical Surge [W] reaches 725. Jax has one 700 unit leap and nothing else, so Kennen gets to poke a melee champion who has no wave clear and no sustain, with no realistic way for that to be punished.
Mark of the Storm [Passive] stuns on the third application, so the moment Jax does leap in he's stunned rather than dodging, and Lightning Rush [E] lets Kennen pass through units to leave before Counter Strike [E] ever finishes charging. It's also all magic damage, which sidesteps the armor half of his ultimate.
Cho'Gath Silences the Dodge
Feral Scream [W] silences everything in a cone in front of Cho'Gath, and a silenced Jax can't cast Counter Strike [E] at all. That removes the dodge, the stun and the reason to be scared of trading into him, all on a 9 second cooldown at rank 5.
Rupture [Q] knocks him into the air before he closes and slows him afterward, Vorpal Spikes [E] turns his own attack speed stacking into a losing exchange, and Feast [R] deals true damage that his ultimate's resistances do nothing about. Carnivore [Passive] also means Cho'Gath simply out-sustains the lane (he heals every time he kills a minion).
Itemizing Against Jax
Jax deals physical damage with magic layered on through his ultimate, and all of it comes off basic attacks:
Frozen Heart is the standout because it attacks Relentless Assault [Passive] directly, and his whole damage curve is built on stacking attack speed. Plated Steelcaps is the earliest version of the same idea. Thornmail punishes him for the attacks that do land and applies grievous wounds to any lifesteal he bought, and Randuin's Omen cuts the critical strikes out of his later build.
