How to Beat Gragas

Matchup Guide · Evergreen · 3 Counter Picks

Gragas doesn't beat you in a fight. He decides where the fight happens, and by then you're already standing in it.

He looks like a big drunk man who throws a keg (to be fair, he is one), and that framing does him a favor, because the actual problem is a lot more specific. Everything he casts moves somebody. The barrel moves you toward him, the body slam moves him into you, and the ultimate moves your whole team somewhere your carries didn't agree to go. Fights against him get lost on geography far more often than on damage. Check the solo queue tier list if you want a sense of the company he keeps.

Gragas Overview

Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous

  • He fights where he wants to. Explosive Cask [R] is a thousand units of reach that ends with somebody standing next to his team, and he doesn't need to hit five people for it to work (one is plenty if it's the right one).
  • The engage arrives through terrain. Body Slam [E] charges through walls, so the distance on your minimap and the distance he actually has to travel are two different numbers.
  • He takes trades better than he has any right to. Drunken Rage [W] gives him damage reduction while it's running, so a burst that would kill an ordinary mage lands on a much thicker version of him.
  • He never stops being useful. The kit does its job on zero items. He can build entirely for surviving and still change every fight on the map, so falling behind barely slows him down.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • Everything he does is a skillshot with a delay. The barrel has to land, then arm, then detonate. Nothing in his kit is point-and-click, so a champion who keeps moving is a champion he keeps missing.
  • The escape and the engage are the same button. Once Body Slam [E] is spent, he's a slow melee mage standing in a fight for a good ten seconds with nothing to leave on.
  • Mana runs out. He clears the jungle and shoves the wave by throwing spells, and the version of him that has been doing that for three minutes can't also afford a long fight.
  • His ultimate is on a long leash. Miss it (or use it badly) and he's on the wrong end of a minute and a half where he can't reset a fight at all. That's the window every counter below is trying to reach.
  • He wants you clumped. Standing apart costs you nothing and takes most of the value out of the biggest spell he owns.

Countering Gragas

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Gragas comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Fight him while his gap closer is down. Count it. He commits with Body Slam [E] and he leaves with Body Slam [E], and he can't do both.
  • Stay out of the clump. The ultimate wants a group. Spread out before the fight starts.
  • Bring lockdown that beats a dash. A root or a knock up that lands as he arrives turns his engage into a very expensive way of standing in the open.
  • Buy magic resistance early. His poke is all magic and it stops mattering surprisingly fast once one item is in.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Gragas Matchup

Respect the wall more than the champion. If you can see him on the minimap and there's terrain between you, assume the terrain isn't there. That's the mistake that ends most of these games.

Don't stand next to your support at an objective pit. He's looking for two bodies in one cask, and the pit is where people forget to spread.

When he throws the barrel, walk toward him rather than away. The detonation pushes you back regardless, so the step you take before it goes off is the only one that's yours.

Best Gragas Counters

Beat him to the engage, deny him the gap, or refuse to die inside the combo.

Jarvan IV champion icon

Jarvan IV Wins The Commitment

Gragas has one button that gets him out of a fight and Jarvan has one that makes leaving impossible. The flag and drag lands instantly instead of arriving after a delay, and Cataclysm [R] puts a wall around exactly the champion whose whole plan was to relocate people.

The trade also flatters Jarvan mechanically. Gragas wants to be the one choosing the ground, and a Jarvan who engages first has already made that choice for him.

Kindred champion icon

Kindred Refuses To Die In The Combo

His entire burst is a setup and a payoff, and Lamb's Respite [R] deletes the payoff. Dropping it as the cask lands turns the fight he built into four seconds of him standing next to a team he can't kill.

Outside of that, she simply plays at a range he has no answer for. He has no way to reach a target that keeps stepping back except the dash, and once that's gone he's walking.

Dr. Mundo champion icon

Dr. Mundo Out-Lasts The Poke

This is the top lane answer. Gragas wins that matchup by chipping people down from outside their range, and Mundo regenerates faster than a barrel can chip. The poke phase stops being a phase.

His passive matters here too. Gragas leans on landing the first piece of crowd control to set up everything after it, and a champion who shrugs one off every few seconds is a bad target for a kit built out of setup.

Itemizing Against Gragas

His damage is magic, and the crowd control matters more than the damage does, so the shopping list points at both:

Mercury's TreadsKaenic RookernNegatron CloakControl Ward

Mercury's Treads is the first buy for anybody he keeps landing spells on, because the seconds you spend slowed and displaced are what actually kill you (the barrel itself rarely does). Kaenic Rookern is the full answer later (a spell shield on top of the magic resistance means his opener simply doesn't happen). A Negatron Cloak on its own is often enough to end the lane phase version of this matchup, and it costs very little. The Control Ward is here for the same reason it's in every guide to a champion who charges through walls: he needs the terrain to be a surprise, and vision takes that away.
