How to Beat Galio
Galio doesn't have to be in your lane to beat you in it. He mostly isn't.
The lane against him is quiet and a bit boring and then somebody on the other side of the map dies for reasons that have nothing to do with them. He's built to be hard to kill, hard to trade with and impossible to keep in one place, so the mistake people make is treating him as a lane opponent when he's really a map problem. He's worth respecting for that, and the solo queue tier list is the page to check for a sense of the company he keeps.
- A way to make his roam cost him something
- Damage that his shield doesn't reduce
- The patience to fight him when the ultimate is down

Galio Overview
Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous
- He turns any fight into a five on four. Hero's Entrance [R] covers thousands of units, so a skirmish he was never near becomes one he lands in the middle of, with a shield already on his team before he arrives.
- Trading with him is a bad idea by design. Shield of Durand [W] cuts the damage going into him (magic most of all) while it charges and taunts everything nearby when it lands, so the punish for hitting him is being held still next to him.
- Weirdly, he doesn't need gold. The kit works on resistances and cooldowns rather than on damage, so the version of him who lost lane is very close to the version who won it.
- He engages from further than he should. Justice Punch [E] is a long dash with a knock up on the end, and paired with the taunt it's a lot of crowd control for one champion to carry.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- His damage reduction is aimed at one damage type. Attack damage goes through the part of him that was built to survive mages (Shield of Durand [W] cuts physical damage by half as much as magic), and a lane opponent dealing physical damage is fighting a much softer champion.
- The ultimate is on a very long cooldown. Everything he did that felt unfair came out of one button, and for a long stretch after he uses it he's a slow tank in a lane.
- He's easy to keep honest with a wave. He wants to leave, and a champion who shoves the lane before he goes turns every roam into lost farm and a turret taking damage.
- The charge is visible and slow. His shield has to be held before it does anything, and the answer is often just to wait rather than to walk into it.
- He can't chase. Once the dash (Justice Punch [E]) is spent he has no way of catching a champion who has decided the fight is over.
Countering Galio
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Galio comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Deal physical damage. The single cleanest way to make his defensive kit stop mattering, and it changes the lane rather than shading it.
- Make the roam expensive. Push before he leaves. He can win a fight two lanes away and still come home behind if the wave is sitting on his turret when he gets back.
- Track the long cooldown. The window after his ultimate is the longest gap in any part of his kit, and most of the map plays are only available to him inside it.
- Don't attack into the charge. Waiting out Shield of Durand [W] costs you a couple of seconds. Trading into it costs you the trade and then a taunt.
If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Galio Matchup
Ping when he disappears rather than when he arrives. The information is worth more to the other lanes than anything you can do about it yourself.
Play the wave rather than the duel. You're unlikely to kill him anyway, and you don't need to. A lane where he is forced to farm is a lane where the rest of the map is even.
When the taunt lands, look at where you'll be standing when it ends. The damage is survivable; being pulled two steps into his team is what actually kills people.
Best Galio Counters
Bypass the shield, punish the map play, or refuse to be there when the taunt lands.

Talon His Shield Is Pointed The Wrong Way
Galio's defensive kit is built around cutting magic damage, and Talon simply doesn't deal any. What's left is a tank trying to survive an assassin with none of the tools that make him hard to kill.
The map half of the matchup goes the same way. Galio wants to leave lane and so does Talon, except Talon gets there faster and doesn't need his ultimate to do it.

Ziggs Punishes The Roam
His whole plan is to be somewhere else, and Ziggs is the champion who makes that decision expensive. Every trip Galio takes is farm he isn't getting and a turret losing health he can't get back.
He also pokes him out of the lane from a distance the dash doesn't cover, so the version of the matchup where Galio tries to stay home isn't comfortable either.

Fizz Not There When The Taunt Lands
Playful / Trickster [E] makes him untargetable for the moment the crowd control was going to arrive, and a taunt that hits nobody is the most expensive spell in Galio's kit going to waste.
After that it's an assassin against a tank with no escape, which is the shape of fight Fizz was built for and Galio was not.
Itemizing Against Galio
He's magic damage wrapped in resistances, so the buys have to answer both the damage and the fact that he's hard to kill:

Mercury's Treads is the first buy, because the taunt and the knock up (Shield of Durand [W] and Justice Punch [E]) are what turn a survivable amount of magic damage into a death. Kaenic Rookern is the later answer for whoever he keeps landing on, since a magic shield sitting on top of the magic resistance makes his arrival hurt a lot less than it looked like it would. Serylda's Grudge is there for a different problem entirely: he builds to be difficult to kill rather than to deal damage, and penetration is what stops the fight from becoming a stalemate you eventually lose to his team arriving. The Control Ward is for the lane he was about to visit, and it's usually the cheapest item on this list to get value from.
