Lee Sin Counters: Best Counter Picks and Tips

Lee Sin counter guide preview

Lee Sin's problem isn't that he outscales you. It's that he owns the first fifteen minutes of the map and you're just living in them.

Every lane that loses to a Lee Sin loses it the same way. He's there at level three, he's there again at four, and by the time your jungler answers, three plates are gone and the whole map is tilted. He does fall off, and the answer to him is built on that, but nobody wants to hear it while they're getting kicked into a tower.

Lee Sin's problem isn't that he outscales you. It's that he owns the first fifteen minutes of the map and you're just living in them.

Every lane that loses to a Lee Sin loses it the same way. He's there at level three, he's there again at four, and by the time your jungler has answered, three plates are gone and the map is tilted. He's been a permanent fixture near the top of the jungle section on our solo queue tier list for most of the game's history for exactly that reason. He does fall off, and every real answer to him is built on that fact, but nobody wants to hear it while they're being kicked into a tower.

What a Counter Needs
  • A jungler who genuinely wins the level 3 and level 4 fight, not one who survives it
  • Enough armor early that Sonic Wave into Resonating Strike stops being a kill threat
  • A reason for him to be somewhere else, since his damage is spent the moment he uses it

Lee Sin Overview

Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous

  • Sonic Wave / Resonating Strike [Q] reaches 1100 units and the follow-up dash scales with your missing health, so his execute range is far longer than the range he needs to stand at.
  • Safeguard / Iron Will [W] is a 7 second dash to any ally, minion, or ward, and the recast gives him omnivamp. A ward on the ground is a free escape route.
  • Flurry [Passive] returns energy and adds attack speed after every ability, which is why he never actually runs out of resources during a skirmish.
  • Dragon's Rage [R] kicks a target back into his team, and anyone they collide with gets knocked into the air as well.
  • Tempest / Cripple [E] reveals everything it hits, including anyone sitting in a brush, and then removes their move speed for the chase.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • Energy caps his burst. Once he's thrown Q, W and E in one fight, he has a dead window where he's a melee champion with basic attacks.
  • Resonating Strike needs the first hit. No Sonic Wave means no dash, and Sonic Wave is a slow linear skillshot that minions and monsters happily eat.
  • He falls off harder than almost anyone. His scaling is the weakest part of the kit, and every minute the game runs long is a minute he loses.
  • Safeguard needs a target. With no ward, ally, or minion nearby, he has no escape and no second approach.
  • His base defenses are thin. A jungler who genuinely wins the straight level 4 fight usually takes his whole tempo game away with it.

Countering Lee Sin

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Lee Sin comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Win the early duel outright. Lee Sin isn't trying to scale. If your jungler beats him at 3 and 4, the part of the game he was built for never happens.
  • Clear the ward, then fight. Safeguard turns any ward into an escape hatch. A sweeper before the skirmish is worth more than an extra item component.
  • Break the Q mark. Sonic Wave has a 3 second window for the follow-up dash. Anything that puts a wall, a body, or distance between you burns the entire ability.
  • Bait the energy. Take one exchange, back out, and take the second one 4 seconds later against a Lee Sin who has nothing left to press.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Lee Sin Matchup

Ward for the invade, not for the gank. Lee Sin's early advantage comes from arriving where you aren't ready, and river vision at 2:30 removes more of that than any item you buy.

Push the wave to your tower when you're low. Resonating Strike deals more damage the lower you are, so the health bar you'd normally play at is the wrong one in this matchup.

Buy early armor before you buy damage. Both halves of his combo are physical, and a single Cloth Armor changes the numbers on the all-in more than you'd expect.

Play for the 25 minute mark. It's not satisfying advice, but the game genuinely stops being his once everyone has three items, and surviving to that point is a legitimate win condition.

Best Lee Sin Counters

These three beat Lee Sin at three different points in the fight: at the start, in the middle, and at the moment he tries to leave.

Vi champion icon

Vi Matches His Tempo

Vi's whole kit is built for the same window Lee Sin lives in, and she does it more reliably. Denting Blows [W] breaks his armor and hands her attack speed on the same stacks, and Blast Shield [Passive] absorbs the front half of the Sonic Wave burst that he needs to land before anything else works.

Cease and Desist [R] is the part he can't answer. It's a targeted charge that follows him rather than a skillshot he can body-block, so the ward hop that saves him against everyone else does nothing here. Every extra second of that fight belongs to her, not him.

Briar champion icon

Briar Heals Through It

Crimson Curse [Passive] heals Briar off the bleed she applies, and that healing scales up as her health drops. Lee Sin's kill pattern depends on your health bar falling and staying down, and against Briar the falling part is exactly what turns the fight around.

Chilling Scream [E] is the specific answer to his burst. She takes reduced damage while charging it and heals a portion of her maximum health, then knocks him back and stuns him if he hits a wall. He spends his energy, she spends nothing, and Certain Death [R] means the chase afterward isn't optional for him.

Jarvan IV champion icon

Jarvan IV Traps the Playmaker

Cataclysm [R] builds terrain in a ring around the target, and Lee Sin's two escapes both need something outside that ring to work. Safeguard needs an ally, a minion, or a ward, and Resonating Strike needs a live Sonic Wave mark. Take both away and the most mobile jungler in the game is standing still.

The rest of the kit holds up in the early skirmishes he wants to start. Dragon Strike [Q] shreds armor and knocks up through the flag, Golden Aegis [W] shields and slows on a 9 second cooldown, and Martial Cadence [Passive] adds a chunk of current health damage to the very first hit of every exchange.

Itemizing Against Lee Sin

Lee Sin is entirely physical damage delivered in one short burst. The goal is to make that burst not enough rather than to survive a long fight with him:

Plated Steelcaps Frozen Heart Death's Dance Guardian Angel

Plated Steelcaps is the earliest and best answer, since Flurry [Passive]'s empowered attacks are a real part of his damage. Frozen Heart cuts the attack speed those attacks rely on. Death's Dance is the sleeper pick here, because spreading his burst out over several seconds is functionally the same as surviving it, and Guardian Angel makes a successful Dragon's Rage [R] on you a bad trade for his whole team.
