    Instructions and Caveats

    • Champions in BOLD I will talk about shortly
    • Champions UNDERLINED may be over/undervalued, but aren't/haven't played enough for me to make a better judgment.
    • Within each tier, the champions are strongest from left to right, but within a tier, each champion's strength is relatively close. This is especially true for Tiers 2 and 3 where these champions are ALL highly playable and player dependent on how strong they are in-game.
    • Win Rates are important in analyzing each champion's strength but are not the end-all criteria for any champion's position.
    • Professional Picks may not necessarily translate into good picks for the solo queue ladder, the two have slightly different meta-games and skill levels.
    • The creator of this list is diamond so there may be some personal bias towards higher tier play on certain champions.

League of Legends Tier List Descriptions

God Tier: These champions are almost impossible to keep down. If your team doesn't make it a priority to shut down these champions and shut them down hard, even if they lose their lane, lose in CS, and it's their first time playing the champion, they can be a massive nuisance for your team. On the other hand, if they're actually good at the champion...that's when it's time to throw in the towel.

Tier 1: These champions generally do very well regardless, and have some sort of advantage over most other champions. When they do well, their team does well. Even when they don't do well, their team still has a good chance of a comeback victory by utilizing one or more aspects of their late-game utility.

Tier 2: This is the Tier of balanced champions where Riot shoots to place their designs. These champions generally do well in their own right and are very strong picks with a good chance of winning. However, they're not overpowered by any means and do have their weaknesses.

Tier 3: These champions can still do very well, but tend to need a little more snowballing to get rolling. Even if they get an early lead, it's still very possible to turn the tides on them with just a mistake or two. They may also have some weaknesses that can be capitalized on.

Tier 4: These champions are either underpowered or offer less reward than other champions for the same amount of effort. These champions basically start winning from the get-go or get made fun of for the rest of the game. They need gold to do their job correctly, and if they don't get enough of it, they become sandbags for the enemy team to punch. Chances of a comeback with one of these champions feeding on your team is almost none.

    Thoughts on Win Rates

With enough playtime, a high win rate on a champion indicates *something* generally goes right, and a low win rate indicates that whatever is happening in games with this champion isn't in their favor.

A low win rate may mean a champion is being played incorrectly and is stronger than his win rate indicates, but a top 25 win rate (with 120 champions) almost always indicates that a champion is at least a good candidate for Tier 1 or high Tier 2 if the sample size is large enough.

This means that champions with high win rates do not mean that they're necessarily GOOD right now, especially if they have a low play rate or tend to get into favorable match-ups. If we feel this is the case, these champions will place differently on this tier list than you'd think.

Similarly, champions with low win rates that are still within the acceptable deviations may end up slightly higher than you'd expect from a champion with mediocre win rates.

If there are champions on this tier list with low overall play rates but good win rates after relatively few games of practice, it may mean that players that pick those champions up just to try them are bringing down the average. If this is the case, we will place them higher on the list.

More thoughts on win rates here.

    Counter Picking Champions

In Tier 3 of this tier list, we've placed certain champions that are good as a second pick, but can get spanked hard if they end up first picking by a variety of meta champions. If you're good at a large variety of champions, picking a champion that counters your lane is a good place to start. If you can get a slight advantage and don't have a clear experience advantage, picking a champion that both places high on this tier list and also counters your enemy lane may give you enough to win a game.

    LoL Tier List Champion Explanations

    Amumu [Tier 3 Jungle]

Amumu's power is greatly reduced now as a result of the new tendency of enemy junglers to invade this patch. As a relatively weak early game jungle champion, poor Amumu is more prone than ever to getting bullied. Unfortunately, the new jungle changes also allow jungle champions to snowball very hard off of early leads and experience quickly compounds. This makes it difficult for weak early game jungle champions to get off the ground and stay relevant.

    Cassiopeia [Tier 1 Mid]

Cassiopeia is a primary beneficiary to the new Conqueror rune. It's incredibly good on her and synergizes perfectly with her low cooldown, sustained damage kit to stay fully stacked during team fights. It also provides some much needed healing power, something that is highly beneficial for a champion that prefers getting up close and personal. As an early game lane bully she also allows her jungle to successfully invade, aided by her ability to easily gain priority in lane.

    Garen [God Tier Top]

After his initial post-rework nerfs, Garen landed in a decent spot. However, now with the new Conqueror changes he's even stronger than before. To make matters worse, the map now has so many additional nooks and crannies to flank from that avoiding him is exponentially harder than before.

    Heimerdinger [Tier 1 Mid/Bot]

Heimerdinger post buffs a few patches ago start getting better, but wasn't quite there in terms of power level. However, with the new preseason changes he's significantly better in the current meta. His turrets allow him to gain priority very quickly early game, giving your jungle free reign to invade for free. In an era of all-in champions he's also quite good as an anti-engage.

    Jax [Tier 2 Top]

The removal of Spear of Shojin hurt him quite a bit. His early to mid game was always about average with his late game power spikes being the strongest in the game. However, by removing a core item Jax has been left at a fairly balanced state during all levels of the game instead of operating as a ticking time bomb.

    Lee Sin [Tier 1 Jungle]

Lee Sin's still one of those champions where even a good player has to find narrow windows to make plays late game to stay effective unless he snowballs early. However, as an early game jungle the new changes benefit him greatly. As a champion that's not contingent on resource management, he can continuously farm and gank non-stop, starving the enemy jungle. Previously this wasn't quite as effective. However, the jungle EXP changes allow him to retain his lead with more authority.

    Malphite [Tier 3 Jungle]

Malphite jungle started rising last patch with the value of low mobility snowballing marksmen in the meta. However, this preseason is largely dominated by junglers and Conqueror-abusing laners. This means that the ability to one-shot a specific target isn't as valuable as it was previously. Normally this alone wouldn't be enough to drop him down. The main reason for his decline however, lies again in the jungle changes. As a jungler who really doesn't do anything until level six other than a minor slow, he's prone to heavy abuse.

    Miss Fortune [God Tier Marksman]

Surprisingly, the removal of Klepto really doesn't do anything particularly damaging to Miss Fortune. In fact, the updated Conqueror may be superior as a compliment to her high healing potential from stacking Doran Blades and Bloodline.

    Mordekaiser [God Tier Top]

Mordekaiser is simply another one of those new beneficiaries of Conqueror. He was already very difficult to kill or trade with before and the addition of the new rune change just makes him that much more imposing. His ultimate remains one of the strongest utility spells in the game and until he's nerfed to the point where he consistently loses lane he'll be quite good.

    Olaf [God Tier Jungle]

We talked about it a good amount above, but since Olaf is all the way down here alphabetically I'll be brief. Olaf is by far the strongest 1v1 jungle champion early game and literally nobody can duel with him levels 1 to 3 in melee range. When you couple this with the new Nimbus Cloak for mid-game dominance, Olaf snowballs harder than any other jungle champion in the game.

    Senna [Tier 1 Marksman]

Generally Senna is picked as a support rather than a marksman. However, don't sleep on her as a carry either. Although she's more utility than damage, she still deals plenty and can quickly rack up a kill count. The main issue isn't that she's better as a markman than a support, but that there are more supports that are better than her than marksmen that are better than her. That being said, she's quite strong and picked up quite often. I don't think she's drastically overpowered, but did put her as a good champion ban simply because she frequently does well and is picked often enough that a ban on her would generally make a higher impact.
