Release Vayne

Season 1 · Nerfed Patch V1.0.0.118b

She launched on a Tuesday. Riot hotfixed her the same day and took a chunk out of her stat line two weeks later.

Release Vayne's damage read your health bar instead of her own build, which meant every instinct the playerbase had about how to survive a marksman was exactly backwards.

In May 2011 the answer to a fed carry was armor. You bought a Thornmail, you bought a Randuin's, you put a tank in front of them, and the numbers on their auto attacks got smaller. That was the deal the game made with you. Then Vayne showed up and her third shot ignored all of it, scaled off how much health you'd bought to survive her, and hit you as true damage. The tankier you got, the faster you died. Nobody knew what to build. There wasn't anything to build.

When, And For How Long

Vayne released on May 10, 2011, in Patch V1.0.0.118. Riot hotfixed her inside the same patch cycle for a bug where Silver Bolts [W] could trigger endless Guardian Angel revivals, which is the kind of interaction that tells you an ability is doing something the rest of the game wasn't designed for.

Her fall is different from every other entry in this series, because she never got one. There's no rework, no relaunch, no visual and gameplay update that ended her era. Riot just kept taking pieces off her, starting fourteen days after she launched, and the champion she's today is the result of fifteen years of that. Patch V1.0.0.118b on May 24, 2011 was the emergency response. Patch V1.0.0.120 in June and Patch V1.0.0.132 the following January finished the job.

The Old Kit

The icons below are the archived art from the original version. The abilities are structurally the same ones she has now, which is the point: Vayne's problem was never her design, it was that every number attached to it started too high.

Old Vayne Night Hunter icon

Passive: Night Hunter

Bonus movement speed while moving toward a nearby enemy champion. Night Hunter [Passive] launched at 40 movement speed and got cut to 30 in January 2012. On its own it's a small thing. Its real job was as a multiplier for her ultimate, which tripled and then quadrupled it.

Old Vayne Tumble icon

Q: Tumble

A short roll that empowered her next attack. Tumble [Q] shipped with a bonus damage range starting at 55% of her attack damage and topping out at 75% at rank five. Riot cut that to a 40% to 60% band six weeks later, then to 30% to 50% in January, so within eight months the ability was doing about two thirds of what it launched with. It also got more expensive on mana in the first nerf patch, which tells you how freely she was throwing it out.

Old Vayne Silver Bolts icon

W: Silver Bolts

The reason she's in this series. Every third consecutive attack or ability on the same target dealt bonus true damage: a flat amount, plus a percentage of that target's maximum health. Silver Bolts [W] carried both halves at once in this version, so it hit squishy targets hard on the flat component and hit tanks hard on the percentage one. And it was true damage, so no defensive stat in the game reduced it by a single point. The flat portion didn't get removed until Patch 5.22, years later.

Old Vayne Condemn icon

E: Condemn

A crossbow bolt that knocked the target backward and stunned them if they hit terrain. Condemn [E] launched with meaningfully higher base damage than it has today and got trimmed in both of her first two nerf patches. What it really provided was a self-peel that also happened to be a stun, an interrupt, and, near almost any wall on the map, an opening for a kill.

Old Vayne Final Hour icon

R: Final Hour

Bonus attack damage, hugely amplified Night Hunter [Passive] movement speed, and stealth on every Tumble [Q]. All three of those started higher than they are now. The bonus attack damage launched at 35/55/75 and was cut to 25/40/55 within six weeks. The movement speed amplification launched at 400% and dropped to 300% in the same patch. And the stealth window on each Tumble [Q] lasted a second and a half before Riot shaved it to one second in January 2012.

Why It Was OP

Vayne wasn't unfair because she did a lot of damage. She was unfair because her damage didn't interact with the systems the game used to keep marksmen in check.

True damage that scales off the target's health bar has no counter-item. Armor and magic resist both did nothing. Building health, the other standard answer, actively made it worse, because Silver Bolts [W] read maximum health directly. The only real mitigation available wasn't being hit three times, and she had a roll, a knockback and a movement speed passive specifically to make sure you couldn't manage that.

She stealthed on a basic ability cooldown. Final Hour [R] didn't grant stealth as a one-off. It turned Tumble [Q], a low-cooldown mobility spell she was already spamming for damage, into a repeatable disappearing act. Chasing a Vayne with her ultimate up meant losing sight of her every couple of seconds while she kept shooting you.

Condemn [E] did four jobs. It was her escape, her peel, her interrupt and, against anyone standing within a few hundred units of terrain, an execute setup with a stun attached. Most marksmen of the era got one defensive tool. Vayne's doubled as an offensive one, and the map is mostly walls.

She didn't need a team. Everything above works in a 1v1 exactly as well as it does in a teamfight. A Vayne who fell behind could still duel her way back, and a Vayne who got ahead could take the game by herself. That's a very different risk profile from every other marksman on the roster at the time.

Fourteen Days

It's worth sitting with the timeline, because it's genuinely unusual even by 2011 standards.

She launched on May 10. Riot hotfixed a Silver Bolts [W] bug the same day. On May 24, Patch V1.0.0.118b arrived and reduced her attack range, her base movement speed, the base damage on Silver Bolts [W], the base damage on Condemn [E], and raised the mana cost of Tumble [Q]. That's five separate cuts, across her stat line and three of her four abilities, two weeks into her life.

It didn't work. On June 22, Patch V1.0.0.120 cut Tumble [Q]'s damage again, cut Condemn [E]'s damage again, and reduced both of Final Hour [R]'s biggest numbers. That didn't fully work either. On January 17, 2012, Patch V1.0.0.132 came back for her base movement speed, Night Hunter [Passive], Tumble [Q] one more time, and the stealth duration on Final Hour [R].

Four rounds of nerfs in eight months, and at no point did anyone at Riot touch Silver Bolts [W]'s percentage. The mechanic itself was clearly considered worth keeping. Everything around it had to shrink to make room for it.

Where She Stands Now

Vayne is still here, still doing the same thing, and still the champion people build health against and regret it. Silver Bolts [W] is still percentage-of-maximum-health true damage on the third hit. Condemn [E] still stuns against walls, and now deals extra damage when it does. Final Hour [R] still grants invisibility on Tumble [Q].

What changed is that the champion now demands something from the player. The flat damage on Silver Bolts [W] got replaced with a minimum value rather than a bonus. Her stat line, her range, her movement speed and her ultimate's bonuses all sit far below where they launched. She has one of the highest skill floors of any marksman in the game and a genuinely punishing early laning phase, and the payoff for clearing both is a late game where she erases anyone who bought the wrong item. That's a fair trade. In May 2011 there was no trade, because there was no wrong item. There was only Vayne.

Nominate The Next One

Vayne is the only entry in this series so far that never got reworked, never got relaunched, and never really stopped being scary. She just got shaved down for fifteen years until the rest of the game caught up with her. Look through the rest of the run below and drop your pick for the next one in the comments.
