As bruisers shuffle up in the current patch with the latest Fiora buffs and assassins start poking their heads back onto the rift, expect the rock-paper-scissors game to continue as the tank buffs from last patch start to shine.

Meanwhile, the bot-lane meta is largely back to normal with even late-leavers like Yasuo and Swain dwindling in popularity as a result of the massive crit damage that late-game marksmen can deal.

Instructions and Caveats:

  • Champions in BOLD I will talk about shortly
  • Champions UNDERLINED may be over/undervalued, but aren't/haven't played enough for me to make a better judgment.
  • Within each tier, the champions are strongest from left to right, but within a tier each champion's strength is relatively close. This is especially true for Tiers 2 and 3 where these champions are ALL highly playable and player dependent on how strong they are in-game.
  • Win Rates are important in analyzing each champion's strength but are not the end-all criteria for any champion's position.
  • Professional Picks may not necessarily translate into good picks for solo queue ladder, the two have slightly different meta-games and skill levels.
  • The creator of this list is diamond so there may be some personal bias towards higher tier play on certain champions.

Champion Explanations

  • Ahri [God Tier Mid] - The staple of mid-laner cores, Ahri's always viable due to her insane mobility. However, after nerfs on multiple assassins, her damage is now on par with some of the best. This allows her to not only be the evasive foxy lady we all know and love but also double as a massive burst damage dealer on top.
  • Fiora [Tier 1 Top] - Fiora's mid-game buffs have given her new life. Her damage late game as a hyper-carry was always fine, but now mid-game she's able to compete with the likes of Irelia and Darius.
  • Garen [God Tier Top] - Garen's nerfs definitely put a small dent in his lane-based harass pattern and early trades. However, they don't change the fact that his damage is incredibly high and consistent. When combined with his silence, it's very difficult to trade with him in any capacity.
  • Jax [God Tier Jungle] - When you fill top lane with a massive set of auto-attack based champions like Irelia and Fiora, picking up Jax is a no-brainer. Even if you first pick him, changes are the enemy lane is still going to be filled with auto-attackers in solo queue. Meanwhile, his late-game hyper-carry ability is still one of the best in the game.
  • Kassadin [God Tier Mid] - Another champion that got a huge mid-game spike this game, Kassadin's newly reduced cooldown on his ultimate gives him powerful map-dominance and the ability chase down enemies at will.
  • Nunu [Tier 3 Jungle] - Nunu's kit looks decent on paper, but in practice actually landing his knock-up ends up more challenging than it appears. As a result, he's somewhat lacking at the moment, but time will tell if players manage to figure out a more consistent way to land it.
  • Rammus [Tier 1 Jungle] - Similar to Jax, Rammus in the current meta is a no-brainer. Even if the enemy doesn't pick up a large set of AD-based champions, Rammus still packs quite a punch during his point-and click-CC and powerful gank pattern.
  • Sion [Tier 1 Top] - Sion's been a bit of a sleeper pick for a while now. His damage isn't insanely powerful as tanks go, so with the current bruiser meta he's had trouble staying relevant later in the game. However, keep a close eye on him going forward with assassins coming back into the fold.
  • Yorick [Tier 1 Top] - The change on Yorick may be more of a nerf than a buff, but that's largely in part of his great success in the current meta. While enemy laners are becoming squishier and mid-game powerhouses are dominant, Yorick's split-push tactics and abusive laning phase prevent hypercarries like Irelia and Fiora from running over enemy teams the way they'd like to.
