TheOddOne Calls Xerath OP

In a recent interview with TheOddOne, he explained how he believes Xerath is borderline OP right now as a result of the way magic pen works with his percentage based magic pen. You may have noticed on my solo queue list that I've placed him in Tier 3, the "playable-but-needs-to-snowball" tier.

"What kind of tier name is that?"

Personally I hardly ever see Xerath, but when I do they're very good - In terms of statistics, he's only sporting a 48% win rate in solo queue at the moment.

I think that Xerath is indeed very strong, but it takes a strong front line for him to be effective, especially since he technically only has one CC and his "escape" roots him in place. In the next tier list update, I will in fact be moving him up a notch, but I don't think he's anywhere near the "borderline OP" TheOddOne calls it in his interview (watch me eat my words soon!)

  1. There's a fairly recent match on eslasia's twitch VODs. It really showcases Xerath's ability to burst quite well, to give an idea, the Xerath was eventually indiscriminately melt either the carry or the Warmog's+Sunfire+Negatron Cloak Singed. He's not the most solo-queue compatible admittedly, but he's definitely had some successful candidates in high elo (iKarry, Chauster, batjewman, among others).

  2. As you said he needs a frontline, and if he gets that he is borderline OP but then again, how many times in soloQ will you get that ? great for teams who focus on protecting him, not so great for soloQ
I agree with the tier3 placing.

  3. Might be powerful in a team composition, but definitely not for yoloQ.

  4. He is indeed a good caster for mid lane, provided you have a team who likes to cooperate, but it's common knowledge that in Solo Q, especially low elo (below gold) the faceroll burst champs shine, and Xerath requires a little more skill than bashing a few buttons, that's why he's underplayed

That's a good point Alexander, a lot of people seem to like going squishy top lanes too, which leaves Xerath pretty open in teamfights.

I think I've played against Batjewman's smurf...Xerath is one scary mofo.

I guess it also really depends on the player. Just like Poppy, Xerath's good in the right hands, but there may not be many hands that are right.

That's true Greg, he has the potential to do almost no damage if you miss everything, which I guess plays into the consistency factor of solo queue!
