Instructions and Caveats:

  • Champions in BOLD I will talk about shortly
  • Champions UNDERLINED may be over/undervalued, but aren't/haven't played enough for me to make a better judgment.
  • Within each tier, the champions are strongest from left to right, but within a tier each champion's strength is relatively close. This is especially true for Tiers 2 and 3 where these champions are ALL highly playable and player dependent on how strong they are in-game.
  • Win Rates are important in analyzing each champion's strength but are not the end-all criteria for any champion's position.
  • Professional Picks may not necessarily translate into good picks for solo queue ladder, the two have slightly different meta-games and skill levels.
  • The creator of this list is diamond, so there may be some personal bias towards higher tier play on certain champions.

Champion Explanations

  • Camille [Tier 1 Top] - Camille is the latest top lane poster girl of top lane, and for good reason. She can abuse the majority of top laners with ease, and tends to snowball through her lane and the game very hard. Howevr, with Alistar and Vayne so high in the meta right now, her effectiveness is reduced by quite a bit during team fights. However, once Vayne either gets nerfed or the relic shield meta changes, be on the lookout for her to absolutely explode into a must pick/ban.
  • Evelynn [God Tier Jungle] - Evelynn's been on a bit of a tear lately with small bug fixes in succession to make her quite good now. The changing meta also favors her assassination-style play. By picking her, you immediate create pressure on the map for enemy laners, which is quite good in a solo queue setting.
  • Gangplank [Tier 1 Top] - Top laners generally need to exert some kind of global pressure and prevent themselves from feeding as a result of the bot-lane focused meta now. If he can survive the initial jungle gank and keep himself from pushing lane too hard, Kleptomancy allows him to eventually outfarm his enemy laner with relatively low risk to himself. Meanwhile, his ultimate allows him to assist bot lane twice as much without actually needing to go there himself.
  • Janna [God Tier Support] - An excellent counter to Alistar and Leona and the perfect peel support for hypercarries, the meta has spun around to be Janna-friendly again. While traditional sustain-based supports like Sona and Soraka are getting the short end of the stick with all-in champions all over the board, Janna doesn't suffer from the same weaknesses.
  • Nami [God Tier Support] - Nami and I have always had a bit of a love-hate relationship. I hate it when players throw random "zoning" bubbles, but honestly she's quite good in lane. Her poke and heal is fairly easy to land a double, and landing a triple almost guarantees a lane win.
  • Nasus [Dog Tier Top] - The top dog of the land may be experiencing some trouble in Patch 8.2 after the removal of sightstone and support item rework. However, in his current state, his Kleptomancy + Tailsman of Ascension build gives him basically everything he needs to snowball through a game with ease. Of course you'll want to watch out for certain trouble champions like Teemo, but otherwise he really has no bad match-ups.
  • Orianna [God Tier Mid] - Tryhard season is ramping up, and Orianna's always been a great candidate for snowballing through the season. Never considered "broken", she's rarely banned, but if you practice her you gain the ability to annihilate entire teams all by yourself. Her laning phase is also very safe, and I think she's a great pick to learn and play through the year.
  • Ornn [Tier 1 Top] - A lot of people are really stuck on Ornn being super powerful. However, ever since his nerf he's been relatively in line with the rest of the top laners. It's true that his engagement potential is great, but learning to play him well does take a bit of time.
  • Riven [Tier 1 Top] - I've left Riven in Tier 1 even though she's particularly difficult to learn and play. The reason for this is that her combos don't need full mastery, and one or two can still carry you through games in most divisions with ease.
  • Taric [God Tier Support] - Taric's one of the few "all-in" supports that remain in God Tier since the hyper-carry meta, mostly because of his peel capabilities and ultimate. His ultimate allows your hyper-carries to really pop-off late game, and results in relatively little peel needed after the initial ult settles into place.
  • Udyr [Tier 3 Top] - Some people might be seeing more Udyr tops lately. It's honestly not that good, but you could pick it into certain team comps and melee top lane match-ups successfully. Without enough hard CC and burst damage, Udyr can easily get out of control and snowball through teams.
  • Vayne [God Tier Marksman] - This hypercarry's prime weakness has always been laning phase. Post-6, her ability to pop off and 1v1 any champion in the game is legendary. With the new relic shield meta, and the return of peel supports, she's back in the game and better than ever before. Killing her pre-6 is very difficult even with jungle assistance as a result of the bonus shields and sustain, and after 6 she'll start showing you who the real hunter is supposed to be.
