LoL item shop guide preview

You open the shop about twenty times a game and most people use maybe a third of it. Here's what the interface already does for you, including the button that takes a misclick back for free.

The Item Shop

Client Guide

You open the shop about twenty times a game and most people use maybe a third of it.

It's the interface you touch more than any other, it has quietly grown features for a decade, and nothing in the client ever mentions them. Everything below takes one game to get used to and then saves you time and gold in every game after that.

Reading and buying don't have to be the same trip

The shop opens wherever you are, on P by default. Buying and selling only work near the stall, and the gold counter on your HUD lights up when you're actually in range.

So the deciding can happen during a dead minute in lane, and the four seconds you spend standing on the platform can be spent clicking rather than reading.

Type a stat and you get everything granting it. Type an effect and you get everything that does it. The search runs across names, descriptions and listed stats at once, which is the fastest way to answer the question you actually have.

That question is almost never "where is this item". It's "what in here gives me the thing I'm currently losing to", and the search is built for the second one.

Items also carry search keywords, so the shorthand the community says out loud finds the item. English names and keywords work on every client language the game ships in, which is worth knowing if yours isn't in English.

The filters stack

Every stat and effect down the left edge is a toggle, and picking more than one narrows the grid to items that satisfy all of them. There's a Clear Filters button up top for when you've boxed yourself in, and the class filters across the top do the same job more coarsely.

Two clicks answers questions that are otherwise genuinely awkward, like which items give both of the two things you need right now.

Two things worth setting up once

Pin the side panels

The three panels on the left hold consumables, boots and your inventory, and by default they collapse until you hover them. Each has a pin button, and the setting survives between games.

If you've ever bought the wrong potion because a panel moved under your cursor, that's the fix.

Build your own tab

Item sets are made outside the game and appear as a third tab for the champion and map you built them for, with as many categories as you like in whatever order you think about them.

It turns navigating a shop into reading a list you wrote. If you play two or three champions seriously it's the biggest time saving in the interface.

Infinity Edge item icon

Buying under pressure

Right-click or double-left-click an item icon and it buys immediately, exactly as the big purchase button would, without the trip across the window. It behaves sensibly on items you can't afford yet rather than doing nothing.

When you can't afford the finished item but can afford part of it, that button becomes Purchase Components and buys what your gold covers, taking the most expensive piece it can first. The ordering is the valuable half: buying the expensive component first is almost always right, and it's the thing people get wrong by hand with four seconds left.

There's also a progress ring nobody uses. Queue an item and the shop icon on your HUD becomes that item wrapped in a ring that fills as you buy components and earn gold, turning bright yellow when you can afford to combine it. Right-clicking the icon drops the queued item, left-clicking jumps to its recipe. The "can I go back yet" question stops being mental arithmetic and becomes a glance.

Refillable Potion item icon

Undo is free and unlimited

Bought the wrong thing? Undo takes it back at no cost, refunds in full, and keeps going backward through your purchases as many times as you press it. It reverses sales the same way.

The catch is how easily it switches off.

Undo worksUndo is gone
You're still in range of the shop, standing on the platform, having taken and dealt no damageYou leave the shop's range, enter combat, use or consume the item, it transforms, an item gets handed to you, or you start channeling Shen's ultimate or the top lane quest's Unleashed Teleport

If you're Teemo or Shaco also beware that enemies walking into your trap will cancel your undo button.

Frequently asked questions

Can you undo a purchase in League of Legends?

Yes, for free and as many times as you like, as long as you haven't left the shop range, taken or dealt damage, or used the item.

Can you open the shop away from base?

You can open and read it anywhere. Buying and selling need you near the stall, and the HUD gold counter lights up when you're in range.

How do you search for items by effect?

Just type the effect. The search covers item descriptions and stats as well as names, and it understands community nicknames.

What is the ring around the shop button?

Your queued item's progress. It fills as you gather gold and components, and turns yellow when the item is affordable.

Do item sets still exist?

Yes. They're built outside the game and show up as their own tab in the shop for the champion and map they were made for.

The short version

Pin the panels, learn the right-click, and check your items before you leave the fountain. None of it makes you better the way practice does. It just stops the twenty seconds a game you spend in a menu from costing you anything.

For deciding what to spend it on, our gold guide covers where the money comes from, and our underrated items list is a good place to find something you haven't tried.
