When a swept ward gets killed by an ally, you both get paid. An enormous number of players in every division do not know this and are actively annoyed when it happens.

Double Ward Gold

Here is a small piece of free gold that a startling number of players do not know exists.

When someone reveals an enemy ward with a Sweeping Lens or a control ward, and an ally then kills that ward, both players receive gold and bonus experience. Not one of them. Both.

Which is why the question mark pings are misplaced. Play a marksman for long enough and you will get pinged by a support for last hitting a ward they just swept, on the assumption that you stole something from them. You didn't. They got paid too, and the ward needed killing regardless.

What This Means in Practice

Kill the revealed ward

If your support sweeps and a ward lights up, hit it. It is free gold for you, free gold for them, and it denies vision either way.

Sweep even when busy

Supports sometimes skip sweeping because they cannot spare the time to kill what they find. You don't have to. Reveal it and let someone else finish the job.

Stop pinging your ADC

They are not stealing. This is the single most common misunderstanding of the mechanic and it causes real friction in games for no reason.

It stacks with the job

Vision denial is already worth doing. Getting paid twice for it is the reason to do it more often rather than less.

Why Nobody Knows

The game never tells you. The gold appears, but it appears the way all small amounts of gold appear, and nothing connects it to the ward that was just revealed. It is a mechanic that only becomes visible if somebody points it out, which is most of the reason this post exists.

For any term used here, the League of Legends Terms Glossary covers it.
