SEASON 8 - PATCH 8.18

FASTEST RANKED LP GAIN TIER LIST

"What Are the Best Champions to Climb With"

For the latest Solo Queue Tier list update for Patch 8.18 we're trying something new this week! Some of you mentioned that because of the patch cycles once every two weeks and our list coming out the week after the patch hits, you're really not getting a bang for your buck.

To fix this, we're going to start dishing out tier lists closer to the patch note release with some initial predictions, then update as the week progresses. This way, you'll get twice as long to use each list for each patch.

Enjoy!

Current Patch Highlights

Renekton and Vayne buffs made it through, which should result in a significant bump. Renekton's Slice and Dice change isn't quite as big as it looks on paper, but Vayne's buff should really allow her to tangle with support poke early on.

The purpose of this list is to pick out the champions that when played, will allow you to climb divisions the fastest by winning more games. This list contains more off-meta and counter-meta placements that do well against popular picks.

Instructions and Caveats:

  • Champions in BOLD I will talk about shortly
  • Champions UNDERLINED may be over/undervalued, but aren't/haven't played enough for me to make a better judgment.
  • Within each tier, the champions are strongest from left to right, but within a tier each champion's strength is relatively close. This is especially true for Tiers 2 and 3 where these champions are ALL highly playable and player dependent on how strong they are in-game.
  • Win Rates are important in analyzing each champion's strength but are not the end-all criteria for any champion's position.
  • Professional Picks may not necessarily translate into good picks for solo queue ladder, the two have slightly different meta-games and skill levels.
  • The creator of this list is diamond so there may be some personal bias towards higher tier play on certain champions.

Champion Explanations

  • Aatrox [Tier 1 Top] - By increasing the numbers a bit for an already decent top laner, Aatrox is now what I would consider one of the stronger ones at this point. The buff on his movement speed almost guarantees that he can close the gap between him and his opponent with ease, and also means escaping is simple as long as he doesn't get hit during his ultimate speed boost.
  • Graves [God Tier Jungle] - Somehow, Graves escapes the nerf bat patch after patch. At some point you just have to assume it's Riot feeling guilty about stealing his cigar that leaves him in his current state. In any case, he's still incredibly strong right now, and dominates solo queue.
  • Irelia [God Tier Top] - Irelia's rising to the top now that players have learned to play and abuse her. Previously landing stuns were somewhat difficult, but after some practice it's clear that hitting multi-stuns isn't particularly difficult. Players with over 50 games are experiencing a solid return on investment with a clean 55% win rate.
  • Kassadin [God Tier Mid] - Kassadin has always been in a somewhat difficult spot to consider. He snowballs easily, but his kills are often solo kills that don't translate into a team advantage. However, in his current state he snowballs SO well that providing his team gold is no longer an issue since they can just take it themselves by free farming with dead enemy laners.
  • Leona [God Tier Support] - Moving Leona back up to God tier after a patch away from the top. After reconsidering her placement, she truly does provide an extraordinary amount of lane pressure and frontline potential. In the current meta, she allows her team to play ultra-aggressively, meaning champions like Irelia can truly shine.
  • Lucian [Tier 1 Bot] - After the latest round of buffs, Lucian is back in the crew and can easily compete with the God Tier marksman. But even though he can deal with them in lane, the rest have teamfight potential that's head and shoulders above Lucian's unless he can really push his advantage in lane.
  • Nunu [Tier 3 Jungle] - Nunu's another champion that's somewhat interesting. At higher divisions players love him and think he's terrifying to play against. On the other hand, his win rate is terrible and clearly most players aren't executing it as well in practice as they think they're doing in their head. If you're ahead he's incredibly easy to snowball (pun intended). However, if you fall behind he ends up very much like a gimmick champion.
  • Renekton [Tier 1 Top] - Renekton's latest buffs look incredible on paper, but as a matter of fact the armor reduction really only impacts the earlier levels when Renekton should really be maxing Q anyway. By the time players pick up some armor, Renekton generally has his E at around the same level as it evens out. Either way, it's a welcome buff and helps his laning phase quite a bit.
  • Trundle [Tier 2 Jungle] - Trundle's nerfs this time around are a sad result of how well he does in pro play. He's by no means bad in solo queue, but he just doesn't have the same impact. Post-nerfs, he does okay as a jungler, but he's nothing special unless the enemy team is very tanky.
  • Vayne [Tier 1 Bot] - Vayne's reduced cooldown at early levels is extraordinarily helpful for her to avoid poke levels 1~5. It really doesn't change her late game at all since players max her Q anyway, but with the new cooldown reduction she can really start avoiding annoying spells like Morgana's binding and Blitzcrank hooks to prevent a tragic early demise.
