When to Recall: Back Timings and Tempo in League of Legends

Recall timing guide preview

Everyone recalls a dozen times a game and almost nobody thinks about when. A good back costs you nothing and buys an item. A bad one hands over a wave, a plate, and your tempo. The difference is almost entirely timing.

When to Recall

Recalling is something every champion does over and over, in every game, from the bottom of the ladder to the world championship. Almost nobody thinks about it. You get low, you press B, you go shopping.

But backs aren't equal. A well-timed one costs you nothing and comes back with an item. A badly timed one donates a wave to your tower, gives up a plate, and lets your opponent return two hundred gold richer with a lane they can now push. Getting this right is one of the biggest free gains available to a laner.

The Golden Rule

Crash the wave, then back. Shove everything into the enemy tower and recall while the tower is busy killing it. You lose no minions, your opponent has to stay and collect them or lose them too, and the wave bounces back toward you at roughly the moment you walk out of the fountain. Nearly every good recall in League is a version of this.

The Problems, and What to Do

Recalling with the wave at your own tower

Your tower kills minions much faster than an enemy wave does, so every minion that arrives while you're away is gold you'll never see. Even if your jungler covers the lane, they're not jungling or ganking while they do it, so your team loses gold either way.

Instead: push the wave to your opponent's tower before you go, even if it costs most of your mana to do it. Mana regenerates in the fountain. Minions don't come back.

Your opponent crashed and backed first

Now you're the one stuck. They'll return with new items, out-push you, and make the next few minutes miserable while your wave sits under your tower dying on its own.

Instead: collect what you can from the tower as fast as possible and back immediately after. Trying to hold the lane at even health and worse items is how a small deficit becomes a large one.

Backing on a cannon wave

Cannon minions are worth far more than the rest and take much longer for a tower to kill, so leaving one to die under your own tower is the single most expensive back you can make.

Instead: either collect the cannon before you go, or crash the whole wave including it. Never walk away from a cannon walking toward your tower.

The bot lane split back

Bot lane is the only lane with two people in it, which means it has a problem the others don't: if one of you backs and the other stays, the one who stays is now in a 1v2.

Instead: back together after a crash, or have the support back alone while the marksman holds under tower. A support is far cheaper to have away from lane than a carry who loses farm the whole time.

Backing for no reason

Full health, full mana, 200 gold that buys nothing. That's not a reset, that's a walk. You lose the wave and gain an item component you could have had anyway thirty seconds later.

Instead: know what you're going back to buy before you press the button. If the gold in your pocket doesn't complete a component, ask whether the back is worth the wave.

Empowered Recalls

Two of these exist now and both change the calculation.

Baron. The Hand of Baron includes a much faster recall, which is a large part of why a team that takes Baron can convert it so quickly. You aren't just stronger, you're back on the map sooner.

The mid lane Role Quest. Completing it grants a short empowered recall on its own separate cooldown. Practically, that means a mid laner can reset far more cheaply than anyone else on the map, which is exactly what a roaming lane wants.

Both turn recalling from a cost into something closer to free, and if you have one available, backs you'd normally skip become worth taking.

Things Worth Knowing

Recall is cancellable

Moving, attacking or taking damage stops it. Starting one you don't intend to finish, in vision, is a real way to bait an opponent into committing to a fight they'd otherwise skip.

Back before an objective, not during

Being in the fountain when a dragon spawns is how teams end up fighting four against five. Look at the timers before you press the button, not after.

Recall in a bush when you can

An enemy who watches you back knows exactly how long you'll be gone and exactly what you're buying. Denying that information is free.

Teleport changes the math

With Teleport up you can back at almost any time and be back in lane instantly. Without it, every back costs you the full walk. Top laners in particular should be planning around this.

Recall timing is really wave management wearing a different hat, so if the crash-and-bounce language here is unfamiliar, the laning mechanics guide covers how waves move, and the Terms Glossary defines the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to recall in League of Legends?

Right after crashing a big wave into the enemy tower. The tower kills your minions while you shop, your opponent has to stay and collect or lose them, and the wave bounces back toward you as you return. You lose essentially nothing.

Why shouldn't I recall when the wave is at my tower?

Because your tower kills minions much faster than enemy minions do, so most of that wave dies without you getting the gold. Even if a teammate covers the lane, they're giving up their own farm to do it.

Should the support or the ADC back first in bot lane?

The support, if either has to go alone. A marksman left in a 1v2 loses farm continuously and risks dying, while a support away from lane costs comparatively little. Better still, crash the wave and back together.

What is an empowered recall?

A faster version of the normal recall. The Hand of Baron buff includes one, and the mid lane Role Quest grants one on its own cooldown when completed. Both make resetting much cheaper, so backs you'd normally skip become worthwhile.

Can you cancel a recall?

Yes. Moving, attacking or taking damage interrupts it. Starting a recall you don't intend to complete, where the enemy can see you, is a legitimate way to bait someone into committing.

Should I recall if I have Teleport?

Teleport makes backing far cheaper, since you can return to lane immediately rather than walking. It's why top laners with Teleport can take resets at times that would be terrible for anyone else, and why losing it changes how you should play the next few minutes.
