2018 Best Champions Tier List - Solo Queue Ranked Ladder Climbing - Patch 8.3 Update

Hi folks and welcome to the latest update on the solo queue tier list. Plenty of movement this patch as nerfs on Unsealed Spellbook shake up the core of the meta. Meanwhile, the majority of this patch's buffs didn't do much, but the Sejuani and Kog'Maw nerfs pushed jungle and bot lane in new directions.

Instructions and Caveats:

  • Champions in BOLD I will talk about shortly
  • Champions UNDERLINED may be over/undervalued, but aren't/haven't played enough for me to make a better judgment.
  • Within each tier, the champions are strongest from left to right, but within a tier each champion's strength is relatively close. This is especially true for Tiers 2 and 3 where these champions are ALL highly playable and player dependent on how strong they are in-game.
  • Win Rates are important in analyzing each champion's strength but are not the end-all criteria for any champion's position.
  • Professional Picks may not necessarily translate into good picks for solo queue ladder, the two have slightly different meta-games and skill levels.
  • The creator of this list is diamond, so there may be some personal bias towards higher tier play on certain champions.

Champion Explanations

  • Alistar [God Tier Support] - Alistar's role in the current meta adds much-needed initiation power to teams that are mostly running Gangplank/Riven top and Lee Sin/Kha'Zix jungle. He also works especially well against Janna and Nami after the sightstone changes since most ranged supports opt not to build an early Ruby Crystal, making them easy prey for all-ins.
  • Bard [Tier 1 Support] - Bard running Electrocute deals an absurd amount of damage. His laning phase can be awkward if he doesn't lane good stuns, but his empowered auto-attack trades are extremely good and can catch most people off guard. He also has a decent amount of lane sustain, and thus fits a somewhat traditional support role. However, he's certainly more of an offensive support and should be played as such.
  • Camille [God Tier Top] - Camille's rise to the top comes largely at the Unsealed Spellbook nerfs. She was already strong last patch, but the change in runes largely favored her since she almost never used Unsealed Spellbook while many of her top lane counterparts did. Her ability to isolate and beat almost anyone 1v1 is very powerful and allows her to snowball through games hard.
  • Kog'Maw [Tier 2 Marksman] - Post nerf Kog'Maw certainly isn't a bad late game champion, but he needs more to ramp up to the point where he used to be. I'd say he's in a fairly balanced state right now unless you're facing a scripter. If you are, then he's still pretty busted.
  • Sion [God Tier Top] - Sion's increase in power comes mostly as a result of bug-fixes in the last patch. He was already fairly good, but similar to Camille, the Unsealed Spellbook changes combined with the bug fixes have really brought him to a new level.
  • Skarner [Tier 1 Jungle] - After the Sejuani nerfs, Skarner's coming up as the newest high mobility tanky engage jungler with good early game ganks.
  • Taliyah [God Tier Mid] - Taliyah's one of those mages where players have finally practiced her enough and learned enough tips and tricks from each other to make her a truly abusive and obnoxious champion. Her kill potential from levels 1 through 3 is extremely high depending on the level of cheese applied, and her ability to roam throughout the map is similar, if not more effective than Twisted Fate since her wall can force a double flash from the enemy bot lane.
  • Twisted Fate [God Tier Mid] - Similar to Taliyah, Twisted Fate's roaming abilities are impressive and game-altering in solo queue. However, what Twisted Fate does better is stay on the map and gain a massive CS lead through lane priority and farming everything in sight. Minion Dematerializer allows him to full clear mid-lane extremely early, resulting in difficult to follow roaming potential.
  • Varus [God Tier Marksman] - Varus is one of those few marksmen who isn't reliant on proper use of mobility to be strong. Instead, landing his ultimate is the most difficult part of his kit and that happens to be fairly straight-forward. Ever since Vayne was nerfed last patch, he's had an easier time laning against the rest of the marksmen. The built-in heal reduction on his E is also very valuable in a meta dominated by Vladimir and a patch featuring Swain.
  • Veigar [Tier 1 Mid] - Trying to seige against a 40% CDR Veigar is nearly impossible. Similar to Anivia, his ability to clear out waves is incredible while simultaneously keeping his kill potential. Veigar also works very well when Zac is in meta since his Event Horizon [E] prevents Zac from engaging.
  • Warwick [God Tier Jungle] - Really saving the best for last here. Warwick in his current form is essentially the exact opposite of his pre-rework state. His early game is phenomenal, and his gank potential is through the roof. If you manage to snowball through mid-game, his late game also features an unkillable wolf that really only needs Titanic Hydra to deal insane burst damage. After Sejuani nerfs many players piled onto Skarner, but it's really Warwick that's the king of the jungle now.
