Kill gold builds a bounty seven times faster than farm gold, and while you're behind, farming builds one three times faster than usual.

Bounties
What You're WorthEvery champion is worth 300 gold until level 6, then 10 more per level, stopping at 420 (twelve levels of 10 gold). First Blood adds a flat 100 for the first kill of the game only.
So a level 18 champion who has done nothing all game is worth 420. Everything above that number is performance, and the rules turning performance into gold are stranger than most players assume.
Kill gold converts seven times faster than farm gold
Gold taken from kills and assists turns into bounty at one for every three earned. Gold from minions, monsters and support items converts at one for every twenty.
Snowballing off your opponent makes you a target quickly, and farming does it too, just slowly enough that most players never notice it happening to them.
There's one exemption, and it's generous. Shut down gold you collect while you're already ahead doesn't count toward your own worth at all. Executing the fed enemy carry is free money for the player who was winning anyway.
Behind, farming builds a bounty three times faster
That twenty-to-one farm rate only applies while you're neutral or ahead. In a negative state it's seven to one instead (nearly three times the usual rate).
That's the part that stings. A player recovering from a bad start climbs back toward being worth a shutdown considerably faster than the player who got ahead of them, and it happens without a single kill.
The first 100 gold is invisible
The first 100 gold of extra worth doesn't count toward anything. Only what accrues past your base value plus that buffer becomes shutdown gold, and only that gets announced and displayed.
The scoreboard rounds it to the nearest 50 and shows it to both teams, so a clean-looking scoreboard doesn't mean somebody is worth base. It means they're within 100 of it, which is a different and much more killable thing.
Assists pay half of whatever the kill was worth, split evenly between everyone who helped, and that half can't go above 50% of the dead champion's base value. Early on it's smaller still: assist bounties open the game at half of normal and climb back to full between 0:55 and 2:55 (a two-minute ramp).
One kill can't pay more than base plus 700
Past that point the champion enters an extended bounty state and a single kill pays the maximum (1,120 gold at level 18, base 420 plus 700), so nobody ever collects the whole pile at once.
The leftover isn't discarded. It's re-applied to that champion afterward, which is why a genuinely fed player stays worth a shutdown through two or three deaths rather than resetting to base on the first one.
In a close game, that shutdown gold isn't actually there
From 6:00 onward the game switches shut down gold off for any team that isn't convincingly winning, and it decides that by reading gold, experience and objectives together, with team gold weighted heaviest. The closer the game sits to even, the more of the bounty it removes, up to all of it.
So the fed enemy you've been dreading is often worth base and nothing more. The bounty keeps building quietly the whole time it's suppressed, and the moment your team breaks the deadlock and takes a real lead, every gold of it is handed back.
Objective bounties do the blunt version of the same thing. While those are live, the losing team's shut down gold is suppressed outright.
One last piece of timing. On Summoner's Rift, changes to your worth wait until five seconds after you leave combat with enemy champions, so a kill you die for straight afterward never moves your bounty at all. The Howling Abyss, for some reason, updates immediately instead, which is why a multi-kill there still pays out even when you die a second later.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a champion worth by default?
300 gold until level 6, rising by 10 a level to a maximum of 420.
Do you get a bounty from farming?
Yes, at one gold of bounty per twenty earned, or per seven while you're behind.
Why does the scoreboard show no bounty on a fed player?
The first 100 gold of extra worth is buffered and never displayed.
Can you collect an entire bounty in one kill?
No. A single kill is capped at base plus 700, and the remainder is re-applied to that champion.
Why is the enemy carry's bounty gone in a close game?
After 6:00 the game suppresses shut down gold for any team that isn't convincingly ahead. It comes back in full once your team takes a real lead.
Does First Blood affect bounties?
It adds a flat 100 gold for the game's first kill and nothing after that.
The short version
Being fed is a debt as much as a lead, and being behind isn't the safe state it feels like. Check the scoreboard numbers before a fight, and remember that a clean board still hides up to 100 gold per player.
