Top lane is the only lane where being ranged is a cheat code, and the most popular mid laner in the game somehow keeps forgetting she's allowed to go there.
Nobody bans Ahri because of what she does to a top laner. She lands in the top lane the same way every ranged pick does: the enemy locked a melee champion with no way to close the gap, and now they have to walk into an eight hundred range poke to earn a minion.
So how does this actually work?
Weird Pick #171
Top Lane Ahri
Top lane is the only lane where being ranged is a cheat code, and the most popular mid laner in the game somehow keeps forgetting she's allowed to go there.
Nobody bans Ahri because of what she does to a top laner. She lands in the top lane the same way every ranged pick does: the enemy locked a melee champion with no way to close the gap, and now they have to walk into an eight hundred range poke to earn a minion. The difference between Ahri and the usual ranged tops is that she isn't stuck up there. She's the one champion in that lane who can leave it, arrive at a mid lane fight three seconds later, and still be back before the wave hits her tower.
How to Play Top Lane Ahri
- Abilities
- Q, E, W to start, then prioritize R > Q > W > E
- Summoner Spells
- Starting Items
- Strategy
- Hold the wave near your own tower rather than shoving it, since a pushed top lane wave is an invitation to the enemy jungler and Ahri has no way to survive that. Spend Charm [E] on the enemy's engage rather than on your own, and treat Teleport as part of the build instead of an escape hatch: the lane is worth less than the fight you can join with it

Top Lane Ahri Runes Setup
When to Pick This
Look at what the enemy locked in top. A melee champion whose entire plan is to walk at you, with no dash and no ranged wave clear, is the reason this pick exists. If they have to spend the first eight minutes choosing between farming and taking damage, Ahri has already won the part of the game she's good at.
The other signal is on your own side of the draft. Teams that go heavy on physical damage hand the enemy a very easy itemization decision, and a magic damage top laner takes that decision away. Morellonomicon (and its Grievous Wounds) matters a bit more than it looks here too, because almost every champion who lives in the top lane wins fights through healing, and cutting that in half is closer to a counter pick than a damage item.
How It Works
Range Is The Matchup
Ranged versus melee in a solo lane is the oldest unfair trade in the game. Every last hit the enemy takes costs them health, and none of yours do.
She Has A Button For The All-In
A bruiser top laner has exactly one win condition against a mage: get on top of her once, with everything up, and never let go. Charm [E] is a hard stop to that attempt, and it's the reason Ahri can hold a lane that Lux or Xerath would simply lose the moment somebody flashed forward. Save it for their engage. Landing it as poke feels great and then costs you the lane thirty seconds later.
She Doesn't Have To Stay Up There
Top lane is far away from everything, so most top laners spend the mid game arriving late to fights that already ended. Spirit Rush [R] plus Teleport turns Ahri into a top laner who shows up on time, and a mage who joins a mid lane skirmish with three dashes available (all three from Spirit Rush [R]) is a different champion than one who walked there.
The Enemy Jungler Has To Care
A ranged top laner drags the enemy jungler up the map whether they wanted to go there or not, and every minute they spend camping a lane that isn't going anywhere is a minute your own bot lane plays a fair game.
Potential Pitfalls
Top Lane Is Long And You Are Squishy
What kills ranged tops is the map. That lane is the furthest thing on the board from your own jungle, the river entrance sits behind you, and Ahri dies to two people arriving at once at any point in the game. Ward the moment you have a trinket charge, hold the wave short, and accept giving up two or three minions rather than pushing into a gank you can see coming.
Tanks Just Walk Through It
Against a champion who builds health and doesn't need to win the trade, poke does nothing. They farm under tower, they scale, and they show up in the mid game with more health than your entire build can chew through. This is the matchup where the pick quietly stops mattering, and there's no clever answer to it beyond knowing in advance that it's coming.
You Will Miss The Tower Plates
Holding the wave near your tower is correct, and it also means the enemy takes the plating and the lane's gold advantage while you're doing it. That's a real cost. Ahri has to make it back somewhere else (usually on a roam), so a game where the rest of the map is quiet is a game where this pick ends up even at best.
Top Lane Ahri Conclusions
Top lane Ahri is a draft decision more than a build. Nothing about her changes: you're taking a mid lane champion who's already good and putting her in the one lane where a melee opponent has no way to argue with range. What you get is a lane that won't snowball and can't really lose either, and a top laner who's actually present for the rest of the game.
It falls apart against health stacking and against a jungler who decides to live in your lane. Everything else is in your favor, and against the right draft it's one of the least risky off-meta picks there is.
