Weird Pick #169: Bruiser Graves

Graves splash art

Graves is in six percent of jungle games and almost every one of them buys crit. The build most of them run is losing. The one almost nobody runs is winning by thirty points.

The most popular Graves item path in Ranked Solo/Duo right now sits under forty eight percent across nearly two thousand games. A very small group has thrown the crit page out entirely and builds him as a bruiser instead, and those games are coming back at seventy eight percent.

So how does this actually work?

When to Pick This

Build Graves this way when the enemy team is built around melee champions who have to come to you. Black Cleaver, Sundered Sky and Jak'Sho all reward a fight that lasts five seconds rather than one, and a diver who jumps onto a Graves with two resistance items and a Sterak's Gage shield is committing to exactly the fight this build wants. Against a poke comp that never lets a fight get that long, take the crit build instead.

It's also the right call when your team drafted no front line. Standard Graves is a squishy carry who happens to jungle, and if he's the toughest body on your team then somebody has to peel him all game. This version can walk into a fight first, soak the enemy engage, and still put out enough damage to matter, which changes what the other four players are allowed to draft.

How It Works

His Passive Was Always A Bruiser Passive

New Destiny [Passive] stacks armor and magic resist every time Graves is hit by an enemy champion or a monster (the single most bruiser shaped mechanic on any marksman in the game). A crit build never gets to use it because the plan is to stand at range, but a build that intends to be in the fight turns free stacking resistances into the reason it survives.

Sundered Sky Suits The Shotgun

New Destiny [Passive] also reloads him to two shells and spreads each shot into a cone of pellets, so his damage arrives as a series of chunky auto attacks rather than a smooth stream. Sundered Sky pays out a guaranteed critical strike and a heal on the first attack against each target, and Graves gets to that first attack faster and harder than almost anyone else.

Armor Shred Fixes The One Thing Crit Can't

The standard crit build answers armor with Lord Dominik's Regards and nothing else. Black Cleaver stacks flat armor reduction on every hit, applies it to the whole team rather than just to Graves, and comes with the health and ability haste this build needs anyway. Against a front line stacking armor, that's a much better answer than one late item.

Potential Pitfalls

This Is Sixty Games, Not Six Thousand

The seventy eight percent number is real, but it comes from around sixty games against nearly two thousand for the standard crit build. That's enough to say the build is clearly working for the people running it and nowhere near enough to say it would hold up if half the Graves players on the server switched to it tomorrow. Treat the gap as a strong signal worth testing.

You Give Up The Execute

Graves' crit build exists to delete a marksman from screen distance, and this one can't do that. There's no Infinity Edge, no Collector and no Lord Dominik's Regards, so a fed enemy carry who stays behind their front line is a problem you have no answer to. If the enemy team has one obvious win condition sitting in the back, the crit build is still the correct build.

It Pushes You Toward Your Worst Matchups

Graves already loses to Warwick, Shyvana, Nasus and Jarvan IV, all junglers who win long sustained fights, and this build asks you to have more of exactly those. The item path only makes the fight closer, so the early jungle routing still has to avoid those champions rather than assume the new stat line solves them.

Bruiser Graves Conclusions

Bruiser Graves is the most interesting thing in the jungle build data right now, partly because the standard crit build it replaces is somehow underperforming. It turns a fragile carry into a front line that still does real damage, and it uses a passive the normal build ignores completely. The sample is small enough that it deserves testing rather than blind trust, but if you've been losing games as a Graves who gets deleted the moment a fight starts, this is the version worth trying.
