Top Team Comps #144: Point and Click (Vex & Vayne)

You can't sidestep any of this. Every piece of crowd control on this team is aimed at a champion instead of at the ground, so the usual answer of "dodge it" simply isn't available.

Every draft has a champion in it who ends up deciding fights by hitting one skillshot. This one doesn't have any of those. It hits, and then it keeps hitting, and the enemy player's mechanical answer to that is nothing.

The thread is unmissable crowd control aimed at mobile champions. Cease and Desist [R] follows a target through Flash, Shadow Surge [R] marks a champion and comes to them, Condemn [E] sends them back into the wall they were leaving over, and Ruthless Predator [W] and Shield of Daybreak [Q] both arrive as basic attacks, which is the one delivery method nobody has learned to dodge. This isn't a draft about locking someone down for six seconds. It's a draft that beats the enemy's escape buttons rather than their positioning.

Champions

Renekton TOP

Top Lane – Renekton

The stun on Ruthless Predator [W] gets delivered as a basic attack, which means the enemy laner doesn't get to react to it, sidestep it or spend a summoner spell avoiding it. They only get to decide whether they were standing close enough. That turns a lane most players treat as a mechanical test into a positioning test, and it's the reason Renekton bullies champions who are supposed to out-scale him.
Vi JNG

Jungle – Vi

Nothing on this roster says the thesis more clearly than Cease and Desist [R]. Pick the person you want dead, press it, and they arrive. Flash doesn't help, a dash doesn't help, and the four teammates standing in the way get shoved aside on the trip.
Vex MID

Mid Lane – Vex

Vex is the specialist pick that makes the draft mean something. Doom 'n Gloom [Passive] interrupts a dash outright and marks anyone who tries one nearby, so the champions this comp is worst against are exactly the champions she was built to punish. Shadow Surge [R] then does the same job from range, marking someone across the fight and dragging her onto them. Against a team of five immobile picks she is the least valuable member here. Against the assassin who was going to jump on your bot laner, she's the answer.
Vayne ADC

Bot Lane – Vayne

She's here for two reasons. The first is Condemn [E], which is a targeted knockback that turns into a stun whenever there's a wall behind the target, and this comp spends most of its time fighting in the jungle where there always is. The second is that somebody on the roster has to still be dangerous at forty minutes, and everyone else here is at their best before then.
Leona SUP

Support – Leona

Shield of Daybreak [Q] is a stun attached to an autoattack, so the lane phase comes down to whether she got close enough rather than whether she aimed well. Sunlight [Passive] is the quieter half of the pick: every time somebody else on this team lands their unmissable ability, her mark is already sitting on the target waiting to be spent.

Key Concepts

  • Draft this into mobility, not away from it. A team of dashes, blinks and repositioning tools is the matchup where every pick here goes from good to unfair. Against five champions who were already standing still, you've spent a whole draft on reliability nobody needed.
  • The comp has no poke and very little waveclear, so it cannot sit behind a tower and wait. Its games are decided by whether it caught someone before the enemy grouped, which makes vision control around the enemy jungle worth more here than it is for most drafts.
  • Pick the target in champion select, not in the fight. Everything on this roster is single target, so five people spending their unmissable ability on five different enemies is the same as nobody using anything. Agree on who dies first.
  • Watch for cleanse and for stasis. Both of them beat this comp cleanly, and both of them are on a long cooldown, so the correct response is to take the fight again ninety seconds later rather than to conclude the draft was wrong.
  • Vayne should be the last one in and the first one to disengage. She's the only member who wins a long fight, which means keeping her alive through a short one is worth more than the damage she'd add to it.

Countering

Stop trying to avoid the crowd control and start making it not matter. Everything this draft does is single target, short range and on a real cooldown, so the counters are the ones that either cancel the effect outright or make the trip too expensive to take. Range helps enormously, and so does anything that punishes a team for committing five cooldowns into one player.

Here is an example team that may succeed:

Kayle TOP

Top – Kayle

Divine Judgment [R] makes the target of the whole combo unkillable for the exact window the combo needed, and she outranges every stun on the roster afterward.
Poppy JNG

Jungle – Poppy

Half of this comp arrives by dashing, and Steadfast Presence [W] simply cancels that. She is the rare counterpick that reads like it was written for the matchup.
Zilean MID

Mid – Zilean

A draft that spends everything on one target hates Chronoshift [R] more than any other single ability in the game.
Caitlyn ADC

Marksman – Caitlyn

Unmissable crowd control still has a range on it. Caitlyn wins the lane against Leona by standing outside of hers, and Ace in the Hole [R] finishes whoever tried to walk in.
Morgana SUP

Support – Morgana

Black Shield [E] is the counterpick. One cast on the right ally and the entire draft's premise stops being true for five seconds.

If picking apart an enemy draft is the part you find hard, start with the questions to ask before minions spawn.
