Infernal Cinders

Infernal Rift

The little flames on the ground of an Infernal map are Infernal Cinders. Walk over one for a quick burst of speed and a point of ability haste that stays with you.

They only show up once the Rift has turned Infernal (the second drake dies and the third one rolls fire). From then on, small clusters keep landing around the map, and they're pretty much free stats for whoever walks past first.

What a cinder gives you

A speed burst

150% bonus movement speed that decays over two seconds. It doesn't stack with itself, but each new pickup refreshes it, so a line of cinders keeps you fast the whole way down it.

One ability haste

Every cinder adds a stack, and every stack is one ability haste. Twenty cinders is twenty haste, and none of it costs gold or an item slot.

A glow

Your champion starts glowing with the first stack and gets brighter at 25 and again at 50. Everyone on the map can see who's been collecting (and who's worth killing first).

No dragon needed

Cinders come from the map itself. Your team gets them whether or not it ever takes a drake.

Where they spawn

There's no fixed list of cinder locations. They drop at random spots around the map, two or three at a time, every 20 seconds. That works out to six to nine new cinders a minute (spread over the whole map), and each one sits there for three minutes before it burns out if nobody grabs it.

  • The losing team gets more of them. Spawns lean toward the half of the map that belongs to whichever team is behind on gold.
  • They're hidden in fog of war. You only see a cluster if someone on your team has vision of that spot, so a warded jungle shows you more of them.
  • They start with the map change. No cinders exist before the Rift turns Infernal, and they keep coming for the rest of the game once it does.
If you're behind

Your side of the map is where most new cinders land. Sweeping your own jungle between waves is the safest haste you'll get all game.

What happens when you die

You always keep five stacks. Anything above five is split: half drops on the ground in a ring around where you died, and the other half is gone for good.

Dropped cinders can be picked up by either team after 0.85 seconds and last 30 seconds. They give the haste stack but not the speed burst (so grabbing a ring won't help you chase).

How to farm them

  1. Bend your path through any cluster that's roughly on the way. The speed burst wins back a bit of the detour, and you leave with a permanent stat.
  2. Chain pickups when several sit in a line. Each one refreshes the speed, so you cross the gap faster than you'd walk it.
  3. Sweep your own half when your team is behind on gold, since that's where spawns lean.
  4. Look for the brightest glow before a fight. An enemy past 25 stacks drops at least ten cinders for your team when they die.
  5. After a kill, walk over the ring. You've got 30 seconds, and the ring from a 25-stack kill holds ten, more than a minute of natural spawns across the whole map.
  6. Back off sooner when you're glowing hard. Dying at 45 stacks hands twenty cinders to whoever's standing over your body and burns the other twenty.

How cinders have changed

Riot added cinders in Patch 14.1, replacing the old Infernal effect that burned through the brush and walls by the buff camps. They've been buffed twice since, after players mostly ignored them (that's the reason Riot gave in the 14.17 notes).

PatchChange
14.1Added. 0.3 ability haste per cinder, clusters of 2-3 every 14 seconds.
14.2Ability haste per cinder raised to 0.6.
14.5Bug fix: cinders no longer show through fog of war.
14.15Clusters slowed to every 20 seconds and haste per cinder raised to 1 (left out of the notes, then written up in 14.17).

Nothing about cinders has moved in Riot's patch notes from 14.17 through 26.20.

Frequently asked questions

What are the flames on the ground in LoL?

Infernal Cinders. They only appear on an Infernal Rift, and walking over one gives you a short speed burst plus one permanent ability haste.

Are there set cinder locations?

No. They spawn at random around the map, weighted toward the half that belongs to the team behind on gold.

Do you lose cinders when you die?

Only the ones above five. Half of the excess drops on the ground for anyone to pick up and the rest disappears.

Why can't I see cinders on part of the map?

They're hidden by fog of war. Ward the area or walk into it and they'll show (before a 14.5 bug fix, they glowed right through the fog).

Does the enemy team get cinders too?

Yes. Anyone can pick them up, and the side that's behind gets more spawns on its half.
