LoL Death Timers Guide: How Long You Wait and What You Lose

LoL death timers guide preview

Death in League isn't a flat punishment. The timer has two inputs, five items still work from the gray screen, and a late kill is worth the window it opens rather than the gold it pays. Here's everything that happens the moment you hit zero.

Death Timers

What Dying Costs

Death in League isn't a punishment the game applies evenly. It scales with your level, it scales with the clock, and what it takes off you depends on what you were carrying at the time.

Which means the same death at 12 minutes and at 42 minutes are two different events, and only one of them is worth being careful about.

The timer has two inputs, not one

Your level sets a base wait, from 10 seconds at the start of the game up to 52.5 at level 18. The game clock then applies a multiplier on top of that base, and the two together are what you actually sit through.

So "I died at a bad time" is usually literal. The identical death costs wildly different amounts depending on which of those two numbers moved since your last one.

LevelBase wait on the Rift
1 to 210 seconds
616 seconds
825 seconds
1340 seconds
1852.5 seconds

The jump from level 7 to level 8 alone is five seconds, which is why a death at 8 feels so much worse than one at 6. Nothing about the game changed. You crossed a step in the table.

The Howling Abyss ignores game time entirely and runs on level alone, starting at 10 seconds from level 3 and adding two per level to reach 40 at eighteen. That's why a 45 minute ARAM still respawns everybody in well under a minute, and why the mode never develops the one-fight-ends-it feeling a long Rift game does.

The clock penalty starts at 15 minutes and never stops growing

Game timeWhat the multiplier does
Before 15:00Nothing at all. Your timer is purely your level, which is why early deaths feel survivable and mostly are
15:00 to 30:00Starts climbing, updating every 30 seconds rather than continuously. Dying at 15:10 genuinely costs more than dying at 14:50
30:00 to 45:00Keeps growing, more slowly
After 45:00Accelerates sharply. Every half minute adds noticeably more than the last one did, until the 50% cap lands at 55:00

That ramp is the real reason a long game ends on one fight instead of three. Nothing about the two teams changed. The punishment for losing a fight simply grew until it stopped being recoverable.

At the ceiling, a level 18 champion waits 78.75 seconds. That sounds like a mercy and isn't: a minute and a quarter is long enough for five people to take every objective on the map and finish the game, which is exactly what they do.

What comes off you, and what changes hands

Potions in progress stop. The Baron buff goes. Jungle buffs go. Anything temporary you drank, earned or picked up is gone when you stand back up, and none of it appears anywhere on the scoreboard. Two players with identical KDAs can have lost wildly different amounts.

Two of those losses are worse than losses, because somebody else collects them:

  • The red and blue crests transfer to your killer with a fresh full duration, so handing one over is worse than simply losing it.
  • Stacking items shed stacks, and the amount depends on the item. Dark Seal drops five, Mejai's drops ten, Hubris loses everything. If you're playing something that grows by not dying, a death charges you twice.

The gray screen isn't idle time

The death screen counts as standing on the shopping platform, so everything you'd do at the fountain works from it. Gold that arrives while you're dead can be spent before you respawn. Buy first, spectate second.

Five items still function while you're down: the three elixirs, Redemption and Your Cut. A support lying on the floor can throw a heal into the fight that just killed them, which is one of the few genuinely game-changing things available from a gray screen.

Your cooldowns keep running too. Nothing pauses, so a long ultimate spent right before you died is partly back by the time you are. That quietly changes what a death costs at different moments: dying with everything on cooldown is far cheaper than dying with everything available, and that's worth a second's thought before a coinflip fight.

Late on, the timer is the objective

Put the ramp and the buff losses together and you get the thing that decides most late games. A kill at 40 minutes isn't worth its gold. It's worth the fifty-odd seconds the map spends with one fewer defender on it.

That's why teams take a fight before an objective rather than after one, and why chasing survivors is almost never the right answer to winning a fight. The window is already open. Go and spend it.

The half people skip is the other direction. After you lose a late fight, the game isn't asking you to trade back. It's asking you to give something up cheaply and still be alive when the next window opens.

Frequently asked questions

What is the longest death timer in League?

78.75 seconds, reached at level 18 once the game clock multiplier caps at 55 minutes.

Why are my death timers suddenly so long?

The clock multiplier starts at 15 minutes and accelerates hardest after 45. Your level only sets the base.

Can you buy items while dead?

Yes. The death screen behaves like the shop platform, so anything you could do at the fountain works.

Do cooldowns tick down while you're dead?

They do, at the normal rate, for abilities and summoner spells alike.

What happens to your buffs when you die?

Temporary buffs are lost, and the red and blue crests transfer to your killer with their duration refreshed.

The short version

Before 15 minutes, dying costs a level's worth of time. After 45, it costs the game. Shop from the gray screen, count what you're carrying before you take a fight, and treat a late kill as a timer rather than a trophy.

For the gold side of the same equation, our gold guide covers bounties and what a death is worth to the other team, and our comeback methods list is for the games where the timers got away from you.
