Is Mel Support Bad? Why Her Win Rate Is So Low

Mel support wins her lane. She takes the gold lead, she takes most of the kills, and then she loses the game anyway.

She's sitting at a 42.77% win rate in bot lane on Patch 26.17, which is close to the worst number any support carries. The strange part is where that number doesn't come from.

It isn't the laning phase. Here's what's actually happening.

Is Mel Support Bad?

Patch 26.17 · Season 16

Mel support wins her lane. She takes the gold lead, she takes most of the kills, and then she loses the game anyway.

She's sitting at a 42.77% win rate in bot lane on Patch 26.17, which is close to the worst number any support carries. The strange part is where that number doesn't come from. It isn't the laning phase.

Pull up her support matchups and the same shape repeats against every single opponent. She comes out of lane ahead on gold. She's involved in most of the kills. And she loses.

She Wins Every Lane and Loses Every Matchup

These are her ten most common support matchups on the current patch. Read the last column against the first two.

Look at the Soraka row. Mel takes 85% of the kills in that lane and walks out of it 553 gold up, and the game still goes against her three times in five. Blitzcrank hands her nearly 800 gold and a three-quarters kill share and beats her anyway.

There's no version of this where the problem is the 2v2. She's one of the better bot lane bullies in the game right now. Whatever's costing her the win rate happens after the lane is over.

She's Karma, Without the Part Where It Keeps Working

The comparison people reach for is Karma, and it's a fair one. Both are 500-plus range mages who hold a lane by threatening a zone rather than by catching anybody, both win the early trade patterns off cooldowns rather than off engages, and both spend the first fifteen minutes making the enemy bot lane miserable from just outside their reach.

Karma is at a 48.93% win rate with a 6.90% pick rate. Mel is at 42.77% with 0.79%. Same job description, six points apart.

The gap is what happens at the twenty-five minute mark. Karma's payoff is a shield and a speed boost she hands to somebody who's still relevant in a five-on-five. Mel's payoff is damage she has to land herself, from 550 units, on a team that has spent the whole game learning exactly where she stands. Her kit is built to punish two people who are stuck in a lane with her. Take the lane away and most of it stops working.

She also has no dash, no blink, and no escape past a movement speed buff on a spell she wants to be using for something else. Every enchanter she competes with can reposition. She can't.

Rebuttal [W] Is a Real Teamfight Button

None of the above means she's a weak champion in a fight. Rebuttal [W] reflects enemy projectiles back at whoever fired them, and it's the single most swingy support ability in the game when it connects with something that mattered.

The buttons it sends home include some of the biggest in the game:

Ashe's Arrow

The classic one. A global stun that took Ashe ten seconds of setup gets turned around and lands on her own team, and the fight opens with the enemy engage tool working for you.

Seraphine's Encore [R]

Slow, wide, and telegraphed from across the map, which is exactly the profile Rebuttal [W] was written for. A charmed enemy backline is a won fight.

Caitlyn's Ace in the Hole [R]

A targeted execute that goes back to the sender. Caitlyn shoots herself, and she's usually the reason your carry was going to die.

Ezreal's Trueshot Barrage [R]

The map-wide poke that costs him nothing to throw suddenly costs him a lot, and he has to think twice about the free chip damage he's been living on.

That's a genuine, high-ceiling teamfight tool, and it's why her ban rate is 19.93% on a champion almost nobody plays. Roughly one in five games, somebody decides they'd rather not find out.

The trouble is that it's a 1.5 second window on a champion with no way to reposition into range of the thing she wants to reflect. Miss the timing and she's a 550 range mage standing in the open. That's a coin flip her team doesn't get to call.

The Seraphine Problem

Seraphine is where this gets strangest, because Mel beats her in a teamfight and loses to her in champion select.

In a five-on-five, Mel is close to Seraphine's worst nightmare. Encore [R] is slow enough to react to and important enough that eating it decides the fight. In lane, none of that applies, because Seraphine doesn't need her ultimate to win a 2v2 and Mel has to hold Rebuttal [W] for the poke instead.

The result is 43% for Mel over more than 1,300 games, and Mel shows up on op.gg's list of Seraphine's best matchups. Seraphine is also picked at 8.97%, eleven times Mel's rate, so this is a lane Mel actually has to queue into.

Mel finishes that matchup with 22,052 average damage dealt to Seraphine's 15,358 and takes two-thirds of the kills. Seraphine finishes it with 14.1 assists to Mel's 7.8, and with the win.

Where the Win Rate Actually Goes

Three things collapse at once when the lane ends.

The Execute Needs Time She Doesn't Get

Golden Eclipse [R] cashes in every point of chip damage she's stacked on a target, which is a fantastic mechanic in a lane where she's been poking the same two people for ten minutes. In a teamfight she gets a few seconds against five new targets. The payout scales with how long she's been allowed to work, and a teamfight doesn't give her that.

Her Damage Was Deliberately Flattened Late

The 26.3 rework cut her projectile scaling roughly in half and moved her passive damage onto a slow level-based curve. Riot took another pass in 26.8. She's a champion whose numbers are meant to peak early and thin out, and that's working as intended.

She Has Nowhere to Stand

At 550 range she's inside every engage in the game, and she can't leave. Karma at 525 has the same problem and answers it by being useful from behind her team. Mel has to be close enough to hit people to do anything at all.

So Is She Actually Bad?

No, and yes, and the two answers are about different things.

She isn't bad at winning a bot lane. The data above is unambiguous about that, and it's not close. If you play Mel support you will spend most of your games ahead at fifteen minutes, and you'll deserve it.

She's bad at turning that into a win, and the 42.77% is measuring precisely that gap. Every point of the lead she builds sits on a champion who gets progressively less able to use it, on a team that drafted an enchanter's slot and got a mage who stops mattering around the time the first tower falls.

That also explains the thing that looks like a contradiction from the outside. A 19.93% ban rate against a 0.79% pick rate means she's banned roughly twenty-five times more often than she's played. Nobody bans a champion because she wins. They ban her because losing to her in lane feels unfair, and she is very good at making that happen.

If you want her to work, the honest answer is that you have to end the game. Push the lead into towers and objectives rather than into a scaling curve, because there isn't one waiting for you. Blind picking her into a Seraphine or a Karma and planning to outscale is how the 37% rows happen.

She's a champion with a specific and shrinking window, not a bad one. The win rate is what it looks like when a whole roster figures out how to wait you out.
