How Behavior Systems Work NowLeague's behavior systems have changed more in the last two years than in the decade before them, and most players have no idea. Honor stopped resetting annually. Chat offenses can now cost you the game rather than just your chat box. And the thing that gets you punished fastest isn't flaming at all.
Here's the current state of all of it.
Chat Offenses Can Now Cost You the Game
This is the big one, and it started in Patch 26.5. Previously, saying something genuinely vile in chat earned you a chat restriction: you kept playing, you just couldn't type. Riot's own framing was that this didn't match what players expected, and that it felt wrong watching someone say awful things and immediately queue up again.
So the penalties were split by severity.

Riot has also said it intends to extend this to direct messages during 2026, so that someone who takes abuse out of game chat and into DMs afterwards can still be reported and actioned for it.
The distinction is severity, not volume. Being repeatedly annoying in chat is treated differently from saying one genuinely hateful thing. You can rack up mild offenses and collect escalating restrictions; you can also earn a gameplay ban from a single message if it crosses the line. Those are two separate tracks, and the second one is new.
Worth knowing alongside this: zero-tolerance language triggers automatic system muting. The message is never delivered to anyone, the sender is muted, and the rest of the lobby is told it happened.
The Honor System, Rebuilt
Honor runs from level 1 to level 5, and level 3 is the neutral starting point, not the bottom. New accounts and reformed accounts both sit there.
Honor 1
The punishment tier. No all-chat, no champion select chat, no post-game chat, and pings and emotes are hard capped to a couple every few seconds.
Honor 2
No all-chat, and you lose the recurring Battle Pass experience bonuses. Ping and emote limits are looser but still present.
Honor 3
Normal access to everything, with small Battle Pass experience drops. This is where everyone starts.
Honor 4 and 5
Increasing Battle Pass experience rewards. Honor 5 adds an emblem in chat, the Honor recall decal, targeted ally pings, and access to the Honor skin line.
Two changes from the 2025 overhaul matter most. Riot reset everyone to Honor 3 and ended annual honor resets, so honor is now permanent progression that carries year to year instead of starting over. And Honor Capsules and Orbs were retired, replaced by Battle Pass experience drops that scale with your level.
How you lose it, and why it stings. Any punishment drops you straight to Honor Level 1. Not down a level, all the way to the bottom. Climbing back requires sustained positive play over a long stretch, and because resets no longer happen, there's no annual clean slate to wait for. The Honor skins in particular have no other acquisition path at all.
AFK and LeaverBuster
LeaverBuster escalates through tiers, and since Riot's 2023 overhaul it adds outright queue lockouts on top of the old queue delays.

Ranked AFKs are treated more harshly than normals or ARAM, and they add reduced LP gains for several games on top of whatever tier you land in. The delays and lockouts hit every queue except Clash and Teamfight Tactics, so there's nowhere to sit them out.
The clock that starts all of this is short. You're warned at three minutes idle and kicked at five, and a custom game or the practice tool never counts however long you stand still in it.
One thing that has gone away: Ranked Restrictions were discontinued as of Patch 26.04.
Griefing Detection Got Much More Aggressive
Since Patch 25.9, Riot has run a considerably more aggressive automated detector for intentional feeding, griefing and sabotage. It looks for patterns of repeated deliberate deaths with no damage and no objective contribution, rather than judging any single bad game.
Internal testing reportedly saw daily bans jump by roughly an order of magnitude when it went live. If you've noticed fewer players openly running it down mid than you remember from a few years ago, this is why.
It looks at patterns, not bad games. Everyone has games where they die repeatedly to a fed opponent, and the system is built to tell that apart from someone walking into a tower ten times. Playing badly isn't a reportable offense and never has been.
What This Actually Means For You
Mute is still the answer
Every piece of climbing advice ever written agrees on this. You can't be punished for a message you didn't send, and you can't be tilted by one you didn't read.
Honor is worth more than it used to be
Now that it doesn't reset annually, honor is long-term progression. Losing it to one bad night costs you far more than it did when the slate wiped every season.
Severity beats frequency
One genuinely hateful message is treated as worse than a hundred grumpy ones. If you're going to be frustrated in chat, understand exactly where the line sits.
Don't grief a lost game
Surrender votes exist, and the alternative now carries real detection behind it. A game you've decided is over isn't worth an account.
