No crit, no lethality, almost no kill pressure at all, and Yone still walks out of every fight standing. Tank Yone Top turns a duelist into someone the enemy team simply can't finish off.
Nobody is actually building tank Yone in Ranked Solo/Duo right now, because everyone still treats him as a crit or lethality carry by default. But Soul Unbound [E] already gives him a free untargetable window most bruisers only get from a full Zhonya's Hourglass, and stacking real tank stats on top of that built-in safety net turns him into something closer to unkillable than anything a normal Yone build ever manages.
So how does this actually work?
Weird Pick #163
Tank Yone Top

How to Play Tank Yone Top
- Abilities
- W, Q, E to start, then prioritize W > Q > E, taking R whenever available
- Summoner Spells
- Starting Items
- Strategy
- Trade with Spirit Cleave [W]'s cleave and shield rather than all-in combos, use Soul Unbound [E] defensively to dodge burst instead of just for damage, and look for Fate Sealed [R] to gather multiple enemies into a fight your team can clean up even if you can't finish it yourself
- Core Items
Tank Yone Top Runes Setup
Primary: Aftershock, Shield Bash, Conditioning, Unflinching
Secondary: Triumph, Legend: Bloodline
When to Pick This
Tank Yone Top is at his best when the enemy team leans on sustained damage or healing you can't otherwise answer, since Thornmail's retaliation damage and Grievous Wounds and Frozen Heart's attack speed slow directly punish exactly that kind of comp. A healing-reliant bruiser or an auto-attack hypercarry top laner is a much worse matchup for this build than for a normal one.
He's also a strong pick when your own team already has enough damage and just needs someone durable enough to walk into the backline and land Fate Sealed [R] without dying before he gets there. Soul Unbound [E]'s built-in untargetable window lets him force his way into a fight no normal frontline could survive and still come out the other side alive.
How It Works
Soul Unbound Is Already A Free Defensive Tool
Soul Unbound [E] briefly makes Yone an untargetable spirit while his body stays behind, dodging most burst combos and hard engage for free. Most bruisers have to buy a full Zhonya's Hourglass to get that kind of window; stacking tank stats on top of a champion who already has it built in makes him absurdly hard to actually kill in a straight fight.
Fate Sealed Doesn't Need Raw Damage To Matter
His ultimate is a knock-up and gather tool, not a burst finisher, so its value doesn't disappear just because the build skips AD items. A tank Yone who lands Fate Sealed [R] still sets up a kill for the rest of his team even without the damage to close it out himself.
Tank Items That Fight Back On Their Own
Sunfire Aegis burns everyone standing nearby and Thornmail deals damage straight back to anyone who hits him with a basic attack, so Yone keeps dealing real chip damage in an extended fight purely by standing there and being attacked, on top of whatever Spirit Cleave [W] still contributes.
Potential Pitfalls
Spirit Cleave's Shield Shrinks Without AD
Spirit Cleave [W]'s shield scales with total attack damage, and tank items provide little to none of it. The survivability tool that makes a normal Yone build so safe in lane trades is far weaker here, so this build leans almost entirely on raw stats and Soul Unbound [E]'s untargetable window to stay alive instead.
Much Lower Kill Threat
Without lethality or crit, Yone's damage output drops enough that he can't solo carry a lane or a fight on his own. He wins by surviving and setting up kills rather than finishing them, so this pick lives or dies on whether the rest of the team can actually follow up on what he starts.
Tank Yone Top Conclusions
Tank Yone Top isn't trying to out-duel a real bruiser on damage, and judging the pick by that standard misses why it works. He wins by surviving fights a squishier Yone would never walk away from and by turning Fate Sealed [R] into a setup tool his team can clean up behind him. Pair him with teammates who bring the finishing damage and this weird pick starts looking like a legitimate frontline with a very unusual kit behind it.
