Weird Pick #162: Support Kog'Maw

Kog'Maw splash art

No shield, no heal, no hard engage, and somehow still a support pick worth trying. AP Kog'Maw plays the botlane like a long-range artillery piece instead of a peel bot.

Kog'Maw doesn't show up anywhere in the support numbers in Ranked Solo/Duo right now, and the reason is obvious the moment you look at his kit: no shield, no heal, no hard crowd control. But Living Artillery [R] has some of the longest range of any ability in the game, and a full mage build finally lets his poke tools do damage that actually matters instead of scaling off a support item budget that was never built for him.

So how does this actually work?

When to Pick This

Support Kog'Maw is at his best when the enemy team is stacking health and armor and your own damage otherwise struggles to punish it, since Liandry's Torment burns a percentage of a target's max health over time regardless of how tanky they build. A frontline-heavy enemy comp with a tank support and a bruiser jungler is exactly the kind of matchup that turns his poke into real, unavoidable damage over the course of a fight.

He's also a strong pick when the enemy botlane has no hard engage of its own, since Kog'Maw has nothing to answer a hook or a dive with beyond Flash and his own zone control. Pair him with an ADC who doesn't need protection and a jungler willing to answer ganks himself, and the total lack of peel stops being the problem it looks like on paper.

How It Works

Poke Ratios Built For A Mage Item Path

Caustic Spittle [Q] and Living Artillery [R] both carry real AP ratios, well above anything support Kog'Maw ever sees running a Zaz'Zak's Realmspike and a Redemption. Land a full rotation behind a stacked Liandry's Torment and a Rylai's Crystal Scepter and the poke damage starts reading like a real mid lane mage's, not a peel bot's afterthought. Caustic Spittle [Q] also shreds the target's armor and magic resist for a few seconds, so opening with it before following up with autos or Living Artillery [R] makes every point of damage in the trade hit harder, not just the poke itself.

Void Ooze Turns Poke Into A Trap

Void Ooze [E] leaves a pool on the ground that slows anyone standing in it and amplifies the damage of Kog'Maw's other abilities against them. Drop it across a choke point or over the wave and any trade the enemy botlane tries to start turns into a much worse one, all before Living Artillery [R] even factors in.

The Longest Poke Range In The Botlane

Living Artillery [R]'s range dwarfs every auto-attack-based poke tool a normal support carries, letting Kog'Maw threaten damage from a position no enemy laner can realistically walk up and punish. Most botlane poke still means standing in auto-attack range at some point; his doesn't.

Bot Lane Synergies

Kai'Sa

Kai'Sa's own mobility and shield mean she never actually needs the peel Kog'Maw can't provide, and she can dash straight through a Void Ooze [E] pool to finish off anyone it slowed without waiting on him to follow up.

Jinx

Jinx already wants to sit back and out-range the enemy botlane rather than trade in close, which is exactly the kind of lane Kog'Maw's poke and zone control are built to hold open for her.

Samira

Samira brings the all-in and the self-peel Kog'Maw's kit is missing, and she can walk into a fight he's already softened up with poke and a slowed Void Ooze [E] pool without needing him to follow her in.

Potential Pitfalls

No Peel, No Engage, No Escape

Support Kog'Maw brings nothing to answer a hook, a dive, or an all-in beyond Flash and whatever distance Void Ooze [E] bought earlier in the fight. A support with real engage on the other side of the lane, a Nautilus or a Leona, can walk him down and delete him before his own team can react.

Falls Off Hard When Behind

His poke damage only matters if it's actually landing, and a Kog'Maw who falls behind in gold or gets zoned off his max range stops threatening anything at all. Unlike a real enchanter support, there's no fallback utility to lean on once the poke game stops working, so a lost lane tends to stay lost.

Worst case, if the lane goes badly enough that Kog'Maw ends up dying anyway, at least Icathian Surprise [Passive] gets some use out of it: he goes zombie, sprints in on the enemy team, and detonates for true damage that ignores whatever resistances they built. It isn't a strategy so much as a consolation prize, but it's one every Kog'Maw pick comes with for free.

Support Kog'Maw Conclusions

Support Kog'Maw isn't trying to out-peel a real support, and judging the pick by that standard misses the point entirely. He wins lanes by threatening damage from further away than the enemy botlane can safely stand and by turning Void Ooze [E] into a trap that punishes anyone who tries to walk it down. Pair him with a carry who doesn't need protecting and this weird pick starts looking like a legitimate long-range poke lane with a very unusual kit behind it.
