Riot designs a champion for one lane. The playerbase reads the kit and puts them somewhere else entirely. These ten never went back.

Every champion ships with an intended home, whether that's mid lane mage or top lane juggernaut. Sometimes that intention survives contact with a few million ranked games, and sometimes players find the lane the kit was actually built for, whatever the release notes said.

Riot designs a champion for one lane. The playerbase reads the kit and puts them somewhere else entirely. These ten never went back.

Counting down from the ones that merely drifted a lane over to the champion whose intended role has been a historical footnote for more than a decade.

#10: Zyra, the Mid Mage Who Moved In With the Support

Zyra arrived as a mid lane control mage, and on paper she still reads like one. Long range poke, a root, a zone control ultimate. In practice her plants punish a two person lane far harder than a one person lane, and her root plus knockup combo is worth more next to a marksman than it is farming a wave alone. She's been a support first champion for so long now that seeing her mid feels like the off meta pick (exactly backwards from how she was pitched).

#9: Neeko, the Disguise Nobody Uses Mid

Neeko launched as a mid lane mage whose whole hook was pretending to be a teammate. But the disguise is worth almost nothing when you're alone in a lane and everyone can count champions on the minimap. Put her next to four other people and suddenly the trick works. Her ultimate is also a proper team fight stun rather than a solo kill tool, which pushes her further toward a role Riot didn't lead with.

#8: Naafiri, and the Jungle Riot Went Back and Built

Naafiri released in 2023 as a mid lane assassin (for players who wanted an assassin without the mechanical tax). The mid lane didn't really adopt her, and Riot eventually shipped a midscope update that specifically improved her clear speed and mobility to open up the jungle. That's a rare thing to see stated out loud. Most champions on this list got moved by their players. With Naafiri, Riot looked at where the kit actually wanted to live and went back to build the road there.

#7: Quinn, a Marksman Who Lives in the Top Lane

Riot classifies Quinn as a marksman. She has the range and the attack focused kit, and the item path matches. She also spends almost all of her time in the top lane, because everything that makes her good works better in a solo lane. Vault [E] wants a duel rather than a two versus two, her burst damage pattern suits a lane bully more than a sustained damage carry, and Behind Enemy Lines [R] is a map traversal tool that a bot laner has very little use for. When this site covered her in her own listed role, it ran as a Weird Pick. Playing the marksman in the marksman position was the strange version.

#6: Swain, Reworked Into a Mid Laner, Employed as a Support

The 2018 rework rebuilt Swain as a mid lane battlemage with a drain tank ultimate and a soul collecting passive. It's a good mid lane kit. It's an even better support kit, because the root on his E is a reliable pick tool and the pull he can follow it with turns a bot lane skirmish into a free kill. Swain spends most of his life in a lane Riot rebuilt him to leave.

#5: Seraphine, Mid Lane on the Box, Bot Lane in Practice

Seraphine was introduced as a mid lane mage and it didn't take long at all for the playerbase to relocate her. Her kit rewards standing near allies (her abilities gain extra effects based on nearby teammates), and a solo lane is the one place in the game where you have none. She's since been a support staple and a bot lane experiment, and her stated home lane is the one place she makes the least sense.

#4: Taliyah, the Mage Who Found the Jungle

Taliyah shipped as a mid lane mage with a roaming wall ultimate, and her mid lane career hasn't been a consistent one since. The jungle, on the other hand, suits her almost perfectly. Worked Ground gives her a fast clear. Her ultimate cuts off ganks and escapes better than it ever cut off a lane, and her whole identity as a map manipulator is worth more from a role that touches the whole map. Riot has spent years balancing her across both (its own admission of the problem).

#3: Senna, the Support Who Became a Marksman

Senna is the cleanest case on this list of players simply overruling the design. Riot built a support, gave her a soul collecting passive to fix her lack of farm, and shipped her into the support role. Players immediately noticed that a champion who gains permanent attack damage and range from a passive is a marksman wearing a support's job title, and started running her as a carry with a second support next to her. The soul mechanic never cared which role she was in, so she's been balanced across two of them ever since.

#2: Mordekaiser, and the Bot Lane That Never Happened

This one is the purest version of the idea, because Riot actively built a lane for Mordekaiser and nobody moved in. The 2015 juggernaut update gave him a dragon stealing ultimate and a kit designed to send him bot lane as a duo laner (a bold swing at changing what the bot lane could be). Players kept playing him top anyway. The bot lane experiment was eventually abandoned, and the 2019 rework returned him to the solo lane he had never actually left.

#1: Graves, a Marksman Who Has Not Been One in Years

Graves is a marksman. He's classified as one and was designed as one, and he spent his early years as a bot lane carry. He's also been a jungler for so long that an entire generation of players has never once seen him in the role he was built for. The 2015 rework handed him a shotgun with two shells and a dash that resets (plus a smoke screen), which reads far more like a skirmishing jungler than a champion who stands behind minions and auto attacks. Riot has never reclassified him, and at this point they don't need to. Nobody is confused about where Graves lives.

Conclusions

None of these ten are mistakes, exactly. A kit that works better one lane over is still a kit that works. What's interesting is how rarely the correction gets made officially. Riot moved Naafiri and gave up on Mordekaiser bot, but Graves is still filed as a marksman and Zyra is still nominally a mid laner, because at some point the community's answer just becomes the real one and the label stops mattering.
