Hi everyone and welcome back to the FOTM report series. This time around, we will be covering the rise of Frost Queen's Claim on mid laners as a utility based item. This item generally takes the place of a Morellonomicon or an Athene's Unholy Grail, which most laners build as a second item. Note that the majority of people still go Doran's Ring to start. Introduction

Hi everyone and welcome back to the FOTM report series. This time around, we will be covering the rise of Frost Queen's Claim on mid laners as a utility based item.

When to Use It

This item takes the place of a Morellonomicon or an Athene's Unholy Grail, which most laners build as a second item. Note that the majority of people still go Doran's Ring to start.

Doran's Ring vs Spellthief's Edge
I see a lot of people try and start spellthief's edge as a midlaner, which is probably a bad idea.

Doran's ring gives 15 AP, 60 health, and 50% mana regen vs 5 AP and 25% base mana regen from Spellthief's.

There is essentially no case where you would ever want this to happen, as you are giving up your early game completely. However, if you are feeling very confident and want to get an early gold lead, feel free to try starting with Spellthief's Edge.

Cost Analysis

Frost Queen's Claim
In terms of gold efficiency, the item is 97.2% gold efficient according to the wikia, which uses base items like amplifying tome to figure out how each point of a stat is worth.

Meanwhile, Morellonomicon is 121.3% gold efficient and Athene's is 111% gold efficient.

However, this does not include any of the passives on the items, and Frost Queen's Claim catches up and surpasses the other two around mid-game.

Advantages

  • More gold mid-late game
  • Awesome active for scouting
  • Extra CC for landing skillshots
  • Low 10% cooldown reduction if you plan to build close to the cap

Disadvantages

  • Lower damage output at full build
  • Need to harass to maximize gold output
  • Weaker stats before finishing full item

Conclusions

Overall, I think it is an awesome item that definitely deserves trying out, but it does gimp your damage somewhat since it does not provide the same amount of raw stats that other similar items provide.

It does make up that stat differential in gold earned though, and having one or two of the ghost scouts on your team is incredibly useful on any team for the sheer utility they provide.
