League of Legends is classified as a "Real Time Strategy Game" composed of either 3 players per team or 5 players per team in regular games, with 2 teams total.
The point of the game is to power up your hero by killing monsters or being nearby, gaining gold, and eventually getting through the enemy defenders and destroying the enemy base.
It's free to play, and everything except for "Skins" can be bought using the in-game currency "Influence Points (IP)". You can also use cash to exchange for in-game "Riot Points (RP)" that goes for about 100 points per dollar, but they also give a generous bonus for buying in larger quantities.
Personally I've bought about $60 worth of Riot Points, but I also have plenty of friends who play that haven't spent a dime. There's a ton of heroes and skins already in game, and every week they come out with a new hero so there's always fresh content.
If you're looking for something that's not your classic MMORPG and won't lure you back into WOW, League of Legends is definitely worth a try.
