LoL trinkets guide preview

Trinkets are free, they don't use an item slot, and swapping one hands the new trinket your old cooldown. Level 9 opens up the rest.

Trinkets

The Free Slot

The trinket slot is separate from your six item slots, only accepts trinkets, and costs nothing to fill. So there's never a reason to be walking around without one, and players still do it every game.

Free to hold, free to change

Every trinket costs zero gold and trading one for another costs zero gold. They sit under Vision and Trinkets in the shop's tools section, and you can't stack two or put a real item in that slot.

The new trinket inherits the old cooldown

Swapping doesn't hand you a fresh charge. Whatever cooldown you were sitting on carries straight over to the replacement (the one genuine cost of changing, and the reason people avoid it).

So swap after you've spent the old charge. Buying the sweeper the moment you recall with a ward charge in hand throws that charge away for nothing.

They get better on their own

Basic trinkets have cooldowns that shrink and effects that grow with your champion's level (you don't have to do anything). The ward trinket falls from a 210 second cooldown toward 90, and the wards it places last longer as you go.

That scaling is the reason a level 3 support and a level 15 support ward at completely different rates, and why "ward more" is advice that gets easier to follow the longer the game runs.

Level 9 is the only gate

You can't upgrade into the advanced trinket until level 9. Below that the shop offers only the two basic ones.

Nine isn't a number anybody announces, so mark it yourself. It lands roughly where the mid game starts. That's the moment your options change from one ward at a time to a real vision decision.

The sweeper reveals rather than destroys. It shows you what's hidden, and somebody still has to walk over and hit the ward.

What each one actually gives you

The ward trinket stores two charges. That's the single most useful thing on this page, and most players play the whole game as though it only has one. Two charges at 210 seconds each early on (dropping toward 90), and the wards themselves run 90 to 120 seconds depending on your level.

The sweeper also stores two charges, on a 160 second cooldown falling to 100, and each use reveals wards and traps around you for 8 seconds. Eight seconds is longer than it feels, so sweep before you walk in rather than while you're already standing in the pit.

Farsight Alteration is the level 9 upgrade and it's a different tool rather than a better ward. It reveals a distant area for two seconds and leaves behind a ward with no timer (it lives until it spots an enemy champion, then dies). That's what it's for: parking permanent vision somewhere nobody walks, and getting a free scout of a pit or a jungle entrance from the safe side of a wall. The cooldown starts near 200 seconds and halves as you level.

Two smaller things. Using a trinket doesn't break stealth, so an invisible champion can ward without giving themselves away. And killing the Rift Herald hands whoever picks up the eye a replacement trinket (your usual one goes away until the eye is spent).

Frequently asked questions

Do trinkets take up an item slot?

No, the trinket slot is separate and only accepts trinkets.

Does swapping trinkets cost gold?

No, but the new one inherits the cooldown you were already on.

When can you upgrade your trinket?

At level 9.

Does the sweeper kill wards?

No, it only reveals them. Somebody still has to attack the ward.

How many wards does the trinket hold?

Two. Both basic trinkets store two charges, so a full ward trinket is two wards.

What does Farsight Alteration do?

It reveals a distant area for two seconds and leaves a ward that lasts until it spots an enemy champion instead of expiring on a timer.

Do trinkets improve as you level?

Yes, with shorter cooldowns and stronger effects, automatically.

The short version

Always carry one, swap after you've used the charge rather than before, and put a reminder on level 9. It's the cheapest upgrade in the game, because it's a slot you already own.

For where the wards should go, our vision guide covers placement and timers, and our sweeping lens guide covers taking theirs down.
