League has three kinds of stealth and they don't work the same way. Here's every champion in each category, the detection radius on each camouflage, and why crowd control never breaks any of it.
League of Legends Guide
Stealth and Invisibility
Every Type and Who Has ItCamouflage, invisibility and stealthed traps are three separate mechanics wearing one word. Camouflage hides you only while no enemy champion stands inside a detection radius. Invisibility hides you no matter how close anybody gets. Traps are their own category with their own counter.
Standing next to a camouflaged champion exposes them automatically. Standing next to an invisible one does nothing at all, and that gap is where most deaths to stealth come from.
Camouflage: seven champions, seven different radii
Camouflage breaks on its own the moment an enemy champion is close enough and has line of sight. The radius is the stat that matters, and it runs from 400 units up to 800 (most of a screen apart).
| Champion | Source | Detection radius |
|---|---|---|
| Akshan | Going Rogue [W] | 800 |
| Rengar | Thrill of the Hunt [R] | 710 |
| Evelynn | Demon Shade [Passive] | 700 |
| Pyke | Ghostwater Dive [W] | 600 |
| Twitch | Ambush [Q] | 500 |
| Viego | Harrowed Path [E] | 450 |
| Senna | Curse of the Black Mist [E] | 400 |
Read that table as a warning list rather than trivia. Akshan gives himself away from more than twice the distance Senna does, so walking into an Akshan is survivable and walking into a Twitch usually isn't.
Two stacking rules matter here. If a champion carries two sources of camouflage, the smallest radius applies. If they have invisibility on top of camouflage, invisibility wins outright until it ends.
Camouflage also warns its owner before it breaks. The indicator changes once an enemy champion is within 300 units of the reveal radius, so a camouflaged champion knows roughly a third of a screen ahead of time that somebody is closing. Enemy clones count for the reveal too (handy against the champions who field one).
Invisibility: twelve champions, and proximity does nothing
Invisibility doesn't care how close you stand. Only true sight strips it (turrets, control wards and a few champion abilities), or the champion doing something that breaks it themselves.
| Champion | Source |
|---|---|
| Akali | Twilight Shroud [W] |
| Aurora | Across the Veil [W] |
| Kai'Sa | Supercharge [E], once evolved |
| Kha'Zix | Void Assault [R], and longer once evolved |
| LeBlanc | Mirror Image [Passive] |
| Neeko | Shapesplitter [W] |
| Qiyana | Elemental Wrath [Q], while holding brush |
| Shaco | Deceive [Q] |
| Talon | Shadow Assault [R] |
| Teemo | Guerrilla Warfare [Passive] |
| Vayne | Final Hour [R] |
| Wukong | Warrior Trickster [W] |
Weirdly, Teemo is the one exception to the crowd control rule below: his stealth breaks if he's knocked airborne, and nobody else's does.
Traps and wards are a separate category
Four champion abilities place stealthed traps: Shaco's Jack in the Box [W], Jhin's Captive Audience [E], Nidalee's Bushwhack [W] and Teemo's Noxious Trap [R]. Every stealth ward in the game sits in the same bucket.
The counter is different too. A sweeper specifically reveals stealthed wards and traps, which is why the trinket that feels useless against an assassin is the correct answer to a Teemo.
The rules all three share
- You can't click what you can't see. Point-and-click spells and basic attacks both need sight of the target, so stealth switches off an entire category of abilities aimed at that champion.
- Crowd control doesn't break stealth. Stuns, roots, slows and knockups all leave it intact. The two exceptions are taunt and berserk (both force the victim to attack).
- Getting hit makes them shimmer. Any damaging ability (even one dealing zero) shimmers the silhouette in place for 0.6 seconds with a sound cue. Not targetable, but a precise position for long enough to aim the next skillshot.
- Skillshots connect without revealing. They don't need sight and don't grant it (the impact effects still play at the target's real position). Throwing a wide skillshot into suspicious fog is a legitimate scan that costs a cooldown instead of a trinket.
- Ghosting only lasts while unseen. Stealthed units walk through other units freely until somebody has sight of them, at which point they collide with everything again.
- Re-stealthing is instant. Walk back out of the revealed area and there's no fade timer at all, so chasing a stealth champion out of turret range so rarely works.
What actually reveals somebody
True sight is the only thing that reveals a stealthed champion and makes them targetable again. Every turret has it across its whole range for free, control wards carry it, and a small number of champion abilities apply it.
The sweeper is the other half and it works differently. It exposes a silhouette at intervals without making the target clickable (enough to tell you where somebody is and not enough to point a spell at them).
Add the camouflage table and the counterplay is short. Against camouflage, walking at them is a detection tool. Against invisibility, only vision is.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between camouflage and invisibility?
Camouflage breaks when an enemy champion is inside its detection radius. Invisibility ignores proximity entirely.
Which champions have true invisibility?
Akali, Aurora, Kai'Sa, Kha'Zix, LeBlanc, Neeko, Qiyana, Shaco, Talon, Teemo, Vayne and Wukong.
Which champions use camouflage?
Akshan, Evelynn, Pyke, Rengar, Senna, Twitch and Viego, with detection radii from 400 to 800 units.
Does crowd control break stealth?
No, apart from taunt and berserk. Teemo is the single exception, whose stealth breaks on knockup.
Does a sweeper make stealthed champions targetable?
No. It shows their silhouette without revealing them. Only true sight, from turrets, control wards or specific abilities, makes them clickable.
The short version
Learn which of the two lists your enemy is on. Against the seven camouflage champions, closing distance is itself a detection tool and the radius tells you how far that reaches. Against the twelve invisibility champions, walking at them accomplishes nothing and only vision does.
For the vision half of that, our vision guide covers wards and sweepers, and our brush guide covers the free concealment everybody gets.
