Voidgrubs and Rift Herald guide preview

The top pit has three tenants and all of them expire. Voidgrubs heal each other, the Herald scales with the lobby and carries a weak point on her back, and neither of them pays in gold. Here's how to take both.

Voidgrubs and Rift Herald

The Top Pit

The baron pit has three tenants before Baron himself, and the first two are on a lease.

Voidgrubs and the Rift Herald both leave whether or not anybody took them, they both pay in structure damage rather than gold, and both punish the way most teams instinctively fight them. Here's the full set of rules for the pit's early residents.

14:45Grubs leave for good

Everything in this pit expires

Voidgrubs arrive at 8:00 and vanish for good at 14:45, or 14:55 if they're mid-fight, so the whole window is under seven minutes long. The Rift Herald takes the same ground at 15:00 and leaves at 19:45 under the same rule. Baron moves in at 20:00 and, unlike the other two, keeps coming back.

None of them wait for you. Nobody takes the grubs by fourteen minutes and they simply leave, along with the tower pressure they were worth. That's the part that separates this pit from the dragon one: the dragon you skipped is replaced by another dragon, and the grubs you skipped are gone.

The grubs heal each other, so focusing one is the slow way

Every time a grub dies, the survivors heal for 30% of their maximum health plus 30% of whatever they were missing, and anything above full becomes bonus health. They burn that healing off again as true damage to themselves over the following ten seconds, but you have to survive those ten seconds first.

So the camp specifically punishes the approach everyone takes. Killing one, then starting on the next, is the slowest possible clear. Spreading damage and finishing them close together is the fast one.

Then there's the swarm. The moment a fight starts, and every twelve seconds it continues, each grub spawns four voidmites. Three grubs is twelve of them at a time, they decay over six seconds, and your Smite doesn't work on them at all.

Why solo grubs go badly

A slow clear isn't a clear against three targets, it's a clear against fifteen. That's the real cost of walking in alone and early, and it's why bringing a laner for twenty seconds is worth more than it looks.

The reward is turret damage, not gold

Each grub grants the whole team a stack of Touch of the Void, which makes enemy structures burn for true damage over time. Take all three and the team also gets Hunger of the Void, sending allied voidmites to chew on turrets alongside you.

Thirty gold a grub is nothing. What you actually bought is early plates and early towers, which makes grubs worth the most to a team with somebody who can walk at a structure immediately afterward, and worth noticeably less to one that can't.

One quirk for the stat-watchers: the takedown is announced once the whole group is dead, but only the first grub killed registers as an epic monster takedown for challenges. Stealing the third grub takes something real off the enemy without going on your record the way a stolen dragon does.

The Herald is as strong as the game is

Her level is the average level of all ten champions when she spawns, with six as the floor. She isn't a fixed wall you eventually outgrow, she scales with the lobby, exactly like the jungle camps do. Waiting for your team to get stronger moves both numbers.

Neither she nor the grubs can be crowd controlled. Both are immune to everything except stasis, their stats can't be modified by anything you bring, and she caps percentage-health damage at 50 per hit, so the usual tools for chewing through something huge don't apply. Bring damage and a way to survive her charge, and accept that the rest of your kit is decoration in this pit.

Once she's yours, summoning her into a lane sends her at a structure for 3000 true damage per charge, with each charge after the first worth two thirds of the one before. Every successful hit also costs her 66% of her current health, so she's spending herself to do it.

The eye on her back is worth 12% of her health

Champion attacks that land on the eye deal bonus true damage equal to 12% of her maximum health. Hitting it closes it for six seconds, it can't reopen more often than once every three, and below 15% health it stops opening at all.

Two things follow from that. Standing five people on her front is a waste, because somebody needs to be behind her the entire fight. And the last stretch of her health bar has no shortcut in it, so plan for the final 15% to take as long as the first half did.

Frequently asked questions

What time do Voidgrubs spawn?

8:00, and they leave permanently at 14:45. They don't respawn.

What do Voidgrubs actually give you?

Structure damage. Each one grants the team a stack that burns enemy buildings, and all three add voidmites that attack turrets with you.

Why do the grubs keep healing?

Each death heals the survivors for 30% of their maximum health plus 30% of what they were missing. Spread your damage instead of focusing one.

Where is the Rift Herald's weak spot?

The eye on her back, worth 12% of her maximum health in bonus true damage. It closes for six seconds when hit and stops opening below 15% health.

Can you crowd control the Herald?

Only with stasis. Everything else, including stat reduction, does nothing to her or the grubs.

The short version

Take the grubs with help and finish them together, put somebody behind the Herald, and remember that both objectives pay in towers rather than gold. If your team has nobody who can use a structure advantage, the pit is worth less to you than the map thinks it is.

For the tenant who moves in afterward, our Baron Nashor guide covers the same pit at 20 minutes, and our turrets guide explains what all that structure damage is actually buying.
