LoL Range Guide: How Attack and Ability Reach Are Measured

LoL attack range guide preview

Your attack range is measured edge to edge, which quietly adds about 130 units to the number in your stat panel. Targeted spells don't get that bonus. It's the reason the two never feel like they match.

Range

How Reach Is Measured

Range and movement speed use the same unit, so they're directly comparable. A champion at 350 movement speed crosses a 550 attack range in about a second and a half. That's the arithmetic behind every "can I get out of this" decision you make.

What complicates it is that the game measures reach three different ways depending on what you cast.

Center to center, edge to edge, or somewhere between

A range can be measured center to center, edge to edge, or center to edge, and which applies depends on the kind of spell rather than on who cast it. Champions have real physical size (65 units of radius for most of them), so those three produce noticeably different distances from the same printed number.

Basic attacks measure edge to edge

Your attack range runs from the edge of your model to the edge of theirs, so both hitboxes get added onto the number in your stat panel. Most champions have a gameplay radius of 65 units, so an attack range printed as 550 actually reaches 680 center to center against another champion (550 plus two 65s).

That's a fifth more reach than the tooltip suggests, and it applies to both of you at once. Most "I was definitely out of range" moments are this rule, and the bigger the target the further away you can start hitting them.

The printed numbers themselves span a wider gap than most players picture. The shortest melee champions start at 125 and Caitlyn has the longest base range in the game at 650 (more than five times the reach, off the same starting gold). Senna, weirdly, sits outside the scale entirely: hers has no ceiling and keeps climbing all game.

Targeted spells don't get that bonus

What you're castingHow it measuresWhat that means
Basic attackEdge to edgeBoth hitboxes count, adding roughly 130 units of real reach
Targeted spellCenter to center, usuallyHitboxes don't help, so it lands from noticeably closer than an auto with the same listed range
SkillshotYour center to their edgeClips a big champion slightly earlier than a small one, but nothing like as much as an auto attack does

That middle row is the one that trips people up. A targeted ability with the same number as your attack range is genuinely shorter in practice, and no amount of muscle memory from auto attacking will fix the estimate.

Auras and vision measure from the center

Self-centered area effects use centered range, and so does line of sight. Neither cares how large anybody's model is.

The vision half is the useful one. What you can see is measured from the middle of you, so standing at the very edge of a bush doesn't extend your sight line the way it feels like it should.

Frequently asked questions

Is attack range measured from the center of the champion?

No, edge to edge, so both models' radii are added to the listed number.

Why does my ability have shorter range than my auto attack?

Targeted spells generally measure center to center, so they lose the roughly 130 units of hitbox that an auto attack gains.

Do bigger champions get hit from further away?

Yes, for basic attacks, and a bit for skillshots too.

Does standing at the edge of a bush see further?

No. Vision measures from your center.

Are range and movement speed comparable?

Directly. Both use game-distance units, so 350 speed crosses 550 range in about a second and a half.

The short version

Your auto attack reaches further than the number says and your point-and-click spell doesn't. Judge trades on that gap rather than on the stat panel, and remember that a large enemy is easier to auto than a small one standing in the same spot.
