Is Collector a Trap?

The Short Answer
Yes, mostly. It costs more than the item sitting right beside it on the shelf and hands you less attack damage for the privilege. What you buy with the difference doesn't pay you back.
This isn't a Jhin problem or a Graves problem, either. Lethality is an assassin stat, and the champions it's built for are already buying it (Zed has no other build in the data at all). The marksmen who keep reaching for it are paying for something their own range makes worthless.
What 3,000 Gold Actually Buys
Start with the price, because it settles most of this before any win rates come into it. The Collector costs 3,000 gold for 50 attack damage, 25% critical strike chance, 10 lethality, and an execute on targets under 5% health.
Hexoptics C44 costs 2,800 gold for 55 attack damage and the same 25% crit, and it carries a passive that adds up to 10% attack damage depending on how far away your target is, maxing out at 500 range.
So you pay 200 more gold, give up 5 attack damage, and give up a passive that pays a marksman on every auto. What comes back is the lethality and the execute. Everything below is really just asking whether those two are worth it, and for anyone fighting at range they aren't.
The Damage Math
Lethality converts into flat armor penetration on a scale that finishes at level 18. At level 16 the Collector's 10 lethality is worth 9.56 armor (not 10, which catches people out). That's the number doing all the work, and it's flat. A fixed subtraction from a total that climbs all game.
Here's one critical strike at level 16, with 200 attack damage before the item and enough crit chance to be critting every time. The Collector is the baseline and the other two are measured against it.

Infinity Edge wins by roughly a fifth at every single armor value, and it wins by more as the target gets tougher. Lord Dominik's starts out behind and passes the Collector somewhere around 60 armor, which almost everyone on the enemy team clears by the midgame anyway.
Hexoptics is the interesting one, because it splits in two. Stand right next to your target and it's actually behind the Collector, 364 against 383 into 40 armor. Back off to 500 range though and the passive flips it at every armor value on the chart: 401 against 383 into a squishy, 160 against 147 into a stacked tank. So it beats the Collector for precisely the champions who were never going to close the distance anyway.

The Execute Is Smaller Than It Sounds
Five percent of maximum health sounds like a real threshold until you put a number on it. A marksman at level 16 has somewhere around 2,200 health before items and lands near 2,400 with them. Five percent of that is about 120.
One critical strike from the table above does between 147 and 452. So the execute fires on somebody you were already killing with the back half of an auto you'd thrown anyway. It keys off your own damage too, which means a minion taking that last chunk out of someone hands you nothing. That happens more than you'd expect.
The bonus gold has the same shape to it. It pays you for kills, and kills already pay you.
Attack Speed Isn't the Dividing Line
This is where our own theory died. The rule you'll hear everywhere is that the Collector belongs on champions who can't use attack speed, and I went in believing it. It's a tidy idea. It doesn't survive thirty seconds with the actual roster.
The heaviest buyer in the game is Graves, who takes it in 77.3% of his recorded jungle games. His base attack speed is 0.475, the lowest of anybody here. So far the theory looks great.
Then there's Jhin, the other champion the rule always reaches for. His base attack speed is 0.625 and he gains none per level. Now look at Jinx and Ezreal, sitting on that identical 0.625. Across 47,444 and 41,661 recorded games between them, neither one buys the Collector. Not rarely. At all.
Same number, opposite behavior. Measure base attack speed against how often a champion actually buys this item across every role with enough games to count, and the relationship runs backwards from the theory. What Happens in Real Games
Builds recording the Collector across 26.17 and 26.18 come to 101,602 games at 51.29%. Everything else is 1,536,522 games at 55.71%.
One thing about that gap before you lean on it. Build data keeps the three lowest-numbered items a player finished with, and the Collector's ID happens to be high, so anyone who finishes with four or more legendaries alongside it drops out of the Collector column completely. Longer games are also the games people win. That pulls the raw gap wider than the item has earned.
So the number that matters isn't the size of the gap. It's the direction, and the direction is unanimous. Thirty-five champion roles have enough games on both sides to measure. Twenty-two are significantly worse with it. Zero are significantly better. The closest anyone comes to benefiting is noise on a sample of 151 games.
That last part is what the recording quirk can't explain away. Plenty of other high-numbered items carry the same handicap and still come out ahead. Immortal Shieldbow posts a gain. So do Death's Dance and Stridebreaker. The Collector doesn't, and neither does anything else on its shelf.
Who Lethality Is Actually For
This is the part I had to go back and fix. Every lethality item in the game measures badly in aggregate, and for a while I took that at face value. Then I looked at who's holding them.
Zed, Talon, Kha'Zix, Qiyana, Rengar and Pyke never record a build without lethality in it. Not one, across every combination the data keeps for them. Nobody's getting that wrong either. Lethality is how those champions are designed to work, and the six of them average a 47.8% win rate against 50.1% across every role in the game (they're difficult champions, and it shows). So the shelf reads as weak partly because the players carrying it were behind before they bought anything.
So the real test is the champions who have a genuine choice, and thirty of them have enough games on both sides to settle it. Zero come out ahead with lethality. Twenty-two come out significantly behind. Even the assassins in that group go the same way, with Naafiri dropping 8.8 points, and Nocturne and Shaco giving up 5.6 and 4.4.
The Collector's most frequent partner inside its own builds is Hubris, which is the worst-performing item in the entire set. Buying one tends to mean buying the other, and that pairing is how a lot of these games quietly go sideways.
Flat penetration solves an early problem. Armor totals climb all game and the 9.56 doesn't, so the stat stops mattering right around the time fights start deciding the result. That's fine for Zed, whose fight ended two seconds in anyway. For a marksman still autoing thirty seconds later, it's a dead stat you paid full price for.
When to Actually Buy It
There's a version of this item that's completely fine, and it's narrow. You want a lead already, against a team that still hasn't bought armor. Games that end before anyone finishes three items. That's a snowball purchase, and as snowball purchases go this one is genuinely good.
Where it goes wrong is as a marksman default. If you're buying it first because that's what the build page put in front of you, take Hexoptics C44 or go straight to Infinity Edge instead, and you'll have more damage for less gold in every fight after the fifteen minute mark.
The community rule about this item sorts champions by whether they care about attack speed. Range is what it should be sorting on. Lethality pays the champions who close the gap and finish someone inside a couple of seconds, which is why Zed builds nothing else, and it stops paying anyone who spends the fight at maximum range. The marksmen buying it most are the ones losing the most by doing it.
