Patch 26.15 gave her a straight scaling buff, and she is now the default bot lane pick for an enormous number of players. The results have not caught up to the popularity.

As of Patch 26.15, Kai'Sa picked up a direct buff to Second Skin [Passive] and shot up the solo queue tier list. She is the most-picked champion in the bot lane right now, and the lane she keeps walking into is full of mages.

FOTM Report

Kai'Sa Bot

Tier 1 · Patch 26.15

Patch 26.15 gave her a straight scaling buff, and she is now the default bot lane pick for an enormous number of players. The results have not caught up to the popularity.

As of Patch 26.15, Kai'Sa picked up a direct buff to Second Skin [Passive] and shot up the solo queue tier list. She is the most-picked champion in the bot lane right now, and the lane she keeps walking into is full of mages.

The buff itself is narrow and it is worth reading carefully, because it explains both why she climbed and why she stalled at Tier 1 instead of God Tier. Riot raised the top end of Caustic Wounds, the Plasma detonation on her passive, and raised the bonus each prior stack contributes. Both changes scale with level. Neither one does anything for her at level three. The stated reasoning was that a hyperscaling marksman with her range should be paid off later, and that is exactly what happened: her late game got better and the rest of her game did not move.

Support Synergies

Kai'Sa pairs with two different kinds of support for two different reasons, and the choice changes how you play the lane. Hard engage supports feed her passive directly, since allied immobilizing effects stack Plasma for her, so a single stun turns a normal trade into a detonation. Enchanters instead solve the problem her ultimate creates, which is that Killer Instinct [R] puts a 525 range marksman inside the enemy team with no way back out.

Pick the engage group when you want to win the lane outright. Pick the enchanter group when you expect to scale and want her late game to actually arrive.

Engage: Stack Plasma For Her

Leona

Leona

Leona chains three separate immobilizing effects across one all-in, and every one of them adds Plasma. She is the cleanest way to reach a detonation before the enemy support can react, and she gives Kai'Sa a target that cannot walk out of her range.

Thresh

Thresh

The hook sets up the trade and the lantern answers the part of Kai'Sa that gets her killed. Ulting onto a carry is a much easier decision when your support can pull you back out of it a second later.

Nautilus

Nautilus

Nautilus lands crowd control on almost every ability he casts, which suits a champion who wants stacks rather than one big burst. His passive root also triggers off his own basic attacks, so the Plasma keeps arriving through a long fight.

Enchanters: Keep Her Alive Long Enough To Scale

Lulu

Lulu

Lulu covers the dive. The shield and the health from her ultimate turn a bad Killer Instinct [R] into a survivable one, and the attack speed she hands out pushes Kai'Sa toward her Supercharge [E] evolution faster than items alone would.

Seraphine

Seraphine

Seraphine is one of the strongest supports in the game right now and she is the rare enchanter who also brings a real teamfight ultimate. The charm gives Kai'Sa the immobilizing effect she wants for Plasma, and the shielding and healing cover everything after it.

Soraka

Soraka

Soraka is the answer to a poke lane. Against the mage bot lanes described below, the lane is often decided by whether you can stay at full health long enough to reach your second item, and nobody does that better.

When to Pick Kai'Sa

Pick her when the draft is going long and you have a frontline. Her buff is a late game buff, so she wants a composition that can survive to the point where Caustic Wounds is doing meaningful damage on every stack, and she wants at least one teammate who gives her something to ultimate onto safely. A Kai'Sa on a team with no engage and no peel spends the whole game deciding not to use her ultimate.

She is also a reasonable blind pick, which is a real part of why so many players are on her. The evolution system means she can go attack damage, ability power, or attack speed based on what the enemy team actually looks like, so you are rarely punished for locking her in early. Avoid her when the enemy has two or more sources of point and click crowd control aimed at the back line, and avoid her when you need lane pressure immediately, because nothing in this patch made her stronger before level nine.

How It Works

A Bigger Detonation

Second Skin [Passive] stacks Plasma on basic attacks and pops it as bonus magic damage once it reaches the threshold. Patch 26.15 raised both the top end of that damage and the amount each prior stack adds, and both numbers scale with level. In practice that means a longer fight now pays out noticeably more than it did last patch, while a short skirmish plays out roughly the same.

One Build Covers Everything

Living Weapon upgrades Icathian Rain [Q], Void Seeker [W], and Supercharge [E] as she buys bonus attack damage, ability power, and attack speed respectively. Kraken Slayer into Guinsoo's Rageblade into Nashor's Tooth hits all three categories on the way through, which is why one build path answers so many different drafts. From there the build commits to ability power, since Zhonya's Hourglass and Rabadon's Deathcap both scale the same passive damage that Patch 26.15 buffed.

An Escape That Doubles As Engage

Killer Instinct [R] is the reason she survives games she has no business surviving. It is a long dash to any marked enemy champion, so a Void Seeker [W] landed on a target across the wall is both a chase and a way out. Marking before you commit is the whole skill of the champion.

The Mage Meta She Is Walking Into

The bot lane is not a marksman lane at the moment, and this is the single biggest reason her results look flat next to her popularity. Mages are producing better outcomes down there than most of the marksmen are. Seraphine, Xerath, Ziggs, and Hwei all show up as genuinely strong bot lane picks this patch, and none of them are playing the game Kai'Sa wants to play.

Mid lane pushes in the same direction. Malzahar leads the role ahead of Viktor and Xerath, with control mages filling most of the tier below them. Add it up and the average game has more magic damage, more point and click crowd control, and more range on the enemy team than it did two patches ago.

That combination is specifically bad for a 525 range marksman whose damage requires her to stand in auto attack range and stack. Artillery mages poke her off the wave before Plasma ever detonates. Control mages hold the exact tools that punish Killer Instinct [R], since a dash into a Malzahar ultimate or a Viktor gravity field is not a play, it is a death. And an enemy team stacked with ability power drags her toward magic resist in a build where every item slot is already promised to an evolution threshold.

There is an opening in it, though, and it is worth naming. Mage bot lanes are squishy, they run out of mana, and mage supports bring almost no peel. If you take the engage support route and win the first two levels, that lane folds hard. The mage meta makes Kai'Sa worse on average and better in the specific games where you get to fight early.

Potential Pitfalls

The Buff Landed on the Wrong End of the Curve

Everything Patch 26.15 gave her scales with level, which means her weakest phase got no help at all. She still has a mediocre level one, she still has to survive a lane against champions who out-range her, and she still needs two items before her damage feels real. If you are picking her because she got buffed, understand that the buff arrives around twenty minutes.

Three Thresholds, Not Enough Slots

The evolution system reads as flexible and behaves as rigid. Each Living Weapon upgrade needs a real investment in one stat, so chasing all three leaves you thin on every one of them, and buying defensively delays whichever evolution you were building toward. Commit to two evolutions for the game rather than trying to collect the set.

Your Ultimate Is Only as Good as Your Frontline

Killer Instinct [R] puts you in the middle of the enemy team, and the shield it grants does not last long enough to matter if nobody follows. Without engage or peel around you, the correct play is usually to not press it, which turns her into a short range marksman with an unused button. This is a large part of why the average game with her in it looks so ordinary compared to what she does in a good one.

Conclusions

Kai'Sa is a strong pick this patch and she is nowhere near the free win her buff made her look like on day one. She is genuinely better than she was, the improvement is real, and it is concentrated entirely in the part of the game a lot of solo queue matches never reach.

If you have a frontline, a support who can either engage for you or keep you standing, and the patience to play for your second and third items, she is one of the better bot laners available. If you are locking her in every game because everyone else is, expect the mage lanes to keep taking chunks out of you.

Suggested Tier: Tier 1
