Weird Picks #88: Kleptomancy Draven

Draven's one of those champions that seems like just about anything works on him as long as you can get a damage item or two. As a result, players are taking that too a new extreme by picking up Kleptomancy as their keystone mastery for an accelerated rush to their items.

Some players are even starting with Ancient Coin to maximize their gold generation potential, but thats probably a bit excessive and may lead to some awkward early game all-in plays. Check out the details below!

Introduction

Draven's one of those champions that seems like just about anything works on him as long as you can get a damage item or two. As a result, players are taking that too a new extreme by picking up Kleptomancy as their keystone mastery for an accelerated rush to their items.

Some players are even starting with Ancient Coin to maximize their gold generation potential, but thats probably a bit excessive and may lead to some awkward early game all-in plays. Check out the details below!

How to Play
Abilities: Q, W, E then prioritize R > Q > W > E
Summoner Spells: Flash + Heal
Starting Items: Doran Blade + Health Potions
Core Items: Bloodthirster, Berserker's Greaves, Statikk Shiv, Infinity Edge, Rapid Firecannon, Guardian Angel

Rune Setup

Inspiration Tree
  • Kleptomancy this is the core rune that gives this build its power. Despite the removal of the extra range buff on spell cast, it's still very good for Draven.
  • Perfect Timing the other two runes on this level are not all that valuable for Draven, but you could swap for biscuits if you really just love having that one.
  • Future's Market is going to be your optimal item here as Draven generally wants to pick up his boots sooner to help with his chase potential.
  • Cosmic Insight is the only rune that makes sense on this tier.
Sorcery Tree
  • Manaflow Band provides Draven with the ability to almost never run out of mana, giving him the maximum mobility he can muster without buying mana items.
  • Celerity synergizes incredibly well with Draven's skillset, and the rest are simply not as good.
You could potentially also go Domination or Precision, but as Draven will be rushing a Bloodthirster both trees lose most of their value.

Why It Works

Passive Synergy
Draven's passive provides him with a massive amount of extra gold. By popping Kleptomancy onto him as well, he gains twice as much gold generation and results in twice as many items to kill enemy carries with.

Excellent Scaling
Draven's axes scale all the way up to 105% bonus AD damage, which means that EVERY item is a massive power spike for him. This means that his first BF Sword should equate to his first kill, allowing him to snowball quickly from there if he gets it before the enemy laners.

Great Trading Damage
Draven's core laning power comes from his ability to pop his W, throw a quick axe for a trade and back right out (unless he's going for the kill). As a point-and-click tactic, this is very difficult to avoid. By using the Kleptomancy rune, he gets an added bonus every time he does his usual pattern of attack.

Potential Pitfalls

Weaker Early Game
Players that enjoy all-in plays level one or two may still find success simply because they're playing Draven, but otherwise this rune setup obviously makes you weaker in the early game. As a result, otherwise winning 2v2 match-ups can end up as a losing one if you decide to all-in too early.

Weaker Late Game
Similarly, this rune setup relies on massive gold advantages mid-game to be effective. After everyone in the game has six items, this version of Draven tends to feel much weaker without a dedicated offensive keystone.

Conclusions

Although this rune setup tends to fall off if the game drags on too long, Draven was always more of a mid-game champion anyway. As a result, I think this rune setup is actually optimal on Draven and works quite well.

Suggested Tier: Tier 1
