Top Ways Flash Should Be Used

Good evening summoners, and welcome to the latest and greatest in the Top series! For this week's episode, let's check out the most popular summoner spell in the game, Flash. Ever since you got it way back as a newbie playing the game, most of you probably never took it off your bar, about half of you opting for the D key and the other half opting for the F key.

However, although this spell is easy to press, (especially while you're sitting in the fountain) mastering it tends to be a bit more difficult. Check out these tips below to get you well on your way to mastering flash!

Introduction

Good evening summoners, and welcome to the latest and greatest in the Top series! For this week's episode, let's check out the most popular summoner spell in the game, Flash. Ever since you got it way back as a newbie playing the game, most of you probably never took it off your bar, about half of you opting for the D key and the other half opting for the F key.

However, although this spell is easy to press, (especially while you're sitting in the fountain) mastering it tends to be a bit more difficult. Check out these tips below to get you well on your way to mastering flash!

Dodge Semi-Targeted Spells

A lot of spells are targeted from the viewpoint of the offensive player. It's hard to miss, and after locking onto a target, you expect it to hit. But did you know a lot of these spells are actually dodgeable with Flash?

Example Spells:

  • Jayce (Q) - To the Skies! (Melee)
  • Nidalee (W) - Pounce (With Hunt Bonus)
  • Rengar (Passive) - Unseen Predator
  • Lee Sin (Q) - Resonating Strike [This one is really hard, but proven possible by Faker]

Dodge Skillshots

This one's a little more obvious, a lot of people tend to get hit, lose a lot of health, and then flash. However if you can flash skillshots before they land, they can easily turn the tide of a battle. Here's a list of my favorite ones:
  • Graves (Q) - Buckshot
  • Malphite (R) - Unstoppable Force
  • Amumu (R) - Curse of the Sad Mummy
  • Vladimir (R) - Hemoplague
  • Leblanc (W) - Distortion

"Double" Flash Length Over Ledges

Everyone knows you can flash over ledges. Everyone also knows that there are ledges that you seem to be able to flash over sometimes, and sometimes faceplant real hard into the wall.

The rule is, if you can flash a distance at least 50% over the ledge in a straight line, you'll reach the other side. This rule also works for flash-like skills, such as Fiddlesticks ultimate or Ezreal E. This does not work on dashes like Shen or Graves.

Securing a Kill

Oftentimes, players flash in order to try and chase down enemy players, even when they can't burst them down and all that results is that they both use flash. This isn't the right way to do it. As a net zero maneuver, this doesn't gain you any particular advantage.

However, if you save your flash for when you have enough burst to instantly kill the enemy player, not only is it much more likely that you secure a kill, but also possible that they die while your projectile is in the air, wasting their flash anyway.

Block Projectiles

Similar to how flash should only be used offensively if it secures the kill instantly, flash should also only be used defensively if if it saves an ally instantly as well. Blocking certain skillshots can result in insanely high benefits to your team, such as:
  • Caitlyn (R) - Ace in the Hole
  • Nidalee (Q) - Javelin Toss
  • Blitzcrank (Q) - Rocket Grab

Modifying Spell Trajectory

This one's extremely beneficial. With this trick, you can flash AFTER casting the spell, mid-air, to achieve far better results than otherwise possible. Examples include:

  • Jarvan's E-Q combo
  • Shen's Taunt
  • Lee Sin's Q/W/R

With all of the above and more, you can first cast the spell, and then flash to modify the trajectory with minimal lag time and far more sneakiness.
