Viktor Counters: Best Counter Picks and Tips

Viktor counter guide preview

Viktor doesn't need to kill you in lane. He needs the lane to belong to him, and Gravity Field [W] takes it one circle at a time.

Laning against Viktor is a slow eviction. There's a circle where you can't stand, a line you can't cross to farm, and a storm that follows you afterward. He can also be picked up bot lane now, which means twice as many players get to learn this the hard way. The good news is that he has no dash, no blink and no escape, and every answer to him starts there.

Laning against Viktor is a slow eviction. There's a circle you can't stand in, a line you can't cross to farm, and a storm that follows you home afterward. He gets played bot lane as well as mid, which means twice as many players get to learn this the hard way, and both roles are rated on our solo queue tier list rather than being a gimmick. The good news hasn't changed in years: he has no dash, no blink and no escape, and every real answer to him starts there.

What a Counter Needs
  • A way to reach him that doesn't involve walking through Gravity Field [W]
  • Magic resist early, because there's no physical damage in his kit to punish it
  • The patience to let Arcane Storm [R] expire rather than fighting inside it

Viktor Overview

Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous

  • Gravity Field [W] slows everything inside it and then stuns anyone who stays too long, which makes it a zoning tool first and a kill setup second.
  • Glorious Evolution [Passive] permanently upgrades an ability for every 100 Hex Fragments. Falling behind doesn't reset him, because every augment he's already bought stays bought.
  • Hextech Ray [E] pushes the wave and pokes you in the same cast, and the augmented version leaves an explosion behind the line.
  • Arcane Storm [R] is steerable. Walking away from it isn't a plan, because he simply steers it after you.
  • Siphon Power [Q] shields him and empowers his next attack, so poking him back genuinely costs you more than it costs him.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • He has no mobility whatsoever. Not a dash, not a blink, not a movement ability. Everything he owns is a zone he has to stand near.
  • Gravity Field [W] is telegraphed. It has a visible cast and a wind-up, and it only stuns people who choose to stay inside it.
  • Augments need kills and last hits. Deny the wave and shove him under tower, and the upgrade timeline he's counting on slips by minutes.
  • Arcane Storm [R] is a 120 second cooldown at rank 1. Fights taken while it's down are fights against a mage with no burst window.
  • He's squishy and slow. Anyone who actually reaches him kills him, and he has nothing to say about it once they're there.

Countering Viktor

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Viktor comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Cross the zone, don't wait it out. Gravity Field [W] punishes standing still. A champion who's already committed to the gap close takes the slow and nothing else.
  • Buy magic resist earlier than feels right. There's no physical damage in his kit at all, so there's no downside to a lopsided defensive build against him.
  • Deny the augments. Every last hit he misses is time added to his upgrade timer, and shoving into him is safer than it looks because he can't punish it.
  • Fight when the storm is down. His teamfight is Arcane Storm [R]. Without it he's a mage with a slow zone and a shield.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Viktor Matchup

Farm from the far side of the wave. Hextech Ray [E] is a line, and standing at the outer edge of the minions turns his best poke tool into a wave clear button.

Never walk through Gravity Field [W] to reach a minion. That's the trade he's actually playing for, and the CS isn't worth the follow-up.

Ping your jungler early rather than late. Viktor can't escape a gank, at all, and a level 4 visit does more to this lane than anything you can do alone.

Buy a Null-Magic Mantle or a Negatron Cloak on your second back if the lane is going badly. His entire poke pattern stops working sooner than you'd expect once magic resist enters the equation.

Best Viktor Counters

Viktor loses to three separate things: being untouchable when he casts, being unkillable when he lands it, and being reached before any of it matters.

Fizz champion icon

Fizz Untargetable on the Way In

Playful / Trickster [E] lifts Fizz onto his spear and makes him untargetable, which turns Siphon Power [Q] and any follow-up into a wasted cast. It also repositions him, so the same button that dodges the poke also carries him out of a Gravity Field [W] he shouldn't have been standing in.

Once he's close, the matchup stops being a lane. Urchin Strike [Q] passes through Viktor and applies on-hit damage, Seastone Trident [W] keeps ticking after the trade ends, and Chum the Waters [R] is a knockup on a champion with no dash to break the tether. Nimble Fighter [Passive]'s flat damage reduction quietly wins him the poke war on top of all of it.

Katarina champion icon

Katarina Resets Straight Through Him

Shunpo [E] is a blink to any unit within 725 units, including minions and her own daggers, which means the wave Viktor uses as a wall is the exact thing she uses as a ladder. She doesn't have to cross the zone on foot, so most of what Gravity Field [W] is for stops applying.

She also has no mana. Viktor's lane plan is a war of poke and shields, and Katarina can simply keep taking short trades until one of them lands properly. Voracity [Passive] then means the one kill she does get on him tends to be the last quiet minute of that game.

Galio champion icon

Galio Built for Magic Damage

Shield of Durand [W] passively gives Galio a magic shield when he hasn't taken damage recently, and charging it reduces incoming magic damage on top. Viktor's kit contains no physical damage at all, so Galio is holding a defensive tool that answers 100% of what's being thrown at him.

The offensive half is just as bad for Viktor. Justice Punch [E] knocks up the first champion it reaches, Shield of Durand [W] taunts on release, and Winds of War [Q] covers the ground Viktor needs to stand on. Against a mage with no dash, a knockup into a taunt isn't a skirmish, it's a result.

Itemizing Against Viktor

Every point of damage Viktor deals is magic, so nothing about a lopsided magic resist build costs you anything in this matchup:

Mercury's Treads Banshee's Veil Zhonya's Hourglass Force of Nature

Mercury's Treads shortens the Gravity Field [W] stun that sets up everything else. Banshee's Veil eats one cast outright, and the one it eats is usually the one that mattered. Zhonya's Hourglass answers Arcane Storm [R] by making the burst arrive at nobody, and Force of Nature gives frontliners the move speed to close the gap and the stacking resistance to survive standing in the storm while they do it.
