The whole Morgana matchup is one question, asked over and over: does Dark Binding land? Everything infuriating about her follows from the answer.
A 1250 unit root on a 10 second cooldown decides games at every rank where players stand still. Higher up, they stop standing still, and Morgana quietly turns into a normal support.

How to Beat Morgana
The whole Morgana matchup is one question, asked over and over: does Dark Binding land? Everything infuriating about her follows from the answer.
Dark Binding is a 1250 unit skillshot with a 10 second cooldown and a root long enough to be a death sentence, and losing to it repeatedly is genuinely demoralising. Everything about beating Morgana comes back to that one ability: where it can reach you, what it goes through, and what happens in the two seconds after she misses.
- A disengage tool, because Soul Shackles needs her to stay close
- Enough sustain that Tormented Shadow chip never adds up
- Zone control of your own, since hers is what wins her the lane
Morgana Overview
Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous
- Dark Binding [Q] reaches 1250 units and roots for a long duration on a flat 10 second cooldown at every rank. One landed root at level 2 wins the lane outright.
- Black Shield [E] is a magic shield that prevents every disabling and immobilizing effect until it breaks, which can blank an entire engage from the other team.
- Tormented Shadow [W] deals more damage the lower your health is and refunds part of its own cooldown every time Soul Siphon heals her, so her poke gets faster as the lane goes on.
- Soul Shackles [R] chains everyone nearby, slows them, and stuns anyone who fails to break the chains, while giving her a large movement speed boost during the cast to chase them down.
- Soul Siphon heals her whenever she damages champions or large minions, which means she wins most poke wars without spending anything.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- Dark Binding is a slow, wide, easily read skillshot. Every part of her kit is built on landing it, and it is on a 10 second cooldown, so a miss is a full window of nothing.
- She has no dash and no blink. A Morgana who steps up for a Tormented Shadow has no way to get back out.
- Soul Shackles requires her to stay inside 625 units for three seconds. Any knockback, displacement, or hard disengage cancels the stun entirely.
- Black Shield is on a 26 second cooldown at rank 1, and once it breaks it stops preventing crowd control, so baiting it out is genuinely worth doing.
- Her damage is entirely magic, which means magic resist is a stat check she cannot build around.
Countering Morgana
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Morgana comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Break the chains. Soul Shackles only stuns if she holds range for three seconds, so any knockback or displacement turns her ultimate into a slow.
- Out-sustain the poke. Tormented Shadow scales off your missing health, so healing between waves does not just restore health, it lowers her damage.
- Win the zoning war instead of dodging it. She controls ground with one zone on a 12 second cooldown, and champions who control more ground than that take the lane.
- Bait Black Shield before you commit. Any cheap ability spent to break the shield makes her follow-up crowd control land normally.
If you are already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Morgana Matchup
Stand behind a minion whenever you are inside 1250 units of her. Dark Binding stops on the first enemy it hits, so a single caster minion between you is a full answer to her only real threat.
Buy magic resist before your second component. Her whole kit is magic damage, and Tormented Shadow chip is what sets up every root she lands.
Do not step into the Tormented Shadow zone to trade. That damage is what feeds Soul Siphon, which is what refunds her cooldown, which is what lets her do it again.
Track Black Shield rather than Dark Binding. A Morgana without her shield up is a 450 attack range champion with no mobility standing in a lane she has been pushing.
Best Morgana Counters
Each of these three attacks a different half of her kit: the ultimate, the poke war, and the ground control. All three are support picks.
Janna Breaks the Chains
Janna is the most direct answer to the scariest part of Morgana's kit. Soul Shackles only converts into a stun if Morgana keeps everyone inside 625 units for the full three second timer, and Monsoon knocks every nearby enemy back the instant it is cast. The chains break, the stun never happens, and Morgana has spent a 120 second cooldown for a slow.
The lane before that goes just as well. Howling Gale knocks up along its whole path from 1075 units, which is longer than Morgana's root and much harder to walk around, and Eye Of The Storm refunds part of its own cooldown every time Janna impairs an enemy's movement. Zephyr slows Morgana from anywhere on the screen while Tailwind keeps Janna ghosted and faster than a champion with no dash.
Senna Out-trades the Poke
Senna beats Morgana by undoing her one source of lane pressure. Piercing Darkness fires through an ally, damages Morgana, and heals allied champions in the same cast, and every basic attack Senna lands reduces its cooldown by a second. Tormented Shadow chip that gets healed back for free stops being poke and starts being wasted mana.
Absolution then makes the matchup worse over time, because Senna's attack range grows all game while Morgana stays at 450. Curse of the Black Mist is the underrated part: it makes Senna and any ally who passes through unselectable and camouflaged, which is a real problem for a champion who needs to land a slow 1250 unit skillshot to do anything.
Zyra Out-zones Her
Zyra wins the fight Morgana is actually trying to have. Morgana's ground control is one zone on a 12 second cooldown. Zyra's is a seed field that regenerates on its own, and every seed she grows becomes a Thorn Spitter with 575 range or a Vine Lasher whose attacks stack slows on whatever walks in.
Grasping Roots reaches 1100 units and roots in a line, so Zyra has a comparable answer to Dark Binding on a similar cooldown while also growing plants along its path. Stranglethorns then knocks up everything in a 700 unit area and enrages every plant inside it, which is a far better teamfight than a self-centered channel Morgana has to survive to finish.
Itemizing Against Morgana
Morgana has no physical damage in her kit at all, and her whole game is one long root, so magic resist and tenacity cover almost everything:
Mercury's Treads cuts the Dark Binding root duration directly, Banshee's Veil eats the root before it ever lands, Mikael's Blessing removes it from an ally and heals them in the same cast, and Kaenic Rookern's magic shield is the single best answer to a champion whose only damage pattern is magic chip that scales off missing health.
