Mel Counters | Best Counter Champions Picks and Strategy to Beat Mel

Mel counter guide preview

Mel is thoroughly unpleasant to be hit by and she still does not win games, which is the single most useful thing to know before you queue into her.

That gap is the whole story of this matchup. Players dread Mel because her kit is miserable to be hit by, not because she is winning games, and the champions that punish her do it by attacking the parts of her kit she cannot change.

How to Beat Mel

Matchup Guide · Patch 26.14 · 3 Counter Picks

Mel is thoroughly unpleasant to be hit by and her counter skill is a major source of frustration for most champions.

There is a specific unfairness to Mel that is worth naming: she is the only champion who punishes you for playing the lane correctly. You land your ability, and it comes back at you. That is not a matchup you can out-execute, it is one you have to plan around, because Rebuttal turns your own poke into her damage and Golden Eclipse cashes in every point of chip damage she has landed all fight.

What a Counter Needs
  • Range past 1000 units, which is the furthest her kit reaches
  • Damage that Rebuttal cannot reflect, or enough patience to wait it out
  • A way to punish a champion with no dash and no blink

Mel Overview

Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous

  • Rebuttal [W] reflects enemy champion projectiles back at whoever fired them, blocks the damage entirely, shields her, and hands her movement speed on top of it. Poking her while it is up feeds her.
  • Searing Brilliance stacks Overwhelm on you infinitely, and once the stack total is high enough her damage executes you outright rather than just hurting.
  • Golden Eclipse [R] ignores range completely. Every enemy carrying Overwhelm takes damage scaled off their stack count no matter where they are standing on the map.
  • Solar Snare [E] roots at the center and leaves a slowing, ticking zone behind it, which turns a single landed ability into a long window of free damage.
  • Radiant Volley [Q] is a repeated area explosion on a cooldown that drops to 6 seconds, so she can hold a lane and stack Overwhelm without ever stepping forward.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • She has no dash and no blink. Rebuttal's movement speed is the entire escape package, and it is on a 38 second cooldown at rank 1.
  • Rebuttal only reflects projectiles. Beams, ground zones, melee strikes, and pets all pass straight through it, which makes her defensive cooldown dead weight against the right champion.
  • Golden Eclipse needs an Overwhelm target to cast. No stacks on anyone means no ultimate, so shutting down her chip damage shuts down her burst.
  • Her range caps at 1000 units. Anything that shoots further gets a free trade, and she has no tool for closing that gap.
  • Her damage depends entirely on what you give her. A lane that stops feeding Rebuttal is a lane where she has very little of her own, so a calm lane usually wins on its own.

Countering Mel

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Mel comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Out-range her. Solar Snare and Radiant Volley both cap at 1000 units. Sit past that line and she has no answer at all.
  • Bring damage Rebuttal cannot send back. Sustained beams, black holes, ground effects, and melee attacks all ignore the reflect, which turns her best defensive tool into a 38 second cooldown she wasted.
  • Deny the Overwhelm stacks. Golden Eclipse scales off stacks and cannot be cast without a target carrying them, so avoiding the chip damage removes her ultimate.
  • Punish the immobility. Any cage, root, pull, or dive that lands on her is close to unanswerable, because she cannot dash out of it.

If you are already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Mel Matchup

Respect the 38 second Rebuttal cooldown rather than the ability itself. Once she uses it, you have a very long window where every projectile you throw connects normally.

Break line of sight and back off when your Overwhelm stacks get high. Her ultimate is global, so distance does not save you, but letting the stacks decay does.

Take magic resist earlier than feels comfortable. Her entire kit is magic damage, so there is no physical threat to punish a lopsided defensive build.

Do not trade into her while standing in the Solar Snare zone. The ticking damage there is what builds her stacks, and stepping out of it costs you nothing.

Best Mel Counters

These three beat Mel in three different ways, and each one attacks a separate part of her kit rather than just out-statting her.

Xerath champion icon

Xerath Out-ranges Her

Xerath is the cleanest answer to Mel because the matchup is decided by a number she cannot change. Shocking Orb reaches 1050 units, Arcanopulse stretches further the longer he charges it, and Rite of the Arcane fires from 5000 units away. Mel's longest ability is 1000 units. He simply gets to trade and she does not.

The other half of it is that Xerath punishes her positioning rather than her health bar. Every time she steps up to cast Radiant Volley, she is inside a stun she cannot dash out of. He also plays both mid and bot lane at S tier this patch, so he is available wherever you happen to be meeting her.

Aurelion Sol champion icon

Aurelion Sol Nothing to Reflect

Aurelion Sol is the cleanest answer to Mel in the mid lane, because Rebuttal has nothing to do against him. Breath of Light is a sustained beam rather than a projectile, and Singularity is a black hole on the ground. Neither one gets sent back, so her big defensive cooldown does nothing except shield her for a moment.

Singularity is also close to unfair against a champion with no dash. It drags enemies toward the center and executes anyone below the health threshold once they are in it, and Mel's only way out is walking. Astral Flight then lets him poke from 1500 units in the air, well outside anything she can answer.

Nilah champion icon

Nilah Ignores the Damage Type

Nilah is the bot lane pick for this, and Jubilant Veil is why. It cuts incoming magic damage by a large flat percentage, dodges attacks, ghosts her through units, and she can share all of it with her own support by touching them. Mel's kit is 100% magic damage, so that one button turns a full combo into chip.

Formless Blade then heals Nilah for a share of the damage she deals to champions and converts the overheal into a shield, which undoes the Overwhelm stacking that Golden Eclipse depends on. Apotheosis finishes it by pulling Mel in from 400 units, and she has no dash to leave with.

Itemizing Against Mel

Mel deals no physical damage whatsoever, so magic resist is a pure stat check here with no downside at all:

Mercury's Treads Banshee's Veil Maw of Malmortius Kaenic Rookern

Mercury's Treads shortens the Solar Snare root, Banshee's Veil eats the Solar Snare outright before a fight starts, Maw of Malmortius gives an attack damage carry magic resist plus a shield exactly when her burst lands, and Kaenic Rookern's magic shield scales off maximum health, which makes it the best single answer to her chip damage pattern.
