Killing Katarina once isn't a result. Letting her kill anyone once is, because one kill starts the chain.
Katarina is fine right up until she isn't. One pick, the cooldowns come back, and the fight that was even becomes a highlight reel. Being told to just not die isn't useful advice (everyone in the lane already knows that part). Knowing that her biggest damage source is a channel that any interrupt cancels, on the other hand, is.

How to Beat Katarina
Killing Katarina once isn't a result. Letting her kill anyone once is, because one kill starts the chain.
Katarina is fine right up until she isn't. One pick, her cooldowns come back, and the fight that was even a second ago becomes a highlight reel. She's a standing name in the mid lane section of our solo queue tier list, and that snowball is why. Being told to simply not die isn't useful advice (everyone in the lane already knows that part). Knowing that her largest damage source is a channel that any interrupt cancels, on the other hand, is.
- One reliable interrupt for Death Lotus [R], which is most of her damage in a fight
- Early magic resist, because her whole burst is magic and it's tuned to exactly your health bar
- Enough level 1 to 5 pressure to matter before the reset engine starts
Katarina Overview
Strengths: What Makes Her Dangerous
- One pick becomes four. Every kill on somebody she recently damaged cuts most of the time off her remaining cooldowns, and the fight never gets a chance to reset.
- Her positioning has almost no rules. Shunpo [E] blinks to any unit inside 725 units, minions and her own daggers included.
- Her escape and her engage are the same setup, because the dagger she plants to run is also the dagger she arrives on.
- She uses no mana and no energy. There's no resource bar to punish and no cost to trying something that doesn't work.
- Grouping isn't automatically safe. Her ultimate hits the three nearest champions at once and hits all of them hard.
Weaknesses: Where You Get In
- Death Lotus [R] is a channel. Any interrupt at all ends it, and it's the majority of her damage in a real fight.
- Her combo needs a dagger on the ground. Take the dagger's position away, by moving or by killing what it landed on, and the sequence falls apart.
- She's squishy and she builds squishy. There's no version of the champion that survives being caught out.
- Early magic resist hits her unusually hard. Every point of her damage is magic and her burst is tuned to just barely be enough.
- Levels 1 through 5 are bad for her. She has no reset engine yet and nothing to punish a trade with.
Countering Katarina
Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Katarina comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:
- Hold one interrupt for the channel. A stun, a knockup, a silence or a suppression all end Death Lotus [R], and any of them turns her team fight into nothing.
- Deny the dagger. Her blink targets units and daggers. Moving out of the dagger's radius costs nothing and removes half her combo.
- Buy magic resist before damage if you're being killed. Her burst is calculated against your health bar and a single Null-Magic Mantle changes the arithmetic.
- Fight before level 6. There's no reset engine yet, and every plate and every level she loses in that stretch matters more than usual.
If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:
Playing a Bad Katarina Matchup
Stand apart from your team when her ultimate is up. Death Lotus [R] hits the three nearest champions, and spacing turns the fight-winning cast into a single target one.
Don't chase the first kill she gets. The Voracity [Passive] reset means the follow-up is already coming, and disengaging costs you far less than being the second name on the list.
Kill the minion the dagger landed on if you can. It only takes a bit of attention, and it removes a blink she was planning to use.
Play the mid lane wave short. She wants a long lane to Shunpo [E] through and a wave to reset off, and neither exists when the minions are sitting next to your tower.
Best Katarina Counters
Three answers to a reset assassin: interrupt her, survive her, or make sure she never gets the first kill in the first place.
Syndra Interrupts Death Lotus
Scatter the Weak [E] stuns anything a Dark Sphere [Q] is knocked into, and Syndra can place the sphere before Katarina has committed. That means the interrupt is already set up when Death Lotus [R] starts rather than being a reaction, which is the difference between canceling it and eating it.
Unleashed Power [R] is also point and click, so all of Katarina's mobility does nothing to prevent it. Syndra wins the lane phase on range as well, since Dark Sphere [Q] stores charges and Katarina has to walk into the exact area those charges are covering to do anything at all.
Anivia Refuses to Stay Dead
Rebirth [Passive] means Katarina's all-in usually fails on the first attempt, and a failed all-in against a champion with no mana bar is still a failed all-in with cooldowns spent. She has to kill Anivia twice in one window, and Death Lotus [R] doesn't last that long.
Crystallize [W] is the positional answer. A wall dropped between Katarina and her dagger cuts the blink she was relying on, and Flash Frost [Q] stuns her out of the channel from 1075 units. Glacial Storm [R] then covers the ground she needs to stand on to do damage at all.
Twisted Fate Takes the Map Away
Gold Card (Pick a Card [W] locked on gold) is a point-and-click stun and the most reliable Death Lotus [R] interrupt in the mid lane pool. Katarina can't dodge it, can't blink out of the stun once it's applied, and can't afford to have the channel canceled.
Destiny [R] is the wider answer. Katarina wants to snowball a lane and then a map, and Twisted Fate simply gets to the other lanes first with a global reveal attached. Wild Cards [Q] also shoves the wave hard, which denies her the minions she'd otherwise be blinking through.
Itemizing Against Katarina
Katarina's damage is entirely magic and it arrives in one very short window, most of it from a channel:
Zhonya's Hourglass is close to a hard counter, because going into stasis in the middle of Death Lotus [R] removes the damage and wastes the reset she was playing for. Hexdrinker is the cheap early version of the same idea. Mercury's Treads cuts whatever crowd control set her up, and Banshee's Veil blocks the Bouncing Blade [Q] that starts the combo.
