Jayce Counters: Best Counter Picks and Tips

Jayce counter guide preview

Jayce takes 40% of your health before you've last-hit a single minion, and there's no version of that trade where you got to do anything back.

The Jayce lane isn't a fight, it's an eviction notice. He pokes, he steps back, and the wave you needed is sitting in a place you can't stand. What makes it survivable is that he has no dash, no escape, and roughly one button to keep you off him once you're actually there.

The Jayce lane isn't a fight, it's an eviction notice. He pokes, steps back, and the wave you needed sits in a place you can't stand. How he's rated on our solo queue tier list depends almost entirely on who's holding the hammer, and he can be picked up mid and jungle on top of top lane. What makes it survivable is that he has no dash, no escape, and roughly one button to keep you off him once you actually get there.

What a Counter Needs
  • Sustain or a shield that turns his poke into something other than permanent lost health
  • A gap closer that works through a minion wave, since walking at him openly is what he wants
  • The willingness to give up CS early rather than trade for it

Jayce Overview

Strengths: What Makes Him Dangerous

  • Shock Blast through Acceleration Gate gains range, speed and damage, and the resulting poke comfortably out-reaches every melee top laner in the game.
  • Poking and retreating happen on the same input, because swapping weapons hands him free move speed every time he does it.
  • Thundering Blow answers most gap closers the moment they land, dealing magic damage and knocking you straight back out of range.
  • Mercury Cannon shreds armor and magic resist on his first attack after the swap, so the burst behind it lands harder than the tooltip suggests.
  • Backing off isn't automatically safe either. He can drop a burst of maximum attack speed in ranged form and finish what the poke started.

Weaknesses: Where You Get In

  • He has no dash and no escape. Hextech Capacitor [Passive] is a move speed buff, not a gap closer, and it doesn't save him from anything that's already arrived.
  • He's extremely squishy for a top laner. That doesn't change with items, because his build is damage on damage.
  • The full poke combo is telegraphed. Acceleration Gate has to go down first, and that tells you exactly where the Shock Blast is coming from.
  • Mana. Missed Shock Blasts are expensive and he uses a lot of them.
  • Once you're on him he has one knockback. After Thundering Blow is used, there's nothing left in the kit that creates distance.

Countering Jayce

Based on the strengths and weaknesses above, beating Jayce comes down to champions who can accomplish at least one of the following:

  • Convert the poke into something. A shield that scales with damage taken, real health regeneration, or lifesteal all turn a poke lane into a farming lane.
  • Walk through the wave, not around it. Shock Blast is a line and minions are cover. The straight path is the one he's aiming at.
  • Bait Thundering Blow. It's his only disengage. Step in once, take the knockback, and step in again while it's down.
  • Give up early CS deliberately. Losing 15 minions to stay at full health is a much better trade than losing 15 minions and half a health bar anyway.

If you're already locked into the matchup without any of those tools, these strategies still work:

Playing a Bad Jayce Matchup

Stand behind the wave at all times, even when it costs you last hits. His entire lane is built on the assumption that you'll step forward for a cannon minion.

Buy Doran's Shield and a health potion over a damage start. The poke matchup is decided by how much of his damage stays on your health bar, not by how much of yours stays on his.

Look for the Acceleration Gate rather than the Shock Blast. The gate goes down first, and once you know where it's you know where not to stand.

Call your jungler at level 3 rather than waiting for a losing level 6. Jayce with no escape and no way to survive a two-person collapse is the same Jayce who was untouchable a second earlier.

Best Jayce Counters

Three answers to a poke lane: turn the poke into a weapon, arrive before it lands, or simply refuse to be poked out.

Sett champion icon

Sett Turns Poke Into Damage

Haymaker [W] stores a percentage of the damage Sett takes as Grit and then converts it into a shield plus true damage in the center of a punch. Every Shock Blast Jayce lands is literally loading the gun that's going to be pointed at him, which is the most direct possible answer to a poke lane.

Facebreaker [E] then pulls him in and stuns him, and The Show Stopper [R] picks him up and moves him somewhere he didn't want to be. Pit Grit [Passive]'s missing health regeneration also means the poke he does land partially heals itself back between waves, so it never accumulates the way he needs it to.

Irelia champion icon

Irelia Closes the Gap Instantly

Bladesurge [Q] dashes to a target and refreshes if that target dies or is Marked, which means Irelia's approach runs through the minion wave rather than across open ground. Jayce's poke is aimed at the open ground.

Defiant Dance [W] reduces incoming physical damage while she charges it, and Shock Blast is physical, so even the poke he does land on the way in is discounted. Flawless Duet [E] then stuns him, and a stunned Jayce with Thundering Blow already used has nothing left at all.

Dr. Mundo champion icon

Dr. Mundo Refuses to Leave Lane

Mundo's whole design is refusing to accept that poke damage is permanent. His passive gives significantly increased health regeneration on top of a resist to the first immobilizing effect, and Maximum Dosage [R] instantly restores a percentage of missing health and then keeps regenerating for a long duration afterward.

Infected Bonesaw [Q] also reaches 975 units and scales with the target's current health, so he isn't silent in the poke exchange either. Jayce's plan requires the damage to add up over ten minutes, and against Mundo it resets every time he walks behind his own tower.

Itemizing Against Jayce

Jayce deals physical damage with a magic knockback attached, and the damage arrives as repeated poke rather than one burst:

Plated Steelcaps Warmog's Armor Randuin's Omen Death's Dance

Warmog's Armor is the specific answer to a poke lane, because health that comes back on its own is the thing his entire plan depends on you not having. Plated Steelcaps and Randuin's Omen both cut the physical damage he does land, and Death's Dance spreads the Mercury Cannon burst over enough seconds that a follow-up all-in stops being lethal.
